- [00:00:00.000](light, pleasant music) (electronic chimes beeping)
- [00:00:07.230]In the Nimbus Lab, we primarily work
- [00:00:08.960]with these aerial robots
- [00:00:10.810]and we focus on two aspects,
- [00:00:13.800]so looking at the robotics problems,
- [00:00:16.980]so how do you get robots out into the real world,
- [00:00:20.010]and we also look at the software engineering side,
- [00:00:22.560]which is how do you develop software for these robots
- [00:00:25.570]that's robust and reliable.
- [00:00:40.480]You can actually carry this with you easily.
- [00:00:42.830]You can just drive up to the side of a lake or river
- [00:00:45.840]and send it out to collect samples for you.
- [00:00:48.480]This also greatly speeds up the sampling process,
- [00:00:50.900]so instead of just going out
- [00:00:52.050]and collecting one or two samples in the lake,
- [00:00:54.500]in that same time we can collect dozens of samples.
- [00:01:17.160]So with this type of vehicle,
- [00:01:18.780]we can basically now enable new types
- [00:01:22.290]of controlled burns
- [00:01:24.150]where before they may not have done it how they wanted to,
- [00:01:26.590]they did it how they could do it safely.
- [00:01:28.460]With this type of vehicle, you can get out
- [00:01:30.670]into the environment to start these controlled burns
- [00:01:34.890]much safer without putting any humans at risk.
- [00:01:38.260](fire sizzling)
- [00:01:40.520]It's fun to actually, you know, see a design
- [00:01:42.910]go from concept to the computer
- [00:01:45.190]to then actually being built in real life
- [00:01:46.640]and now doing a physical test
- [00:01:48.380]and seeing it validated, that's a lot of fun.
- [00:02:04.140]The balls will be loaded in this.
- [00:02:06.860]There's basically a chute up here,
- [00:02:08.360]and then they drop into the mechanism
- [00:02:10.440]so we'll have that fully loaded out there.
- [00:02:12.980]So this is good for this because we can ensure
- [00:02:15.290]that it's safely away from the vehicle
- [00:02:17.140]before it ignites. (engine buzzing)
- [00:02:26.820]We can reduce woody invasion in Nebraska
- [00:02:30.260]and elsewhere in the world
- [00:02:32.360]and we can reduce danger of wildfire.
- [00:02:36.290]Over the past 11 years,
- [00:02:38.080]there's been five different individuals
- [00:02:41.290]lose their lives in the wildland fire community.
- [00:02:44.940]So to have an unmanned aircraft system do the work for us--
- [00:02:49.395]Move those back. To take the firefighters
- [00:02:51.010]out of harm's way would be a significant thing.
- [00:03:02.070]We really were looking how we can give personality
- [00:03:05.200]to this thing, this inanimate object,
- [00:03:07.660]not just that they are these cool things that fly around
- [00:03:10.200]but they have these personalities that you can,
- [00:03:12.550]you just gotta tease them out.
- [00:03:14.430]We communicate mainly through movement,
- [00:03:17.160]and we're gonna be asking you to communicate
- [00:03:19.580]with your robots through movement.
- [00:03:26.730]I believe our adviser purposely told us
- [00:03:29.180]that we were not gonna be dancing
- [00:03:30.940]just to get us here and we found out later
- [00:03:33.340]that we were gonna be dancing,
- [00:03:34.960]but it was, it was a lot of fun.
- [00:03:43.941]So I think it's a real great opportunity for students
- [00:03:46.990]because these types of platforms,
- [00:03:48.670]it's very hands on, so you get to take
- [00:03:50.880]what you learn in a classroom and apply it to a system
- [00:03:54.090]and I really think that we have the potential
- [00:03:56.550]to become one of the, you know, premier UAV research labs.
