- [00:00:00.000]And welcome back to the soon to be
- [00:00:01.732]jam-packed Devaney Center, consecutive sellout 245
- [00:00:06.997]for Nebraska volleyball regular season.
- [00:00:09.949]Huskers getting ready to play the Spartans
- [00:00:11.781]of Michigan State, the Big Red has won ten in a row.
- [00:00:15.234]I'm John Baylor, soon to be joined by former All-American
- [00:00:18.193]Husker volleyball center Lauren Cook.
- [00:00:19.969]Got a special guest though, pre-match, for this one.
- [00:00:22.858]He's been the chancellor since April of 2016.
- [00:00:27.342]He was formerly the Senior Vice-Chancellor
- [00:00:29.244]of Academic Affairs, grew up in Southwest Virginia,
- [00:00:32.579]married a native Nebraskan, we got him now.
- [00:00:34.818]Chancellor, Ronnie Green how are you?
- [00:00:36.336]It's great to be here, John.
- [00:00:37.473]Good to see you.
- [00:00:38.423]You're a huge volleyball fan.
- [00:00:39.494]We see you at a lot of matches.
- [00:00:41.535]I don't know if I'm quite as big a fan
- [00:00:43.403]as my wife is, she's a super fan of every sport,
- [00:00:46.863]and volleyball is certainly one of her favorites.
- [00:00:49.031]But I get here every opportunity I can.
- [00:00:51.139]I was here Friday night, great to be back this afternoon.
- [00:00:53.488]Every time I see Jane, your wife, she wants to
- [00:00:55.476]know more about Nebraska volleyball.
- [00:00:56.811]Is this arguably her favorite team,
- [00:00:58.843]or she's got a lot of favorites?
- [00:01:00.310]She's got a lot of favorite teams.
- [00:01:01.637]She certainly is a favorite.
- [00:01:03.219]I kid with the volleyball players, because Mikaela Foecke,
- [00:01:07.701]when she was a freshman, I'm an animal scientist,
- [00:01:10.316]so when I saw those words animal science on her's,
- [00:01:13.117]Mikaela and I've been buds ever since.
- [00:01:14.663]That's great.
- [00:01:15.496]Meanwhile, you just got back from Michigan.
- [00:01:17.997]Tell us about your trip to Michigan yesterday.
- [00:01:21.321]Yeah, so we had a good trip to Michigan.
- [00:01:24.413]A very, very good place to go to a football game,
- [00:01:27.064]and to be at the big house there in Michigan.
- [00:01:28.975]I tell folks I've been on the campus several times
- [00:01:31.650]there at Ann Arbor, but I hadn't been
- [00:01:33.296]to a football game in Ann Arbor before.
- [00:01:35.233]So, it is an experience, certainly,
- [00:01:37.538]with 111,000 people in the big house.
- [00:01:41.277]And the day didn't go like we would have all liked
- [00:01:43.826]for it to have gone, but we had a wonderful trip,
- [00:01:46.812]and a lot of our alums of the Husker nation
- [00:01:49.328]really turned out yesterday.
- [00:01:50.996]Meanwhile, while you were away,
- [00:01:52.086]a lot was going on here in Lincoln on campus,
- [00:01:55.201]a big one for students and families.
- [00:01:57.526]Tell us about family weekend for the undergrads here at UNL.
- [00:02:01.389]Yeah, so we have a tradition here on campus
- [00:02:03.684]that's organized by our UNL parents association
- [00:02:06.685]and by our Student Affairs group on campus,
- [00:02:09.134]where it gives families a chance,
- [00:02:11.247]especially of the new freshman coming in,
- [00:02:14.350]to spend a weekend on campus,
- [00:02:16.277]get familiar with how things play here,
- [00:02:18.944]get a little more of that inter-dependence of our students
- [00:02:23.146]as they kind of move away and come to a place like Nebraska.
- [00:02:27.292]Get to show their families around campus,
- [00:02:29.254]demonstrate how they are in fact becoming more independent.
- [00:02:33.452]And they get to hear from professors,
- [00:02:35.537]they get to be involved in things on campus,
- [00:02:37.625]so it's a great weekend here for them
- [00:02:39.866]to reconnect as a family and to get a chance
- [00:02:42.389]to see a little bit more of the campus in action.
- [00:02:44.851]You yourself have played the parental role,
- [00:02:47.609]and it's gotta have mixed feelings,
- [00:02:49.562]all four of your kids went to UNL.
- [00:02:51.242]Yeah, we're kind of in that just
- [00:02:53.420]about empty nest entirely syndrome.
- [00:02:55.835]We are very blessed to have four children.
- [00:02:59.509]All four of them have been students here.
- [00:03:01.880]Three of them graduates already,
- [00:03:03.872]and our fourth is in her senior year
- [00:03:05.663]here at the University currently.
- [00:03:07.829]So yeah, we can relate to that.
- [00:03:10.314]So great parents weekend and families weekend
- [00:03:13.190]that we're just finishing up.
- [00:03:14.530]Chancellor Ronnie Green,
- [00:03:15.483]of course, we're all a little biased,
- [00:03:16.722]but how well did UNL prepare
- [00:03:18.345]your four children for adulthood?
- [00:03:20.824]Oh, absolutely wonderfully.
- [00:03:24.200]We've got a son who's a political journalist in DC,
- [00:03:27.160]that's a history and political science grad
- [00:03:29.738]from the University here, leading a news division
- [00:03:31.844]of a major media outlet in DC.
- [00:03:35.203]We've got a son who's a lawyer here in Lincoln
- [00:03:37.234]with a business degree and a law degree now,
- [00:03:39.514]and he's doing wonderful things in Lincoln.
- [00:03:41.631]A daughter who's in seminary at Princeton
- [00:03:43.543]who did her undergrad degree in journalism
- [00:03:46.180]and mass communications here on campus.
- [00:03:49.466]So this university does a phenomenal job
- [00:03:52.175]of preparing people to be citizens, to succeed in the world
- [00:03:56.869]in whatever profession they intend to go into,
- [00:04:00.015]and we're very proud of the fact
- [00:04:01.639]that those four Green children have all those UNL degrees.
- [00:04:05.511]That's Chancellor Robbie Green.
- [00:04:06.771]Okay, this coming week's another big one at the university,
- [00:04:10.090]homecoming week, that means front lawns of Greek houses
- [00:04:14.255]certainly have a lot of activity.
- [00:04:16.260]Yeah, well, Homecoming is a special thing.
- [00:04:19.040]You know high schools are going through homecoming.
- [00:04:21.457]I know we've got--
- [00:04:22.443]Sure, a lot of pressure
- [00:04:23.420]Here in Lincoln, last night
- [00:04:24.970]there was some homecomings, you know,
- [00:04:26.889]so a big week for the university.
- [00:04:29.041]We have over 200,000 living alumni
- [00:04:31.554]of this great university currently.
- [00:04:34.262]And getting a chance to connect back to the university
- [00:04:37.495]during football season as we work
- [00:04:39.692]toward homecoming game on Saturday.
- [00:04:42.000]All the various events that will happen
- [00:04:43.880]on campus actually kicked off today,
- [00:04:46.781]and it will culminate, of course, with the game
- [00:04:48.940]coming up in Memorial Stadium on Saturday.
- [00:04:52.250]A 5k run today, walk along the trail
- [00:04:55.449]beside the campus tomorrow, Huskers have talent
- [00:04:58.621]contests in the Colosseum.
- [00:05:00.412]That's always a highlight of the week,
- [00:05:02.170]a competition between groups on campus.
- [00:05:05.298]Thursday, a homecoming concert
- [00:05:06.764]that's become quite a tradition
- [00:05:08.359]out on east campus on the mall.
- [00:05:10.463]That evening, Friday, football Friday of course,
- [00:05:12.836]the Alumni Association does every week at the Wick Center.
- [00:05:15.371]A parade that evening at six o'clock
- [00:05:17.821]down 16th and Vine, and along 16th, on R.
- [00:05:21.637]A pep rally on the Union Plaza.
- [00:05:24.011]Get lots of sleep. (laughs)
- [00:05:25.244]All the kinds of things you know.
- [00:05:26.818]Those displays in front of the Greek houses,
- [00:05:30.049]of course, are a big part of the tradition here
- [00:05:32.502]that they'll be awarded at the game next Saturday,
- [00:05:35.190]along with the Homecoming court
- [00:05:36.303]and the recognition of our new Homecoming king and queen.
- [00:05:39.052]Chancellor, we don't get the chance
- [00:05:40.202]to talk to you live very often, so let me just ask you.
- [00:05:43.214]Besides the winning and the legacy
- [00:05:45.137]and the historical success for Nebraska volleyball,
- [00:05:47.269]when the leadership of the university
- [00:05:49.109]thinks about this program, what values jump to mind?
- [00:05:53.378]Oh wow. Well, you know,
- [00:05:56.488]we just have launched a new brand platform
- [00:05:59.044]that you've probably heard a little about.
- [00:06:00.807]In fact, I just saw it playing on the big screen
- [00:06:02.494]here, when we walked in today.
- [00:06:04.242]Inner grit, inner glory.
- [00:06:06.960]Talks to the strength of Nebraska and the institution,
- [00:06:10.219]and it gives our volleyball team, historically, certainly,
- [00:06:13.102]this team of individuals,
- [00:06:16.645]the opportunity to watch today.
- [00:06:19.879]The work ethic, the team spirit,
- [00:06:23.187]the ability to work together,
- [00:06:25.484]while at the same time still being amongst
- [00:06:27.965]the very best students in the university.
- [00:06:32.452]You just have to admire that a great deal.
- [00:06:36.620]Work ethic, principles, values,
- [00:06:41.742]the ability for them to work together.
- [00:06:43.608]It's always just an amazing thing for me.
- [00:06:45.406]I wasn't an athlete myself, but I sit and I watch this.
- [00:06:48.691]And I say, "Wow, how can they possibly do that."
- [00:06:52.042]True student athletes.
- [00:06:53.581]That's absolutely right.
- [00:06:54.663]We've got some of the very best in the world
- [00:06:56.101]here at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:06:57.336]Chancellor Ronnie Green, it's so great to see you.
- [00:06:58.622]Good to see you, John. Thank you.
