- [00:00:21.900]I chair the department of civil engineering
- [00:00:23.300]at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln
- [00:00:25.021]and I'm a professor of structural engineering
- [00:00:27.450]in the department.
- [00:00:28.283]My research focus is on transportation infrastructures,
- [00:00:31.500]specifically bridges and how to make the infrastructure
- [00:00:34.420]last longer and be as safe as possible.
- [00:00:39.870]So when the University imploded Cather and Pound,
- [00:00:42.430]we were able to gather data from the buildings,
- [00:00:44.750]from adjacent sides while the implosions were happening.
- [00:00:47.730]And that data set is extremely unique.
- [00:00:50.960]Not only within Nebraska but across the country
- [00:00:53.640]and around the world.
- [00:00:54.780]And the information that we've developed
- [00:00:56.540]and will provide is going to be used
- [00:00:59.410]by many people to make the world a better place to live.

- [00:01:04.880]Being a part of the Big 10 is a huge reason why
- [00:01:07.560]I chose to come to Nebraska.
- [00:01:09.190]It's a huge reason why we're attracting such amazing
- [00:01:12.490]young women and men to be faculty here
- [00:01:14.900]and why we're attracting such amazing students
- [00:01:17.220]from all over the world to be a part of this
- [00:01:19.760]great experience that is University of Nebraska Lincoln.

- [00:01:33.480]My job is Associate Registrar of the
- [00:01:36.220]Sheldon Museum of Art.
- [00:01:38.050]So that means I'm responsible for maintaining
- [00:01:41.250]the database, making sure all the works of art
- [00:01:43.920]are where they should be.
- [00:01:45.060]Nebraska weather takes its toll on
- [00:01:47.790]outdoor painted works and we just recently had
- [00:01:51.220]Torn Notebook repainted, which is great,
- [00:01:53.250]because it's such a landmark, not just for the University,
- [00:01:56.700]but for the city and so now it's bright and fresh,
- [00:01:59.470]it means the metal has been protected
- [00:02:01.420]and it looks great for at least another 10 years
- [00:02:03.990]and then we'll paint it again.
- [00:02:05.390]I think what really has kept me here
- [00:02:07.580]is the fact that I'm working with such
- [00:02:08.990]a great group of people.
- [00:02:10.650]People who are smart and dedicated
- [00:02:12.541]and just, it's fun to be part of the team
- [00:02:14.979]that we are here at the Sheldon.

- [00:02:26.710]So I am the professor of communication studies
- [00:02:29.930]and a Willa Cather professor.
- [00:02:31.780]And that I am the chair of the department.
- [00:02:34.540]When I came to interview here, I wasn't really sure,
- [00:02:37.570]I didn't know anything about Nebraska.
- [00:02:39.100]I almost had to look it up on the map.
- [00:02:40.870]And I came here and what I found was
- [00:02:42.700]a really special place.
- [00:02:44.020]Everybody I met really cared about students,
- [00:02:46.470]cared about teaching, cared about research
- [00:02:49.050]and to me, all of those parts of my career
- [00:02:51.160]have been a big package.
- [00:02:53.100]I think the biggest change for me has been
- [00:02:54.880]when we went to the Big 10.
- [00:02:56.780]It was a surprise and I have a Big 10 PhD
- [00:02:59.103]out of Minnesota, so I knew what that meant.
- [00:03:02.350]And for me, it set the place on fire as a researcher.
- [00:03:07.450]Expectations rose and excitement about the
- [00:03:10.959]scholarly mission of the University rose at the same time
- [00:03:13.890]and so, more resources and more oomph
- [00:03:17.380]was put into the research mission
- [00:03:18.950]and to me, that was really important.

- [00:03:28.520]My job is working in the Student Involvement office
- [00:03:31.310]and working with students on East Campus
- [00:03:34.640]to provide programs and services
- [00:03:36.470]for our student organizations.
- [00:03:38.360]I love working with students, I love planning events
- [00:03:41.530]and seeing them succeed, build relationships,
- [00:03:44.054]develop skills that will go way beyond
- [00:03:47.700]their time at the University.
- [00:03:49.810]The Culture Center that was located on our street,
- [00:03:53.820]I actually was a student here when the University
- [00:03:56.500]purchased that facility and was also able to
- [00:04:00.240]manage that facility for 10 years.
- [00:04:02.940]And so now it's gone and that glass is actually
- [00:04:07.200]a stained glass that was taken from the window
- [00:04:10.090]that the staff saved and gave to me.
- [00:04:12.820]So it means a lot.
- [00:04:14.630]A student came to me with a vision of
- [00:04:17.110]bringing Larry the Cable Guy to campus
- [00:04:19.330]for a benefit for the Team Jack foundation.
- [00:04:23.130]And we made that event happen and over $200,000 was raised.
- [00:04:28.770]So that was probably one of the most notable,
- [00:04:31.730]significant accomplishments I think that I've had.

- [00:04:44.650]When I first started here, our students were
- [00:04:48.215]more active in doing things.
- [00:04:51.700]Snowball fights, streaking, the year we had
- [00:04:55.040]the Super Regional here with Texas,
- [00:04:57.781]we had a streaker cross the baseball field
- [00:05:00.230]with 8000 fans watching.
- [00:05:02.500]Somebody popped out of the stands
- [00:05:04.240]and now he is leaping on to the berm...
- [00:05:06.990]Over the years it's mellowed out quite a bit,
- [00:05:09.290]students aren't quite active in those kinds of activities.

- [00:05:19.080]I enjoy talking to people, meeting with them
- [00:05:24.150]and making sure that their events go right.

- [00:05:40.900]My job at Nebraska has been as a professor of
- [00:05:43.820]educational phycology.
- [00:05:45.330]I've been interested forever, in how to improve teaching
- [00:05:48.629]and learning.
- [00:05:50.280]When I started to the University, which I did
- [00:05:52.520]as a 17 year old, way back when,
- [00:05:55.350]I think there were 8000 students.
- [00:05:57.770]I think it was my fiftieth birthday,
- [00:06:00.482]my students decided, hey we have to celebrate that.
- [00:06:03.450]So they keep bringing in a cake with 50 candles on it.
- [00:06:06.530]That was so many candles that it set off the fire alarm.

- [00:06:10.830]Now I don't know what the heck it would do.
- [00:06:13.380]Probably would, call out the fire department
- [00:06:15.610]and everything else.
- [00:06:16.690]It's just the great people, the staff, the faculty,
- [00:06:19.510]the students; they come from everywhere,
- [00:06:22.550]every part of the world, every part of Nebraska,
- [00:06:25.140]that's a great thing.
- [00:06:26.460]I run across former students all the time
- [00:06:29.470]in all kinds of places, so that's a great feeling.

- [00:06:40.980]Five years, what a ride, I can't wait
- [00:06:42.570]for the next five, 10, 15, 20, 50.
- [00:06:46.610]Its been 10 years, which seems like the blink of an eye.
- [00:06:49.774]When I came to Nebraska 20 years ago,
- [00:06:51.709]I'd never dreamed I'd live in Nebraska
- [00:06:54.720]longer than anywhere else I've stayed in my life,
- [00:06:57.040]and I am delighted to make my home here.
- [00:07:00.291]Wouldn't trade my 30 years of service
- [00:07:02.846]to be anywhere else in the country
- [00:07:05.790]and I think that there are very promising days ahead.
