- [00:00:04.600]Welcome back.
- [00:00:05.433]Yet another kickoff here on the Husker Sports Network.
- [00:00:07.080]Nebraska's set to take on the Troy Trojans.
- [00:00:09.280]11:01 kickoff today.
- [00:00:10.930]We are joined as we are each and every week
- [00:00:12.600]by University of Nebraska-Lincoln chancellor, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:15.340]Last week was, I don't know how to take it, chancellor.
- [00:00:18.880]I was excited to see the Huskers play.
- [00:00:21.060]Liked a lot of what I saw, but then the end,
- [00:00:22.840]it was, well, disappointing.
- [00:00:24.305]You know, Greg, it was a great game.
- [00:00:26.339]It really was, and it was great
- [00:00:29.460]to see our football team get
- [00:00:32.070]to play, right? (host laughs)
- [00:00:33.870]After kind of the start we had the week before
- [00:00:36.723]and get to that first real play of the game was exciting,
- [00:00:40.465]and it was great to see the effort that they put forward,
- [00:00:43.650]and the turnaround that we feel is underway.
- [00:00:46.039]It was a great game.
- [00:00:47.880]Disappointing loss in the end.
- [00:00:50.210]Glad to see that our quarterback is
- [00:00:51.992]on recovery, and so looking forward to this week.
- [00:00:55.826]Alright.
- [00:00:56.920]Well, I know you're extremely busy,
- [00:00:58.310]but you are a big sports fan,
- [00:01:00.150]and you like to get out and support
- [00:01:01.766]as many of the sports teams as you can.
- [00:01:05.440]You do try to keep an eye on our sports.
- [00:01:07.337]Yeah, we do.
- [00:01:08.220]We try to get out to as many of the events as we can.
- [00:01:11.094]My wife, Jane's better at it
- [00:01:13.510]than I am. (host laughs)
- [00:01:14.343]She's a fixture at most Husker athletics events,
- [00:01:17.040]as you know, but this fall, we not only have
- [00:01:20.030]football that we're excited about today,
- [00:01:21.962]but our women's volleyball team is off to a great start,
- [00:01:24.775]had a big week this past week,
- [00:01:26.609]our soccer team is doing really well,
- [00:01:29.510]also had a big week with a big game
- [00:01:31.190]in North Carolina over the weekend,
- [00:01:33.159]our cross country team is active,
- [00:01:35.070]and then we get into swimming and diving
- [00:01:37.360]and all kinds of other sports.
- [00:01:38.404]So we like to get out and support across
- [00:01:40.860]all of the Husker athletics, and we're really proud
- [00:01:43.982]of all of our student athletes.
- [00:01:45.976]We have well over 600 student athletes here
- [00:01:49.410]at Nebraska that are amongst some
- [00:01:51.370]of our very best students, and I want
- [00:01:53.410]to particularly today give a shout-out
- [00:01:55.046]to Erika Freyhof, who was just named
- [00:01:57.495]the Big Ten Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week
- [00:02:00.540]this past week.
- [00:02:02.140]Erika is a sophomore with us, and she joined us
- [00:02:05.620]on the cross country team last year as a freshman,
- [00:02:10.280]but she also has two siblings here,
- [00:02:11.875]who are members of the track and field team,
- [00:02:15.150]her brother, Mark, and her sister, Audrey,
- [00:02:17.610]all coming to Nebraska from the state of Michigan,
- [00:02:20.210]one of our Big Ten peer states.
- [00:02:22.264]Excited to count all three Freyhofs here
- [00:02:24.630]as Huskers in our Husker athletics.
- [00:02:27.200]That's fantastic, and I know
- [00:02:28.290]the student athletes really appreciate
- [00:02:29.700]when they do see you at their events.
- [00:02:31.790]You mentioned cross country.
- [00:02:32.691]They certainly have to race on different kinds of terrain,
- [00:02:36.772]different kinds of weather that can impact their events.
- [00:02:40.970]Husker Nation probably has talked more
- [00:02:42.380]about the weather this September
- [00:02:43.530]because of the washout we had
- [00:02:45.482]on September the 1st than maybe any time I can remember.
- [00:02:48.413]We have a special guest with us here today,
- [00:02:50.800]associate professor of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences,
- [00:02:52.805]Adam Houston, and, Adam, great to have you here with us.
- [00:02:55.940]Let's talk about the university and its research
- [00:02:59.314]kind of leading the way on researching storms.
- [00:03:02.163]Tell us a little bit about that.
- [00:03:03.381]Yeah, so we just recently had a project funded,
- [00:03:06.397]NSF-funded project to study the storms called supercells,
- [00:03:10.912]the very intense storms that are the parent storms
- [00:03:14.580]for most of the very significant, intense tornadoes,
- [00:03:17.026]and there's some gaps in our understanding,
- [00:03:20.287]and we hope that by filling some of these gaps,
- [00:03:22.130]we're gonna ultimately improve forecasting.
- [00:03:23.623]Which, that's the goal, right?
- [00:03:25.480]To help people get advance notice
- [00:03:26.839]and make sure everybody's safe.
- [00:03:28.387]Right, yeah, and the National Weather Service does
- [00:03:31.290]a really good job of forecasting, say, six to 12 hours
- [00:03:35.908]ahead of time, so the tornado watch, for example.
- [00:03:38.150]Most tornado watches are pretty accurate.
- [00:03:40.490]That is, a tornado watch is issued and tornadoes occur.
- [00:03:43.608]Unfortunately, when you get to the warning scale,
- [00:03:46.778]we'll call that a warning is when the conditions are
- [00:03:50.074]not only supportive, but there's a storm
- [00:03:52.560]that's active and potential to produce a tornado is high.
- [00:03:54.845]The false alarm rate is really high,
- [00:03:57.368]so, a lot of warnings are issued
- [00:03:59.401]and no tornado occurs, which,
- [00:04:01.500]it's great that no tornado occurs,
- [00:04:02.850]but when you issue a warning and no tornado happens,
- [00:04:05.307]it tends to desensitize people.
- [00:04:07.177]People don't tend to react as they should,
- [00:04:10.038]and unfortunately, if you try to bring down
- [00:04:12.990]that false alarm rate, then the probability
- [00:04:14.917]of detection goes down as well.
- [00:04:17.150]That is, you get more tornadoes that occur without warnings,
- [00:04:19.940]and so that trade-off is just a fundamental limitation
- [00:04:21.835]of our ability to predict at those timescales,
- [00:04:23.952]and what we hope is that by improving understanding,
- [00:04:26.144]we can start to increase those numbers,
- [00:04:29.400]increase the probability of detection, that is,
- [00:04:31.760]and decrease the false alarm rate.
- [00:04:33.810]Now, is Nebraska by themselves doing this research,
- [00:04:35.952]or is there other institutions that are helping with this?
- [00:04:39.088]Right, yeah, this is not something that we can do alone.
- [00:04:41.526]It is highly collaborative.
- [00:04:43.479]We have four different universities
- [00:04:45.753]that are involved, University of Colorado,
- [00:04:47.215]Texas Tech University, University of Oklahoma,
- [00:04:49.810]along with the National Severe Storms Lab,
- [00:04:51.630]which is a NOAA agency, or a NOAA-funded
- [00:04:55.660]lab that studies severe storms.
- [00:04:57.810]Talk about technology and how much
- [00:04:59.610]that has, the advancement we've had
- [00:05:01.770]in that over the last decade-plus.
- [00:05:03.500]Yeah, that's one of the interesting things
- [00:05:06.010]about this project.
- [00:05:06.843]Obviously there's interest in the types
- [00:05:08.760]of storms that we're sampling,
- [00:05:09.820]but really we're bringing to bear a technology
- [00:05:12.066]that is perfectly suited for the kinds
- [00:05:15.000]of questions that we wanna answer.
- [00:05:16.280]It's namely the unmanned aircraft, the drone.
- [00:05:20.870]The reason it's well suited is
- [00:05:22.700]that we can get observations above the ground,
- [00:05:24.659]and if you think about it, most of the observations
- [00:05:26.603]that we collect are at the ground.
- [00:05:28.180]So we have surface stations that are at the ground.
- [00:05:30.858]You have balloons that can be released,
- [00:05:33.671]and they have observation, the little sensor package
- [00:05:36.560]on 'em that can collect data,
- [00:05:37.590]but you have no control over it.
- [00:05:38.660]It goes straight up and then to the stratosphere,
- [00:05:40.669]but with unmanned aircraft, you have complete control,
- [00:05:43.482]and so we can collect these observations
- [00:05:46.209]that you can't collect in any other way,
- [00:05:49.080]and so with these observations,
- [00:05:51.390]we have a unique insight into some of the structures
- [00:05:53.370]that we think are important
- [00:05:54.410]in these supercell thunderstorms,
- [00:05:56.890]these structures we think could lead
- [00:05:59.730]to tornadogenesis, and if we can demonstrate that,
- [00:06:01.726]and also associate those structures to things
- [00:06:04.830]that we can see with the little more crude instrumentation,
- [00:06:08.723]then we start to really bridge that predictive gap.
- [00:06:12.900]Adam mentioned, chancellor, the other institutions
- [00:06:16.130]that are collaborating on this,
- [00:06:17.644]even some former Big 12 conference members.
- [00:06:20.740]How unusual or is it usual that schools work together
- [00:06:24.140]in areas like this?
- [00:06:25.009]No, we have lots of partnerships
- [00:06:27.900]between universities all over the country
- [00:06:30.831]and all over the world, for that matter.
- [00:06:32.900]We certainly have a lot of partnerships
- [00:06:35.585]in the former Big 12 conferences,
- [00:06:37.949]our former membership there,
- [00:06:39.530]as well as our Big Ten colleagues.
- [00:06:42.649]I'll give you a couple of examples.
- [00:06:44.850]In addition to the work that Adam was just talking about
- [00:06:47.333]in severe weather, we just announced recently
- [00:06:50.677]a major consortium working on antimicrobial resistance
- [00:06:54.989]that involves the University of Iowa,
- [00:06:57.112]the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:06:59.354]Iowa State University, all as partners working together
- [00:07:03.114]with UNMC, with our med center here at Nebraska as well,
- [00:07:07.860]working in that important area.
- [00:07:09.190]We have work in math education,
- [00:07:11.533]spanning a number of the Big 12 institutions.
- [00:07:14.557]So we just hosted a conference here recently
- [00:07:17.720]with about 100 scientists from around the country
- [00:07:21.380]in laser research and laser laboratories
- [00:07:24.720]that are sharing their resources
- [00:07:27.008]across institutions involving work in physics.
- [00:07:31.060]So you could go on and on with these kinds
- [00:07:33.270]of relationships where we're changing the world every day
- [00:07:35.383]through research working together across universities,
- [00:07:40.460]including, of course, Nebraska.
- [00:07:42.540]Very good.
- [00:07:43.373]Adam Houston, great, thank you very much for chatting
- [00:07:45.950]with us here today and continued success to you.
- [00:07:47.480]Thank you.
- [00:07:48.600]Chancellor, always great to see you.
- [00:07:49.433]Great to see you.
- [00:07:50.266]Go Big Red.
- [00:07:51.099]Alright, we got more can out of kickoff comin' up next.
- [00:07:53.350]Matt Coatney will check out the Big Ten Blitz.
- [00:07:54.987]That's next.
