- [00:00:04.600]Hi, my name is Ashlynn.
- [00:00:06.492]And my name is Will.
- [00:00:07.325]And we work for the Nebraska Industrial Assessment Center.
- [00:00:09.640]Today, we will be discussing ways to reduce
- [00:00:11.840]the amount of solid waste being sent to
- [00:00:13.410]the landfill at your facility.
- [00:00:15.410]There are many benefits to reducing the amount
- [00:00:16.870]of solid waste going to landfill at you facility.
- [00:00:19.180]First, it often saves money.
- [00:00:20.720]Sending solid waste to landfill can be very expensive
- [00:00:22.900]and other options of clearing solid waste
- [00:00:24.570]from your facility can be much cheaper.
- [00:00:26.420]Second, you begin the process toward becoming
- [00:00:28.520]a zero waste to landfill facility.
- [00:00:30.610]You can use this as a marketing tool
- [00:00:32.230]to help sell your products and increase employee morale.
- [00:00:34.690]The key to reducing your solid waste production
- [00:00:36.860]is developing an overall waste management plan.
- [00:00:39.690]The first step of which is to catalog the type
- [00:00:42.010]and amount of different waste products.
- [00:00:43.800]Once you know the amount and type of waste
- [00:00:45.400]produced at your facility, the next step is to
- [00:00:47.350]consulting with a waste vendor to ascertain
- [00:00:49.450]which waste can be combined and which waste
- [00:00:51.530]need to be separated.
- [00:00:52.630]Some waste, if separated, can be re-used or recycled.
- [00:00:55.410]Separating waste, such as plastic or cardboard,
- [00:00:57.970]can result in significant rebates from companies
- [00:01:00.480]who want that material.
- [00:01:01.530]Finding out which ways your facility can get a
- [00:01:03.600]rebate on, is crucial, as other sustainable waste
- [00:01:06.370]initiatives may result in a higher cost.
- [00:01:08.780]Getting rebates can help balance those costs out.
- [00:01:11.220]After a separation strategy is developed,
- [00:01:13.440]the next step is to train employees
- [00:01:14.980]and implement the strategy.
- [00:01:16.290]For instance, when taking off personal protective
- [00:01:18.650]equipment, it is important to place the rubber gloves
- [00:01:20.870]and plastic protective coverings in different containers.
- [00:01:23.380]One easy example you can begin to implement
- [00:01:25.270]at your facility today involves paper towels.
- [00:01:27.810]Each roll of paper towels contains four pounds of material.
- [00:01:30.920]Most facilities use the paper towels
- [00:01:32.880]and then simply throw it into the trash,
- [00:01:34.820]where it ends up in a landfill.
- [00:01:37.190]If your facility uses one roll of paper towels each day,
- [00:01:39.270]that's equivalent to 1500 pounds of solid waste
- [00:01:42.030]contributed to the landfill each year.
- [00:01:44.040]If you keep your paper towel waste stream separate,
- [00:01:46.410]you can often send it to a composting facility
- [00:01:48.840]for less cost than sending it to a landfill,
- [00:01:51.000]resulting in financial and environmental benefits.
- [00:01:53.520]Additionally, eclectic hand dryers can be installed,
- [00:01:56.030]often for a payback period of less than 1.5 years.
- [00:01:59.250]Hopefully, this video helped you learn
- [00:02:00.660]a little bit more about strategies to reduce
- [00:02:03.091]solid waste flows at your facility.
- [00:02:04.200]Start small, with easy, cost efficient projects
- [00:02:06.970]and you'll be reducing your solid waste
- [00:02:08.380]to landfill in no time.
- [00:02:09.740]If you have any questions,
- [00:02:11.698]the NIAC team would love to help you out.
