- [00:00:00.857](upbeat hip-hop music)
- [00:00:02.550]Welcome back Countdown to Kickoff.
- [00:00:04.060]Time for our weekly chat with the chancellor
- [00:00:05.960]of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:08.078]I thought Scott Frost put it the best over this week.
- [00:00:10.340]He said, "well, we got all dressed up last week
- [00:00:11.977]"and nowhere to go."
- [00:00:13.230]It was disappointing but man, what a,
- [00:00:15.400]you had to feel the energy.
- [00:00:16.878]Oh what an environment, right?
- [00:00:19.460]I think everybody felt it,
- [00:00:21.060]leading up to the day certainly,
- [00:00:23.543]over these last number of months.
- [00:00:26.300]And then when you were in that stadium you couldn't help
- [00:00:29.290]but feel the energy and the excitement
- [00:00:31.550]about the start of the season that you know,
- [00:00:33.912]will start this weekend.
- [00:00:36.050]We're looking forward to a,
- [00:00:37.240]it was a great day with mother nature playing a hand.
- [00:00:41.300]Today Colorado, long time rival of Nebraska.
- [00:00:43.350]You spent some time at CSU,
- [00:00:44.790]so I'm sure that was a rivalry for CSU too.
- [00:00:46.660]Yeah, a little bit.
- [00:00:49.750]Didn't do so well over in my alma mater last weekend
- [00:00:52.243]but, yeah absolutely.
- [00:00:54.570]And we actually lived in Colorado for 10 years
- [00:00:57.160]and got to attend all the Husker games
- [00:00:59.800]when they were out in Boulder so.
- [00:01:03.300]Well welcome to the Buffaloes.
- [00:01:04.833]That's right.
- [00:01:05.666]Well, the University of Nebraska chancellor's
- [00:01:07.330]had a long roster of athletic departments,
- [00:01:10.850]kind of the cutting edge of a lot of different things.
- [00:01:13.710]Seems like, even more so this year,
- [00:01:15.410]people are talking about Nebraska being
- [00:01:16.750]on the cutting edge of some fun things.
- [00:01:18.230]Do you get a sense of that?
- [00:01:19.590]Oh absolutely, you know,
- [00:01:20.530]big part of what we do is innovation.
- [00:01:22.360]It's what a university is all about.
- [00:01:25.290]And it's true for a athletic department as well
- [00:01:28.450]as what we do across the entire university.
- [00:01:31.330]Nebraska athletics, it's a critical part
- [00:01:34.100]of helping our student athletes be as competitive
- [00:01:36.610]as they can possibly be, whether that's
- [00:01:38.510]in terms of facilities, whether it's in infrastructure,
- [00:01:41.190]whether it's in the support that they receive.
- [00:01:44.210]Coaches and staff and their efforts are continually
- [00:01:46.606]innovating around our student athletes,
- [00:01:49.760]including with technology as well that we apply.
- [00:01:53.510]We're seeing a lot of renewed emphasis in that this year,
- [00:01:57.570]with the hiring of Dave Ellis
- [00:01:59.260]to run our Sports Nutrition Program
- [00:02:01.140]for our student athletes across all sports.
- [00:02:03.230]Very excited about him being added
- [00:02:04.986]to our team and to our staff.
- [00:02:07.511]Renewal in strength and conditioning,
- [00:02:10.410]and our efforts there that
- [00:02:11.776]we're already seeing the benefit from.
- [00:02:15.240]Even down to the way that
- [00:02:16.820]our football practices are being scheduled.
- [00:02:18.920]I know there's been a lot of talk about that.
- [00:02:21.040]Moving to morning practices that Coach Frost
- [00:02:23.860]and his team are working on so,
- [00:02:25.216]constantly kind of innovating,
- [00:02:27.370]looking for ways for improvement in athletics,
- [00:02:30.700]along with what we do in all of our research programs.
- [00:02:34.340]And areas like water and food security,
- [00:02:36.880]early childhood education and development,
- [00:02:39.910]better understanding things like in nanosciences
- [00:02:43.100]and application of research work.
- [00:02:45.570]It's innovating everything from medicine
- [00:02:47.990]down to modernization of life in general.
- [00:02:52.120]So absolutely innovation is about what we do.
- [00:02:55.420]Yeah people think of research when they think
- [00:02:57.330]of innovation, but Nebraska's been
- [00:02:59.040]pretty innovative in it's approach to
- [00:03:00.720]a new academic program and teaching
- [00:03:02.740]and preparing students for the future.
- [00:03:04.840]Can you give me a example of that?
- [00:03:06.610]Well, we were kind of innovators early on if you will.
- [00:03:11.920]We just are celebrating this weekend,
- [00:03:14.240]the 10th anniversary of the Raikes School
- [00:03:16.530]of Computer Science and Management.
- [00:03:18.620]A real gem of the University,
- [00:03:22.020]that innovates in that it is an education program,
- [00:03:26.570]cohort based, for very exceptional students,
- [00:03:30.530]that brings together business, the management side,
- [00:03:34.520]with computer science.
- [00:03:36.400]Very unique nationally in doing that.
- [00:03:39.410]It tracks very high achieving students
- [00:03:41.630]to the University of Nebraska from all over the country.
- [00:03:45.550]And they have a cohort based program
- [00:03:48.780]where there are 35 students roughly per class.
- [00:03:52.790]The Raikes School is very highly selective.
- [00:03:56.679]Just to give you some idea,
- [00:03:58.690]almost all of the Raikes school students
- [00:04:00.780]have either a 35 or 36 near perfect ACT score.
- [00:04:06.120]And things that we would see coming out of that effort
- [00:04:09.170]are like Hudl, that we're now well familiar with.
- [00:04:12.520]The very successful business that
- [00:04:15.150]three Raikes school graduates founded,
- [00:04:18.145]a number of years ago and has been so successful.
- [00:04:21.630]So big celebration, just Thursday night.
- [00:04:24.950]The 10th anniversary of the Raikes School.
- [00:04:27.930]A very innovative approach
- [00:04:29.870]in computer science and management.
- [00:04:31.840]Nebraska chancellor Ronnie Green
- [00:04:33.210]here on Countdown to Kickoff.
- [00:04:34.320]You mention the name Hudl, that's pretty well known.
- [00:04:36.490]What a great addition it's been to the community
- [00:04:38.840]of Lincoln and it's been such a great program
- [00:04:41.180]that was born out of the University.
- [00:04:42.690]What are some facts about the Raikes School
- [00:04:44.800]that maybe some Nebraskans are not familiar with?
- [00:04:47.530]Well, as I mentioned, you know
- [00:04:49.110]it's cohort based, so we have 35 to 40 students
- [00:04:52.300]per each of our four classes.
- [00:04:53.890]They actually live together in the Kauffman Center,
- [00:04:57.810]on campus, in that cohort kind of learning model.
- [00:05:03.723]A few key kind of success statistics.
- [00:05:06.630]The students who enter the Raikes program
- [00:05:09.380]have consistently been in the top 5% of their class.
- [00:05:13.251]We usually average about 10 national merit finalists
- [00:05:16.860]per class in the Raikes program.
- [00:05:19.490]Total of 362 graduates over those 10 years.
- [00:05:23.450]We're working coast to coast in the U.S.
- [00:05:26.470]As well as in Nebraska here,
- [00:05:28.350]as well as internationally around the world.
- [00:05:31.740]At the end of their program,
- [00:05:33.810]in their latter year of their program,
- [00:05:36.140]they work in what's called design studio,
- [00:05:38.370]where they work on contracted projects
- [00:05:41.312]that are brought to the Raikes School as designed elements
- [00:05:45.410]that they work together in groups and present.
- [00:05:48.656]242 of those have been developed over those 10 years
- [00:05:52.800]where real software applications are developed
- [00:05:56.140]out of those design projects.
- [00:05:57.710]More than 170 real world solutions have been developed
- [00:06:01.330]for 70 Nebraska based organizations.
- [00:06:04.020]We can't thank Jeff and Tricia Raikes enough.
- [00:06:07.406]The Raikes School, named after the Raikes family.
- [00:06:12.570]Jeff, a former executive of Microsoft,
- [00:06:15.290]and former CEO of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation,
- [00:06:19.240]with us today, for the game, and excited
- [00:06:22.380]to recognize the 10th anniversary of
- [00:06:24.570]this very successful element of the University.
- [00:06:27.370]Oh fantastic, always great to have them back
- [00:06:29.240]in Lincoln as well.
- [00:06:30.320]Well enjoy today, let's get this season underway with a win.
- [00:06:33.360]Absolutely, go big red.
- [00:06:35.920]Matt Cody, we'll be back with you,
- [00:06:37.113]with a big ten blitz that's coming up next.
