- [00:00:04.160]Welcome back, Countdown to Kickoff here
- [00:00:05.250]in the Husker Sports Network,
- [00:00:06.590]just a little over an hour away
- [00:00:08.220]from the beginning of the Husker's 2018 season
- [00:00:11.170]and the first season under new head coach Scott Frost.
- [00:00:14.320]We're delighted to be joined as we will
- [00:00:15.600]each and every week during Countdown to Kickoff
- [00:00:17.330]by the Chancellor at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
- [00:00:19.500]Ronnie Green, here we go.
- [00:00:21.440]These guys have put a lot of work and effort
- [00:00:23.480]into getting ready for this upcoming season.
- [00:00:25.696]The stadium's gonna be packed to the gills
- [00:00:27.650]as it always is again tonight.
- [00:00:29.232]Man, there's just a great energy
- [00:00:32.250]around Lincoln, around campus.
- [00:00:33.530]I'm sure you felt that all week.
- [00:00:35.098]Oh, we sure have.
- [00:00:36.427]There's no place to go to a football game
- [00:00:38.260]like Memorial Stadium and we all
- [00:00:39.935]understand that, we know that.
- [00:00:42.177]There's this extra buzz this year
- [00:00:44.050]associated with the start of this special season.
- [00:00:46.773]We have a beautiful vibrant campus that people come to
- [00:00:50.770]and then to be able to experience Husker Nation in that way
- [00:00:54.120]is just really, really special.
- [00:00:55.966]We hear all the time from fans who come here,
- [00:00:59.560]we know this is part of our tradition,
- [00:01:01.940]part of our legacy at Nebraska
- [00:01:04.010]about the Nebraska fans, the knowledge of those fans,
- [00:01:07.430]the courteous nature of those fans,
- [00:01:09.880]the niceness of Nebraska fans.
- [00:01:12.160]That's part of our game day experience, certainly.
- [00:01:14.799]I get to go to away games all through the year,
- [00:01:18.570]as you know, Greg, and get to visit
- [00:01:20.820]all of the other campuses and we can truly say that
- [00:01:23.850]there is no place to go to a football game like Nebraska.
- [00:01:26.500]That's just a fact.
- [00:01:29.205]And you think about this sell out streak that we have had,
- [00:01:32.395]the 362nd consecutive sell out,
- [00:01:36.870]dating all the way back to 1962.
- [00:01:38.980]I was born in 1961, so that was a long time
- [00:01:41.602]for us to have that record.
- [00:01:44.480]There's just no place like Nebraska on a game day.
- [00:01:47.692]And then we actually have a lot to herald ourselves to
- [00:01:53.310]about remarkable nature of our people here,
- [00:01:56.640]the remarkable nature of our university.
- [00:01:59.500]We talk about our university being the DNA
- [00:02:02.390]of the state of Nebraska and when you're talking about
- [00:02:05.460]our student athletes on the field,
- [00:02:07.380]our students in academic classes,
- [00:02:09.440]our researchers in the lab or in the field
- [00:02:11.960]or in the studio across our campus,
- [00:02:14.407]our extension educators working out
- [00:02:16.900]all across the 93 counties in the state of Nebraska.
- [00:02:20.400]We're all Huskers and we all are united in that work.
- [00:02:24.657]We all have the same grit.
- [00:02:26.850]We all have the same glory.
- [00:02:28.954]And when we achieve that kind of glory,
- [00:02:31.140]it's really with our entire state
- [00:02:32.625]that we feel so specially here on game day.
- [00:02:35.840]One thing, Chancellor, that I hear
- [00:02:37.222]from Nebraskans about you is that they love the fact
- [00:02:41.250]that you get out and you come visit them around the state
- [00:02:44.100]and you go hear their concerns and those type of things.
- [00:02:46.890]And you did a lot of that here this summer.
- [00:02:48.800]What was that like for you?
- [00:02:50.100]Well, we do like to get out in the state
- [00:02:51.920]and to visit with communities and with stakeholders,
- [00:02:54.380]with alums, with business leaders,
- [00:02:56.120]with school administrators, people in the education sector,
- [00:03:00.090]the healthcare sector.
- [00:03:01.570]And we did do a lot of that these last six weeks.
- [00:03:04.580]I logged about 1500 miles (laughing)
- [00:03:07.190]Oh wow. on these various trips
- [00:03:08.830]in late July and August to 19 different cities and towns
- [00:03:13.010]across the state.
- [00:03:13.960]33 stops in locations where we got a chance
- [00:03:17.210]to make those visits and have that dialogue.
- [00:03:19.474]What I hear universally is
- [00:03:22.900]the strong level of support for the university,
- [00:03:25.830]the strong level of feeling of importance of what we do
- [00:03:28.879]and what we fulfill through our three tier mission
- [00:03:34.060]of teaching, research, and extension.
- [00:03:36.590]So tremendous support out across the state,
- [00:03:39.360]tremendous understanding of the need for college education
- [00:03:42.481]and the need that says over 70% of the jobs of the future
- [00:03:46.366]are going to require that kind of level of education,
- [00:03:50.037]and a real firm understanding of that in these visits.
- [00:03:55.074]Strong understanding of the growth and momentum
- [00:03:58.170]that the university has experienced
- [00:03:59.890]over these past three years.
- [00:04:01.250]Three consecutive years of high level enrollment for us.
- [00:04:04.741]Research output that continues to climb
- [00:04:07.605]and that matters for Nebraska,
- [00:04:09.940]areas that are important for us here in the state.
- [00:04:13.030]Innovation campus just recently being named
- [00:04:16.120]one of the best innovation campus research
- [00:04:18.360]public private partnership campuses in the world.
- [00:04:21.310]Among the top 100 universities in the world
- [00:04:24.250]and earning U.S. patents to protect
- [00:04:26.240]our research and discoveries
- [00:04:27.690]that comes out of the university
- [00:04:29.950]along with that strong research effort
- [00:04:31.970]at UNMC at the med center in Omaha.
- [00:04:34.760]A record number of students earning Fulbright's
- [00:04:37.270]to study all over the world, 16 of them this past year.
- [00:04:40.880]So just that level of understanding of that momentum
- [00:04:44.630]and that appreciation of that momentum
- [00:04:46.815]we hear from our stakeholders all across the state.
- [00:04:49.920]Well, we welcome everybody that's in town today,
- [00:04:52.712]but it's our folks who maybe are coming to games next week
- [00:04:56.570]or throughout the season and coming back to Lincoln
- [00:04:58.710]for the first time in several months.
- [00:05:00.450]Let's talk about what's on campus.
- [00:05:02.170]There's probably some new things,
- [00:05:03.130]new features around campus.
- [00:05:04.260]Well, another thing we hear when we're out
- [00:05:05.930]across the state is the common statement of people saying,
- [00:05:09.427]"Wow, the campus has changed and continues
- [00:05:12.010]to change and continues to grow."
- [00:05:13.600]And we have seen some of that occur
- [00:05:15.610]over the last several months so when people come to campus,
- [00:05:18.942]they'll see a brand new student health center
- [00:05:21.772]and home for the University of Nebraska Medical Centers
- [00:05:24.478]Lincoln Division of its College of Nursing
- [00:05:27.480]over on the Antelope Parkway, a facility unlike it
- [00:05:31.430]anywhere in the big 10 or nationally
- [00:05:33.480]where we have Nebraskan Medicine
- [00:05:35.307]now delivering that healthcare for our student population
- [00:05:39.050]here on campus and being housed jointly
- [00:05:41.110]with that education program for UNMC.
- [00:05:44.040]Very, very excited about that new facility.
- [00:05:47.099]If you are going through tailgates today prior to the game
- [00:05:52.500]and you're on the east side of Memorial Stadium,
- [00:05:54.749]you'll see a major renovation that has occurred
- [00:05:58.250]on what we refer to as Memorial Mall on the loop road.
- [00:06:01.380]People might think of it historically as being
- [00:06:03.707]where we've done considerable work this summer
- [00:06:07.258]to replace the north side of that Memorial Mall.
- [00:06:12.130]It has all new surfaces and reuse of the brick
- [00:06:15.095]from the original loop road that was there
- [00:06:18.475]as part of a phase project where that whole space
- [00:06:21.920]will be redone over the course of the next several years.
- [00:06:24.500]So beautiful new setting for Memorial Mall
- [00:06:28.210]for folks to take advantage of in our campus.
- [00:06:31.330]And then our former College of Business Administration
- [00:06:34.210]building, our business college moved into Hawk's Hall
- [00:06:37.300]a year ago on the end of that
- [00:06:39.380]Memorial Mall space. It's been a year?
- [00:06:40.707]A year last August. Oh my gosh.
- [00:06:42.304]Beautiful facility there for our business college.
- [00:06:45.311]Opening up the former home of the college,
- [00:06:48.933]the old CBA building some might refer to it as
- [00:06:52.444]on our city campus, that was recently renamed
- [00:06:55.820]in honor of Louise Pound, one of our most famous alums
- [00:06:59.971]of one of the people who pioneered being an athlete
- [00:07:05.490]as a woman in the late 1800's, early 1900's.
- [00:07:08.880]Went on to a 48 year career on our faculty
- [00:07:11.570]in the department of English here on our campus,
- [00:07:14.301]named now Pound Hall in her honor.
- [00:07:17.550]And we have repopulated that building
- [00:07:19.700]and are excited about that being used
- [00:07:21.270]by our College of Arts and Sciences
- [00:07:22.830]and by our students and by our College of Education
- [00:07:25.500]and Human Sciences.
- [00:07:26.333]So lots of change on campus continuing
- [00:07:28.185]as we continue to develop the campus
- [00:07:30.530]to meet the needs of our university.
- [00:07:32.050]Fantastic, great stuff.
- [00:07:33.250]Always things move and change and that's what's so fun
- [00:07:35.570]about being around the university.
- [00:07:36.640]You just feel that energy.
- [00:07:37.715]We appreciate your time.
- [00:07:39.290]We know you're really busy.
- [00:07:40.139]We'll let you go so you can go get to your seat
- [00:07:42.170]and enjoy this game.
- [00:07:43.003]This is gonna be a fun night.
- [00:07:44.370]It's gonna be a fun season, I think.
- [00:07:45.740]Can't wait, could be grand.
- [00:07:47.070]That is University of Nebraska Lincoln Chancellor,
- [00:07:49.010]Ronnie Green, here on Countdown to Kickoff.
- [00:07:51.140]Pump up your day at Pumpin' Pantry.
- [00:07:53.221]Hot breakfast sandwiches and burritos, fresh coffee,
- [00:07:56.227]drinks, and all your game day snacks
- [00:07:58.266]plus quality fuel to get you to and from the game.
- [00:08:01.853]Just like the Huskers, Pumpin' Pantry
- [00:08:03.950]is Nebraska born, grown, and honed.
- [00:08:07.499]That'll wrap up my portion of Countdown to Kickoff.
- [00:08:10.100]Stick around, Matt Coney has
- [00:08:11.257]the Big 10 Blitz coming up next.
