- [00:00:47.230]it's just a legacy that continues to build here.
- [00:00:50.860]Seeing the national championship banner hung last weekend.
- [00:00:54.740]And highlighted, I'm hearing from Coach Cook
- [00:00:57.410]who's been such a great leader for our team.
- [00:01:00.450]And this team of leaders that are back
- [00:01:03.060]after such a run that they had last year.
- [00:01:06.060]Everything from the Mikaela Foecke seasoned veteran
- [00:01:09.360]to our new freshman hitter, it's gonna be an exciting season
- [00:01:12.380]to watch and to have 19, a record number
- [00:01:16.200]of home games in Devaney, it's gonna be an exciting season
- [00:01:19.070]for us to get through the fall.
- [00:01:20.930]We talk throughout the school year,
- [00:01:22.080]we always talk about things that the University is doing
- [00:01:24.430]to give back to the state or the community
- [00:01:26.290]and we've got a great example of that with us here today,
- [00:01:28.690]Husker Men's Basketball player, Thomas Allen is joining us.
- [00:01:32.120]A couple of weeks ago he put together a service project
- [00:01:34.720]in the Lincoln community to help a grade school.
- [00:01:37.850]And Thomas, great to have you with us here today.
- [00:01:40.010]Tell me about the project that you put together,
- [00:01:41.900]and kinda how you got the idea.
- [00:01:43.490]Okay.
- [00:01:44.630]I organized a back-to-school drive
- [00:01:46.440]for Everett Elementary School
- [00:01:49.770]on August the fourth.
- [00:01:52.330]We got a lot of items such as notebooks,
- [00:01:55.200]bags, crayons, markers,
- [00:01:57.920]and also clothes such as like,
- [00:02:00.040]shirts, pants, shoes.
- [00:02:03.390]The way it came about, I was in my room one day
- [00:02:06.320]just thinking about how I can help somebody else,
- [00:02:08.900]and that's how it came about.
- [00:02:11.480]How'd you pick the school then,
- [00:02:13.480]to help this for?
- [00:02:15.130]I was online just looking at schools that needed help.
- [00:02:18.300]Then I came across a school.
- [00:02:20.560]I went there with Coach Eaton.
- [00:02:24.120]We talked to some of the staff there.
- [00:02:26.450]And that's how it came about with that school.
- [00:02:28.420]Did your teammates help out at all on that day?
- [00:02:31.060]Yes, all my teammates was there
- [00:02:33.090]besides the ones that went home.
- [00:02:35.050]We had some that went home early.
- [00:02:36.620]But most of 'em came out to show support.
- [00:02:40.060]Have you been back to the school since that day?
- [00:02:42.580]I haven't but we're going back, I wanna say next week
- [00:02:46.293]to drop everything off.
- [00:02:48.840]The Chancellor of the University does have
- [00:02:50.070]such a great reputation of helping folks
- [00:02:51.960]throughout the state and in the Lincoln community as well.
- [00:02:54.860]This is a perfect example of how the University
- [00:02:56.980]and its students can help out.
- [00:02:58.360]Well, to see a student athlete like Thomas
- [00:03:01.610]have this idea on his own,
- [00:03:03.960]and reach out to a school that this help
- [00:03:06.890]is really meaningful for,
- [00:03:09.640]in the city and do that with his teammates,
- [00:03:13.700]that's a pretty cool and amazing thing to see, number one.
- [00:03:17.950]The Life Skills program that our athletes have
- [00:03:22.620]and is kinda world renowned in collegiate athletics,
- [00:03:27.720]emphasizes that service.
- [00:03:30.950]I can't speak highly enough of what Thomas has done here
- [00:03:34.440]for Everett and for LPS.
- [00:03:36.820]We have lots of relationships with LPS
- [00:03:39.900]through the University and through the education college.
- [00:03:43.150]This directly impacts those students
- [00:03:45.420]that are going back to school
- [00:03:47.030]to get their educations underway
- [00:03:50.040]here in Lincoln this fall.
- [00:03:51.700]Well, Thomas, well done, congratulations.
- [00:03:53.300]We can't wait to see you get out on the basketball court
- [00:03:55.020]here in a few months.
- [00:03:55.890]I appreciate it.
- [00:03:57.020]Chancellor, always good to see you.
- [00:03:58.130]Good to see you, go Big Red!
- [00:03:59.680]More volleyball action coming up from the Devaney Center.
