- [00:00:03.170]of Rural Futures with Dr. Connie.
- [00:00:05.300]Write and review us to show your support for season two.
- [00:00:08.690]In this episode, Dr. Connie goes solo,
- [00:00:11.410]but with some insight from a clever sidekick
- [00:00:13.940]to explore the future of women and gender.
- [00:00:16.825](upbeat music)
- [00:00:18.313]Don't let others lead you where you don't want to go.
- [00:00:20.930]We must recognize and develop
- [00:00:22.480]our inner leaders to truly thrive.
- [00:00:28.230]Rural Futures, the Podcast where we connect
- [00:00:31.300]thought leaders and doers at the intersection of technology
- [00:00:35.100]and what it means to be human.
- [00:00:36.890]Every episode, we talk with entrepreneurs,
- [00:00:39.440]researchers and achievers
- [00:00:41.300]to create impact for generations to come.
- [00:00:44.640]And now, here's Dr. Connie.
- [00:00:46.730]Hello, and welcome to the Rural Futures Podcast.
- [00:00:50.410]Let me start by describing strategic foresight and futuring.
- [00:00:53.211](ambient music)
- [00:00:55.850]According to Peter Bishop and Andy Hines,
- [00:00:58.230]who's actually been a guest on the Rural Futures Podcast--
- [00:01:01.218]Hello.
- [00:01:02.140]Strategic foresight and futuring
- [00:01:03.681]do not predict the future.
- [00:01:05.360]Rather, they help leaders better understand
- [00:01:07.440]current and potential situations
- [00:01:09.640]while creating a roadmap for innovation
- [00:01:11.500]that guides inspired actions.
- [00:01:13.336](ambient music)
- [00:01:15.740]Futurists use strategic foresight to both expand knowledge
- [00:01:19.110]and to explore many plausible futures.
- [00:01:22.680]Foresight acknowledges the ambiguity of the future
- [00:01:25.490]while preparing leaders to anticipate changes
- [00:01:27.960]and minimize surprises.
- [00:01:30.010]One quote about foresight that says this beautifully
- [00:01:32.720]is from the Playbook for Strategic Foresight and Innovation,
- [00:01:36.300]which was published by Stanford University.
- [00:01:39.080]Foresight is the ability to plan for the future.
- [00:01:42.070]It is a mix of mindset and methodology,
- [00:01:45.030]a view of the future, and the practice of looking forward.
- [00:01:49.050]No one can predict the future, and that is really the point.
- [00:01:52.632]Futurists do not predict the future.
- [00:01:54.650]Rather, they help people understand
- [00:01:56.468]what is possible, and also plausible.
- [00:01:59.723]According to Bishop and Hines,
- [00:02:01.612]futuring is different than forecasting,
- [00:02:03.731]and I think that's a critical point.
- [00:02:05.719](ambient music)
- [00:02:07.657]Futuring is different than forecasting.
- [00:02:11.200]That relies on two key assumptions.
- [00:02:13.440]Number one.
- [00:02:14.830]The future consists of many possible outcomes
- [00:02:17.670]rather than one predetermined future.
- [00:02:19.905]Obviously, there are many things that can change.
- [00:02:22.960]Number two.
- [00:02:24.410]People have some capacity to influence future outcomes.
- [00:02:27.940]Meaning, people really do have the ability
- [00:02:30.373]to control their destiny, or at least elements of it.
- [00:02:33.900]I like to add the point that people
- [00:02:35.700]definitely influence the future through their beliefs,
- [00:02:38.580]mindsets and behaviors.
- [00:02:40.840]What we think about, what we focus on.
- [00:02:43.220]That's what grows.
- [00:02:44.538](ambient music)
- [00:02:47.113]It is now common knowledge that entire industries
- [00:02:49.970]are pivoting in the new economy.
- [00:02:52.100]We see these transitions in every industry,
- [00:02:54.610]ranging from retail to healthcare education.
- [00:02:57.860]While we focus a great deal on industries,
- [00:03:00.720]what do all these changes mean for the global ecosystem?
- [00:03:04.863]What do these changes mean for humanity itself?
- [00:03:08.506]The Rural Futures Podcast will continue to explore
- [00:03:11.310]these types of questions in future episodes.
- [00:03:13.984]Specifically, I have become very curious about
- [00:03:16.816]exponential change and continuous disruption,
- [00:03:19.751]and what it means for women.
- [00:03:21.380]But also, for all people, as new cultural norms
- [00:03:24.630]continue to evolve and traditional roles are questioned.
- [00:03:28.007](ambient music)
- [00:03:30.870]One tool is called future user.
- [00:03:33.520]Future user is used to expand thoughts
- [00:03:35.790]and perceptions about customers.
- [00:03:38.090]It can be used to identify and anticipate the needs
- [00:03:40.860]of target markets by examining changes
- [00:03:43.400]to the customer segment over time.
- [00:03:45.400]For example, what is an 11 year old today
- [00:03:48.400]going to be like in 10 or 15 years?
- [00:03:50.640]What will they need?
- [00:03:51.482]What will their values, attitudes, behaviors be?
- [00:03:55.100]How can we anticipate these changes
- [00:03:56.970]by thinking of their personas now, and again in the future?
- [00:04:01.750]I decided to try the future user concept
- [00:04:04.480]with a real life example.
- [00:04:06.350]I'm gonna try it with my 11 year old daughter Raquel.
- [00:04:09.083](laughing)
- [00:04:09.990]So, tell us a little bit about who you are.
- [00:04:12.559]Who is Raquel Hild?
- [00:04:14.110]Well, Raquel Hild, slash me,
- [00:04:17.260]I like to play basketball, and sometimes softball.
- [00:04:21.110]I've also played volleyball.
- [00:04:23.870]Lately, I noticed you've been taking up crocheting.
- [00:04:26.830]Oh yeah.
- [00:04:27.663]How did you learn to crochet?
- [00:04:29.290]Well, I just taught myself.
- [00:04:31.330]How did you do that?
- [00:04:32.660]YouTube.
- [00:04:33.493]YouTube?
- [00:04:34.580]I also noticed you use YouTube a lot to braid your hair.
- [00:04:38.760]Just today, what did you learn from YouTube?
- [00:04:41.120]Oh, beauty hacks.
- [00:04:42.890]I did some aluminum foil with toothpaste and baking soda,
- [00:04:48.677]and folded it up and put it on my teeth,
- [00:04:50.658]and that should've whitened it.
- [00:04:52.913]So, beauty hacks, life hacks,
- [00:04:55.113]crocheting, braiding your hair.
- [00:04:57.338]A lot of things that you learn from YouTube.
- [00:04:59.654]You talked about the fact that you like to play sports,
- [00:05:02.330]but it also sounds like you like to spend
- [00:05:04.010]a lot of time on your phone.
- [00:05:06.690]True or false?
- [00:05:07.523]True.
- [00:05:08.582](laughs) If you could spend all day
- [00:05:10.820]on your phone, would you?
- [00:05:12.290]No, it kinda gets boring on there sometimes.
- [00:05:15.248]Does it?
- [00:05:16.081]Yeah, 'cause I have no games.
- [00:05:17.302](ambient music)
- [00:05:20.140]Where do you see yourself in five years?
- [00:05:22.060]You're gonna be 16.
- [00:05:23.838]What do you think 16 looks like for you?
- [00:05:26.180]Driving.
- [00:05:27.030]Driving what?
- [00:05:28.086]A car.
- [00:05:28.924]A car?
- [00:05:29.757]What kinda car do you want?
- [00:05:31.236]A bug.
- [00:05:32.150]Yeah? What color?
- [00:05:33.233]Blue.
- [00:05:34.066]So, what makes you want a blue slug bug?
- [00:05:36.150]Well, it's a small car so it's pretty easy to drive.
- [00:05:39.120]Okay, so let's fast-forward another five years,
- [00:05:42.543]when you're 20, 21.
- [00:05:44.080]Early 20s.
- [00:05:45.230]Well, I'll go to college to become an actress.
- [00:05:49.620]You also wanted to be a veterinarian.
- [00:05:51.540]Yeah.
- [00:05:52.373]What are you thinkin' about that right now?
- [00:05:53.860]It's kinda weird, but if you really liked an animal
- [00:05:58.020]and he or she died, then it would be hard.
- [00:06:01.508]Well, that's okay.
- [00:06:02.341]It's good to kinda discover and think about
- [00:06:04.250]those things about yourself.
- [00:06:06.627]Okay, so obviously, things are gonna change in the future.
- [00:06:10.187]Life's gonna change.
- [00:06:11.140]Where do you envision yourself living in the future?
- [00:06:14.359]I told grandma that I wanted to be an actress,
- [00:06:16.954]and she said, well then, you're gonna have to go
- [00:06:18.983]all the way to Hollywood.
- [00:06:20.450]But maybe when I'm older, then I can do acting anywhere.
- [00:06:24.890]Right, but what are we?
- [00:06:25.910]Like you and I, what are we doing right now?
- [00:06:27.950]Podcast.
- [00:06:28.790]Yeah, where?
- [00:06:29.623]At our house.
- [00:06:30.456]At our house, right?
- [00:06:31.289]In Nebraska.
- [00:06:32.122]Yeah, in Nebraska.
- [00:06:33.340]This wasn't possible when I was 11.
- [00:06:36.637]It is different, it's a different world.
- [00:06:38.362](ambient music)
- [00:06:41.190]What else do you want to experience in your life?
- [00:06:43.748]I just want to grow up and have a good career.
- [00:06:47.490]What else do you want?
- [00:06:48.468]A family.
- [00:06:49.388]A house?
- [00:06:50.221]Yeah.
- [00:06:51.054]Where?
- [00:06:51.887]Still in Hollywood or New York?
- [00:06:53.260]I thought about Arkansas.
- [00:06:55.017]Arkansas? What made you think about Arkansas?
- [00:06:58.077]There was a video that the teacher showed at school,
- [00:07:00.827]and it had a diamond on the Arkansas state.
- [00:07:04.176]Is that a good--
- [00:07:05.009]On YouTube.
- [00:07:05.842]On YouTube, of course. (laughs)
- [00:07:08.195]Of course, because that's the world you live in, isn't it?
- [00:07:11.661]YouTube.
- [00:07:12.494]Yeah.
- [00:07:13.327]Pretty sure.
- [00:07:14.413]So, when you're my age, what do you want
- [00:07:16.341]your life to be like?
- [00:07:18.178]Probably different 'cause people have been thinking
- [00:07:21.089]that the world will probably go back then
- [00:07:23.826]when people had to walk to school
- [00:07:26.760]with snakes chasing them with a stick.
- [00:07:30.900]My grandma, she always talked about that, didn't she?
- [00:07:33.040]Or it could go to having robots.
- [00:07:36.276](electronic beeping)
- [00:07:38.290]What would you prefer, snakes or robots?
- [00:07:41.400]Probably in the middle.
- [00:07:43.000]Really? What do you mean?
- [00:07:44.930]Well, I don't really like all the technology
- [00:07:47.223]people are using now, 'cause it just takes over their lives.
- [00:07:52.610]Explain what you mean by that. What do you see happening?
- [00:07:54.990]People crash cars 'cause of phones,
- [00:07:58.800]and with car that drives itself,
- [00:08:01.740]there was a crash with that.
- [00:08:03.295]Would you like to have a driverless vehicle
- [00:08:05.010]instead of driving yourself?
- [00:08:06.830]No, I just prefer driving myself.
- [00:08:09.360]You'd prefer driving yourself?
- [00:08:11.048](engine turning)
- [00:08:13.920]So, you like technology.
- [00:08:15.950]You like having access to YouTube
- [00:08:18.010]and doing all those things, but at the same time,
- [00:08:21.130]you don't want to live a life
- [00:08:22.769]where technology takes over your life?
- [00:08:25.070]Yeah, it's kinda confusing.
- [00:08:26.060]It is a little bit confusing.
- [00:08:28.310]The reason I wanted to have you on
- [00:08:30.560]is because we really need to think about
- [00:08:32.233]what that future looks like for young people.
- [00:08:36.310]Who are you now?
- [00:08:37.610]What is your life gonna be like in the future?
- [00:08:40.600]And the truth is, we don't know, right?
- [00:08:43.024]The truth is we don't know.
- [00:08:44.135]Why do you think I know this?
- [00:08:45.770]Well, I don't know that you don't have all the answers,
- [00:08:47.857]but I think you have some ideas
- [00:08:49.440]of what you'd like your life to be like.
- [00:08:50.558]Do you think I saw the future?
- [00:08:52.533]Maybe.
- [00:08:53.366]Maybe you're a futurist.
- [00:08:54.880]You ever thought of that?
- [00:08:56.220]No.
- [00:08:57.075](laughing)
- [00:08:58.419](ambient music)
- [00:09:01.005]As you can hear, sometimes it is difficult
- [00:09:03.640]to see exactly what you want in the future.
- [00:09:06.200]After all, age 11 should be a time of
- [00:09:08.420]self-exploration and dreams.
- [00:09:10.780]However, there are many possibilities and plausible futures.
- [00:09:14.710]The trick is to decide which one you want to pursue.
- [00:09:18.050]The conversation with Raquel gave us a brief glimpse
- [00:09:21.080]into the mind and experience of one young woman.
- [00:09:24.320]A few changes from her generation to mine,
- [00:09:27.090]well, as you heard, there are many.
- [00:09:29.210]She finds all the information she needs using her cellphone.
- [00:09:33.060]I grew up with a rotary dial phone attached to a wall.
- [00:09:35.869](phone ringing)
- [00:09:38.500]She learns constantly through YouTube,
- [00:09:40.750]which of course, did not even exist when I was her age.
- [00:09:44.120]And she assumes she will go to college and have a career.
- [00:09:47.990]That was definitely not a daily conversation
- [00:09:50.220]in my household.
- [00:09:51.390]My parents were totally supportive
- [00:09:53.140]and absolutely amazing people,
- [00:09:55.310]but college was a pipe dream, not a predetermined destiny.
- [00:09:59.760]My dad worked two jobs, and my mom
- [00:10:01.570]stayed at home with six kids.
- [00:10:03.580]I always knew that I wanted to have a career,
- [00:10:06.030]however, I didn't have a single life experience
- [00:10:08.400]that prepared me for the realities of being a working mom.
- [00:10:11.830]I used to play Barbies with Raquel when she was little.
- [00:10:14.293]I was deeply sad when Barbie dropped her kids off at daycare
- [00:10:18.510]so she could go to work all day.
- [00:10:20.660]She would then pick them up, and go home.
- [00:10:22.910]Ouch. That hurt.
- [00:10:25.050]As Raquel got older, she started talking a lot
- [00:10:27.136]about what her career would be like.
- [00:10:29.387]She keeps changing her mind,
- [00:10:30.950]while also expanding the possibilities,
- [00:10:33.000]which is actually a really good thing to hear and see.
- [00:10:35.670]I mean, an actress?
- [00:10:36.630]Okay, let's just go with it
- [00:10:38.120]and see how that feels for a while.
- [00:10:39.943](ambient music)
- [00:10:43.000]According to the National Center for Education Statistics,
- [00:10:46.370]approximately 20.4 million students
- [00:10:48.900]attended American colleges and universities
- [00:10:50.970]in the fall of 2017.
- [00:10:52.850]Nearly 11.5 million of these students were female,
- [00:10:56.150]and 8.9 were male.
- [00:10:58.010]So, young women are attending college and obtaining degrees,
- [00:11:01.130]but are still not earning the same amount of money
- [00:11:03.260]or being promoted at the same rate
- [00:11:05.200]as their male counterparts.
- [00:11:07.210]They are also leaving the workforce in droves.
- [00:11:09.903](ambient music)
- [00:11:12.130]A report by Gallup in 2016 estimates--
- [00:11:15.080]73.5 million.
- [00:11:17.990]Women are currently in the workforce.
- [00:11:20.340]And 48% of them are actively pursuing
- [00:11:23.330]other jobs and opportunities.
- [00:11:26.110]This is happening for a number of reasons,
- [00:11:28.940]but it's also happening even though these women
- [00:11:30.870]are more engaged than their male counterparts,
- [00:11:33.420]and are good for business, and the bottom line.
- [00:11:36.650]Gallup notes that gender diverse business units
- [00:11:39.140]in retail and hospitality actually have higher revenues
- [00:11:42.510]and net profits compared with
- [00:11:44.540]their less diverse counterparts.
- [00:11:47.173]So, diversity is good for business.
- [00:11:49.380]It's good for the bottom line.
- [00:11:51.077](cash register rings)
- [00:11:52.380]Further, a 2016 article by American Progress
- [00:11:55.976]reported that 42% of working mothers are either the sole
- [00:12:00.820]or primary breadwinners of their families.
- [00:12:04.790]Also of note, this is a continuation of a trend.
- [00:12:08.360]More and more women are becoming
- [00:12:10.190]primary breadwinners over time.
- [00:12:12.372](ambient music)
- [00:12:14.970]Recent publications from
- [00:12:16.430]the American Association of University Women
- [00:12:19.200]on the gender/wage gap in the United States
- [00:12:21.750]revealed great challenges of course,
- [00:12:24.290]and we've all heard a lot of this, right?
- [00:12:26.460]New projections estimate that at the current rate,
- [00:12:29.940]women will reach pay equity in 2119.
- [00:12:35.190]Yes, 2119.
- [00:12:36.993]That is 101 years from now.
- [00:12:41.020]I find it interesting that more women
- [00:12:42.810]are becoming primary breadwinners,
- [00:12:45.040]while still getting paid less.
- [00:12:47.400]How do we expect families to thrive
- [00:12:49.230]in this current economic reality for women?
- [00:12:51.964](ambient music)
- [00:12:54.170]The report also states that pay equity decreases with age.
- [00:12:57.850]The older women are, the greater the gap in pay.
- [00:13:00.470]More on this in future episodes.
- [00:13:02.775](ambient music)
- [00:13:05.810]Entrepreneurship also continues to be
- [00:13:07.590]an area of challenge and opportunity for women.
- [00:13:10.386]FitSmallBusiness.com actually ranked Nebraska 50
- [00:13:13.540]out of 50 states for women entrepreneurs.
- [00:13:16.500]Georgia and Florida ranked number one
- [00:13:18.370]and number two, respectively.
- [00:13:20.133]So, this is just a shout out and call to Nebraska.
- [00:13:23.390]Okay, we can and need to do better.
- [00:13:25.830]I mean, after all, we are the home
- [00:13:27.970]of many great entrepreneurs, but all states and countries
- [00:13:31.450]need to do better for women in this space.
- [00:13:33.844](ambient music)
- [00:13:36.840]Now, what does the future hold for women?
- [00:13:39.338]Endless possibilities.
- [00:13:41.433]Women have more opportunity now
- [00:13:43.590]than any other time in history.
- [00:13:45.698]Progress has been made, but there's much more to do,
- [00:13:49.170]and this conversation goes way beyond women.
- [00:13:52.720]As cultural norms and rules change for women,
- [00:13:55.440]they also change for men.
- [00:13:56.590]Men help raise children, stay at home with children,
- [00:14:00.350]and are not always the primary breadwinner,
- [00:14:02.710]which causes a new set of social rules of engagement.
- [00:14:06.490]Further, people don't always fit so neatly
- [00:14:08.590]into the boy/girl, female/male gender boxes
- [00:14:12.220]we have artificially created.
- [00:14:14.186](ambient music)
- [00:14:16.420]I want both my daughter and my son
- [00:14:18.670]to be able to pursue any future they choose.
- [00:14:21.770]I want them to think any scenario
- [00:14:23.750]is both possible and plausible,
- [00:14:25.570]and that they themselves have the capability
- [00:14:29.070]and capacity to shape their desired future
- [00:14:32.080]through their beliefs, behaviors and mindsets.
- [00:14:36.430]Just as I want Raquel to be happy, healthy and strong,
- [00:14:39.980]and a woman who freely pursues her desires,
- [00:14:43.200]I want the same for my son.
- [00:14:45.290]I want the same for people.
- [00:14:47.330]I want them to support and respect one another
- [00:14:49.990]in their pursuits.
- [00:14:51.420]It takes everyone, not just a pre-defined gender
- [00:14:54.638]to make the world a better and more equitable place for all.
- [00:14:59.260](ambient music)
- [00:15:02.350]We examine the future user concept looking forward,
- [00:15:05.580]and what would I tell my future self
- [00:15:07.300]when I was a younger woman,
- [00:15:09.160]and what do I share with my children and others now?
- [00:15:12.170]I'm approaching this based on my definition of leadership,
- [00:15:14.910]which is the ability to lead one's own life
- [00:15:18.160]while bringing out the best in others
- [00:15:19.830]and making a positive contribution to the future.
- [00:15:23.110]I believe and champion the concept of self-leadership.
- [00:15:26.400]Don't let others lead you where you don't want to go.
- [00:15:29.370]We must recognize and develop
- [00:15:30.930]our inner leaders to truly thrive.
- [00:15:33.487](ambient music)
- [00:15:35.950]So, a few points of advice that I like to share.
- [00:15:39.970]One.
- [00:15:41.050]Pick an amazing partner.
- [00:15:43.040]If you choose to marry, marry well.
- [00:15:45.340]Very, very well.
- [00:15:47.490]There's no glory or win in trying to save or change anyone.
- [00:15:51.330]Don't waste your life or precious time
- [00:15:53.340]on trying to change someone.
- [00:15:55.320]In my younger days, I was that type of woman.
- [00:15:58.610]I finally discovered that it is better to be with someone
- [00:16:01.490]who creates a two-person mastermind with you
- [00:16:03.890]and for you, who complements you,
- [00:16:06.280]and sees the world as an abundant place
- [00:16:09.000]where we both can and should win.
- [00:16:11.130]Whatever that means to you.
- [00:16:12.947]You have to define success for yourself,
- [00:16:15.420]and you want someone who will help you
- [00:16:17.850]work towards your version of success
- [00:16:20.610]while enjoying the sweet ride through good and bad times.
- [00:16:24.086]Having an incredible significant other
- [00:16:26.270]on your team is priceless.
- [00:16:28.240]Thanks Jim, for being mine.
- [00:16:30.843]Two.
- [00:16:32.010]You are an amazingly unique being
- [00:16:34.310]who has the freedom to pursue your purpose and live in joy.
- [00:16:38.190]One way to achieve this is to develop and capitalize
- [00:16:41.300]on your unique strengths
- [00:16:42.640]to pursue the future you want to experience and achieve.
- [00:16:46.870]I really do believe the power of the subconscious mind
- [00:16:50.180]in making these dreams happen.
- [00:16:52.610]More on that in another episode.
- [00:16:55.040]Three.
- [00:16:56.000]Love yourself.
- [00:16:57.670]And love yourself enough to listen to your inner voice.
- [00:17:00.940]That amazing intuition we innately possess,
- [00:17:03.690]but rarely trust or develop.
- [00:17:06.030]Trust and love yourself enough
- [00:17:07.157]to say yes to the best and no to the rest,
- [00:17:10.600]and it really needs to be a hell yes to count.
- [00:17:14.270]Move forward with the hell yeses,
- [00:17:15.940]and trust others with the nos.
- [00:17:18.160]This means you have to trust your intuition,
- [00:17:20.960]not care what others think, and take some risks
- [00:17:23.930]with absolute certainty and bravery.
- [00:17:27.140]It also means that happiness is a key to success.
- [00:17:30.410]Science has demonstrated that your happiness in life
- [00:17:33.050]doesn't suddenly increase after you get a promotion,
- [00:17:35.510]raise or new title.
- [00:17:37.116]Happiness actually comes before success,
- [00:17:40.800]and should be an everyday experience.
- [00:17:43.090]It is something you can improve over time,
- [00:17:45.140]so joyfully and confidently take a seat at the table
- [00:17:48.520]and use your voice to speak your truth.
- [00:17:51.480]You're going to mess up from time to time.
- [00:17:53.560]I do.
- [00:17:54.460]Learn from your mistakes and move forward.
- [00:17:56.850]Know that it is all okay.
- [00:17:58.620]It's really just a process, and that you deserve to be loved
- [00:18:02.240]by yourself and others.
- [00:18:04.230]Four.
- [00:18:05.320]Slow down and enjoy the ride.
- [00:18:08.730]In my generation, generation X.
- [00:18:11.050]You know, the one that is barely ever mentioned?
- [00:18:13.400]We've had more opportunities than the boomers
- [00:18:15.950]because they and other generations before had paved the way.
- [00:18:19.810]However, the conversation about having a full life
- [00:18:22.710]really got missed somewhere along the way.
- [00:18:25.320]We are very career-oriented and egocentric in the US.
- [00:18:29.100]One of the first things people ask is, what do you do?
- [00:18:32.620]And if you can reply with a big title,
- [00:18:34.740]you automatically score points on the social scale.
- [00:18:37.610]If you can't, most people will react to you
- [00:18:39.890]just a bit differently.
- [00:18:41.920]We need to learn to stay out of judgment
- [00:18:44.110]around people's choices and value
- [00:18:45.870]whatever it is they bring to the table.
- [00:18:48.070]So many women in my generation did not have children.
- [00:18:50.840]Some by choice, and some didn't have a choice.
- [00:18:53.920]I was a very late bloomer in the parent department.
- [00:18:57.330]As the second oldest of six, I helped a lot with my siblings
- [00:19:00.336]and knew what it was to struggle financially.
- [00:19:03.014]I didn't want that for myself.
- [00:19:05.172]And we really related that to having a big family,
- [00:19:07.620]so I never wanted a big family.
- [00:19:09.690]I even debated about having kids at all.
- [00:19:11.620]Thankfully, I had a great female mentor
- [00:19:13.580]who encouraged me to have a family.
- [00:19:16.100]She was the only female in a leadership role
- [00:19:18.440]at that time in my career who also had a family.
- [00:19:21.360]She was the only one I knew that had kids and was married.
- [00:19:24.860]She still asks about my kids
- [00:19:26.560]every time we meet, first thing.
- [00:19:29.010]I'm eternally grateful for her advice and wisdom.
- [00:19:32.180]If you want to have kids, do it.
- [00:19:33.720]If you don't, that's okay too.
- [00:19:36.030]Make your choices and own them.
- [00:19:39.140]I've seen too many women my age regret
- [00:19:41.470]not having children because of their career.
- [00:19:45.260]Work is only one aspect of life.
- [00:19:47.570]It's such an important thing I've learned over time.
- [00:19:50.160]Jobs change. People change.
- [00:19:53.520]The situations change.
- [00:19:55.790]Getting married and having children
- [00:19:57.120]were the best two decisions I ever made.
- [00:20:00.300]I only agreed to join the Rural Futures Institute
- [00:20:02.810]if I could have the freedom and flexibility I needed
- [00:20:05.520]to one, stay married, two, be a mom,
- [00:20:10.060]and three, live in our current rural community.
- [00:20:13.550]Thankfully, the organization was very supportive
- [00:20:15.780]and we've worked together to shape what that really means.
- [00:20:19.820]Ask for what you want and need,
- [00:20:21.430]and help organizations evolve to be more flexible,
- [00:20:24.210]diverse and inclusive because a lot of times
- [00:20:26.950]they simply don't know what that really even means
- [00:20:29.610]or how to do it.
- [00:20:30.443]We need to support stay at home parents
- [00:20:32.570]and part-time employment, too.
- [00:20:34.560]We as women, need to help shape this future.
- [00:20:37.126](ambient music)
- [00:20:39.260]Just make sure to enjoy the precious moments life provides.
- [00:20:42.980]If you are too busy, make new and different choices.
- [00:20:45.970]Being too busy does not make you productive.
- [00:20:48.280]It takes away from experiencing the joy of life.
- [00:20:51.237](ambient music)
- [00:20:53.991]There is much more to this conversation
- [00:20:55.610]and to the future of women, so stay tuned for more.
- [00:20:59.540]In the meantime, tell us what you think.
- [00:21:01.570]How would you describe the future for women?
