- [00:00:00.961](upbeat guitar music)
- [00:00:06.490]We really want to establish a relationship of UNL hockey.
- [00:00:10.150]I am the president of our new UNL women's hockey club team
- [00:00:14.130]and I came out to Nebraska, we didn't have a team,
- [00:00:17.360]and so kind of immediately I started trying
- [00:00:19.520]to organize this and then two years later now,
- [00:00:22.230]we are gonna have a full team, a full schedule.
- [00:00:24.850]So, it's definitely getting off the ground now.
- [00:00:32.580]My internship includes me
- [00:00:34.590]in the early education program at the Malone Center.
- [00:00:38.540]We're at the American Civil
- [00:00:39.620]Liberties Union of Nebraska.
- [00:00:40.990]We're a legal advocacy organization.
- [00:00:43.500]So we keep doing individual advocacy with each person.
- [00:00:46.170]I currently do research for the legal director.
- [00:00:49.260]I get to get engaged in my community,
- [00:00:51.090]so I'm helping change the dynamic of Lincoln
- [00:00:53.990]as well as the state of Nebraska.
- [00:00:56.370]This internship has really helped me
- [00:00:58.520]figure out what I want to do career-wise.
- [00:01:02.980]I got into research my freshman year.
- [00:01:05.570]I really liked the fact that I got
- [00:01:07.400]to not only work with Dr. Wilson,
- [00:01:09.240]but also work with the graduate students and learn
- [00:01:11.670]their process and be exposed to different
- [00:01:13.600]types of careers that you can do in microbiology.
- [00:01:18.180]Working as an undergraduate researcher
- [00:01:20.610]helps you prepare for leadership roles.
- [00:01:23.030]Since I'm a senior, I'm able to
- [00:01:24.700]help train some of the other undergrads
- [00:01:26.730]with the different laboratory techniques,
- [00:01:29.230]and I think it's awesome that they've trusted me
- [00:01:31.420]with this responsibility to help teach other students.
- [00:01:36.690]I studied abroad in Paris, France,
- [00:01:38.310]for the French language program.
- [00:01:39.970]I was kind of going around the city,
- [00:01:41.950]looking at different fashion houses,
- [00:01:43.740]researching in libraries, and talking with professionals,
- [00:01:46.710]and it was really a sort of research opportunity
- [00:01:49.270]that could only happen in Paris.
- [00:01:50.870]The people I was in class with,
- [00:01:52.230]they came from all over the world.
- [00:01:53.730]They came from just the most unique
- [00:01:55.980]perspectives and backgrounds,
- [00:01:57.290]but for me honestly, it's been
- [00:01:59.220]the single greatest experience here in college.
- [00:02:01.440]It's definitely helped me find out who I am,
- [00:02:03.800]what my interests are, it's expanded my global perspective.
- [00:02:08.070]I really miss waking up every morning
- [00:02:10.530]and having an adventure.
- [00:02:13.041]If we can make up some
- [00:02:13.874]of these lab kits, that would really--
- [00:02:15.170]My volunteer experience was at CHI Health St. Elizabeth,
- [00:02:18.320]and I do everything from preparing blood draw kits
- [00:02:21.090]to transporting patients.
- [00:02:22.750]So being able to volunteer and give back while also
- [00:02:25.990]being able to get experience into a future career,
- [00:02:28.270]I thought was very valuable.
- [00:02:30.330]Any student is able to stop by
- [00:02:31.620]the Center for Civic Engagement
- [00:02:33.060]and in that office area, we'll be able to help students get
- [00:02:35.450]involved with multiple different volunteering opportunities.
- [00:02:39.290]To make the most of the Nebraska experience,
- [00:02:41.390]get involved and take advantage
- [00:02:42.870]of all the opportunities the university has to offer.
