- [00:00:05.850]Hi, I'm Will Thomas.
- [00:00:07.770]And I'm Donde Plowman.
- [00:00:09.360]Together we co-chair the Nebraska Commission of 150.
- [00:00:13.980]Let's imagine the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:00:17.467]in 25 years.
- [00:00:18.440]Higher education will look very different.
- [00:00:21.030]What do we want our students to experience?
- [00:00:23.530]What research will have the greatest impact?
- [00:00:26.070]How will we serve Nebraskans, the nation, and the world?
- [00:00:29.730]How should we renew and reimagine our land-grant mission
- [00:00:33.570]for the 21st century?
- [00:00:35.360]Chancellor Green has charged the N150 Commission
- [00:00:38.680]to think boldly about these important questions Will
- [00:00:41.410]just raised.
- [00:00:42.243]And to envision the best University for the next generation.
- [00:00:47.430]The Commission brings together a team
- [00:00:49.310]of leaders and innovators unrivaled in Nebraska's history.
- [00:00:53.490]Alumni, business leaders, faculty, staff, students,
- [00:00:57.980]donors, regents, and friends.
- [00:01:00.910]More than 350 people participated
- [00:01:03.640]in brainstorming sessions in April.
- [00:01:06.490]And the Commission has gathered several times
- [00:01:08.980]to discuss what bold innovations our campus could launch
- [00:01:13.400]to meet the future needs of students and society.
- [00:01:16.720]Subcommittees are meeting this summer to come up
- [00:01:18.960]with goals and strategies.
- [00:01:21.250]That's right, Donde.
- [00:01:22.670]We want all voices to be heard in this process.
- [00:01:25.950]The fact is, higher education is changing quickly.
- [00:01:29.720]Universities are in a global competition for talent.
- [00:01:33.160]We need to ask: What makes
- [00:01:34.970]the University of Nebraska-Lincoln distinctive?
- [00:01:37.940]And what goals will set us apart as a national leader
- [00:01:41.570]among public research universities?
- [00:01:44.490]At every step,
- [00:01:45.530]we have heard bold, inspiring, and important ideas.
- [00:01:49.910]Here's one example.
- [00:01:51.540]What if students could customize their degree program
- [00:01:54.480]and put together modules or themes of knowledge areas
- [00:01:59.650]and experiences they wanted to lead
- [00:02:02.250]to the future they were building for themselves?
- [00:02:05.680]Here's another major theme that has consistently come up:
- [00:02:09.070]Project-based learning.
- [00:02:11.100]Every student might participate in a multiyear,
- [00:02:14.080]multidisciplinary, team-based research project.
- [00:02:17.860]Student-led, project-based, engaged learning.
- [00:02:22.020]That could be the hallmark of the Husker experience.
- [00:02:25.780]Participants in our open sessions talked
- [00:02:27.720]about purpose, what the University is for.
- [00:02:31.320]One person put it this way:
- [00:02:33.267]"UNL needs to be a national leader
- [00:02:35.490]in student growth--academic, personal, and professional--
- [00:02:40.300]this needs to be baked into everything we do."
- [00:02:43.220]And here are some of the key themes we have heard so far.
- [00:02:47.060]A University such as ours exists for the public good.
- [00:02:52.550]Our research should meet core societal challenges.
- [00:02:56.440]Every student should engage in research while they're here.
- [00:02:59.900]We are a community where every interaction matters.
- [00:03:03.700]And this is where teaching, research,
- [00:03:06.480]and community service transforms lives.
- [00:03:10.630]Our project is on a quick timeline to coincide
- [00:03:13.570]with the University's 150th anniversary in 2019.
- [00:03:18.090]And we hope to complete a first draft
- [00:03:19.890]of our recommendations by late summer.
- [00:03:22.550]We'll seek feedback from our broad University community
- [00:03:25.700]during the fall, and we'll send recommendations
- [00:03:28.450]to the Chancellor by Thanksgiving.
- [00:03:30.920]We need your input during those fall semester sessions.
- [00:03:35.000]We expect some lively discussions.
- [00:03:38.287]That's right.
- [00:03:39.120]Thanks for watching our update.
- [00:03:40.330]We'll be talking to you very soon.
- [00:03:42.070]And, next time, we're going to throw in a surprise.
- [00:03:45.930]Thank you and Go Big Red.
