[00:00:23.980]with interesting people we've called Catch Up with Chuck.

[00:00:31.470]are the two people who actually came up with this big idea
[00:00:35.810]to have this weekly get-together.
[00:00:38.880]I am delighted to have Katelyn Ideus,
[00:00:41.120]our director of communications and PR at RFI,
[00:00:45.830]and our star intern, Katy Bagniewski,

[00:01:09.430]Since 1973, I was counting up on my fingers yesterday.
[00:01:13.990]I've hired or been associated with
[00:01:16.560]seven different communications directors,
[00:01:20.060]dozens of communications professionals and interns
[00:01:24.630]over the course of my career,
[00:01:26.570]and I've had some really good ones.
[00:01:27.950]I can say honestly that the two of you
[00:01:30.950]are certainly in the very top tier of those
[00:01:34.340]that I've had a chance to work with
[00:01:35.890]in addressing audiences locally, nationally,
[00:01:38.870]and even globally, since 1973.
[00:01:44.107]I think that it's fair to say, our audience
[00:01:48.310]would very much like to know both of you better,
[00:01:51.230]and know what makes you tick.
[00:01:53.740]Katelyn, I'm gonna start with you.
[00:01:56.050]You had a very interesting upbringing and life
[00:01:59.310]that brought you to the University of Nebraska,
[00:02:02.210]and now into a couple of really significant roles
[00:02:05.620]within the university.
[00:02:07.150]Tell us a little bit about--

[00:02:12.930]I agree totally on Katy, so I mean, it's great.
[00:02:16.330]No, well I was not raised in a rural community,
[00:02:19.520]so a lot of people think that's, you know, surprising,
[00:02:22.210]since I'm the director of communications for RFI.
[00:02:24.640]But kind of medium-sized cities, moved around a little bit.
[00:02:27.820]Family ended up in Omaha, Nebraska,
[00:02:30.600]and then came to the university.
[00:02:32.240]I am a very proud University of Nebraska-Lincoln
[00:02:34.990]College of Journalism graduate two times over,
[00:02:37.480]for my bachelor's and master's degrees.
[00:02:40.410]And then my career, I started out in communications
[00:02:44.070]at an inner city downtown pediatric hospital in St. Louis.
[00:02:48.720]And then when we moved back to Nebraska,
[00:02:52.650]started at the university in online education,
[00:02:54.710]and then here at RFI for a couple years.
[00:02:58.460]I have to bring up my husband in this
[00:03:00.320]because he is why now I am so passionate
[00:03:02.770]and inspired by rural places, right?
[00:03:04.420]I live in the country now.
[00:03:05.670]He does farm part-time with his dad,
[00:03:08.400]and then he's a physical medicine specialist
[00:03:11.440]in practice here in Lincoln,
[00:03:12.720]and then he teaches internationally, as well.
[00:03:16.190]But he really showed me how awesome it could be
[00:03:18.083]to live in the country, so--
[00:03:19.930]Yeah, your tires roll on rural roads every day.

[00:03:24.990]And we talk about that stuff around here.
[00:03:26.870]Essentially, everyone that's involved with our team now
[00:03:30.990]has either deep rural roots,
[00:03:33.400]or live in rural communities today,
[00:03:35.460]and so it's not an academic exercise
[00:03:38.520]when we think about what helps to make
[00:03:40.570]great rural communities and how we might contribute.
[00:03:42.650]You know, it's funny because I bring up
[00:03:44.050]like we can't get broadband (laughs), at our house.
[00:03:46.980]It's hotspots for us.
[00:03:48.440]I did want to give a quick shout out
[00:03:49.770]to Adams and Firth, Nebraska.

[00:03:55.170]Well Katy, you have a fascinating story yourself
[00:03:58.590]that has rural roots.
[00:04:01.170]You've done a lot of things in and around this world.
[00:04:05.880]Tell us what brought you to this track
[00:04:08.508]at the University of Nebraska.
[00:04:10.380]Yeah, so I am the youngest of three daughters.
[00:04:13.560]Both of my parents came from rural backgrounds
[00:04:16.200]in Wyoming and Wisconsin.
[00:04:18.420]And then they chose to raise us in a little rural pocket,
[00:04:22.240]what I call it.
[00:04:23.490]It's a small rural township outside of Rochester, Minnesota.
[00:04:27.900]We hobby farmed, and my dad owned a few
[00:04:30.800]rural small businesses that really acted as community hubs
[00:04:34.220]for the people in our community.
[00:04:37.320]And then my mom worked for first,
[00:04:39.970]the male clinic, so she has a chemistry background,
[00:04:42.820]but then decided that she wanted to teach.
[00:04:44.800]And they're both huge role models for me
[00:04:47.270]in every sense of the word.
[00:04:50.690]Rochester, Minnesota is a pretty urbanized place.
[00:04:54.890]I went to school in the city,
[00:04:56.320]but then lived in the rural community outside of the city.
[00:04:59.420]I was actually one of the FFA members
[00:05:02.970]who signed the charter for our chapter,
[00:05:05.080]and I was really involved in 4-H,
[00:05:07.240]and I had a strong ag background.
[00:05:09.967]That's really what led me to the university.
[00:05:12.700]I was showing sheep at AKSARBEN in Omaha.

[00:05:27.090]And we decided to come to Lincoln,
[00:05:29.750]and I fell in love with it.
[00:05:31.670]I'm an agricultural and environmental sciences
[00:05:34.340]communication major, and I really care about rural too,
[00:05:39.700]because of that. (laughs)
[00:05:41.870]But I also think that rural roots aren't needed
[00:05:44.580]in order to care about rural places, because we talk about--
[00:05:47.111]Absolutely true.
[00:05:48.465]Rural and urban collaboration, but really,
[00:05:50.470]that starts with the collaboration of thought
[00:05:53.040]between the two communities and the two different
[00:05:55.870]types of upbringings in order to push change in both places.

[00:06:00.983]I absolutely had to get the showing sheep
[00:06:03.397]and AKSARBEN story in there, though,
[00:06:05.730]'cause it's a beauitful part of who you are.
[00:06:08.920]I think it is the breadth of your experience

[00:06:20.760]Well listen, Katelyn, you and I started having conversations
[00:06:24.370]more than a year ago about developing
[00:06:27.630]a communications vehicle in and around
[00:06:31.170]the Rural Futures Institute that was more than a newsletter.
[00:06:37.650]I've written columns for house organ publications
[00:06:42.600]in virtually every organization
[00:06:44.170]that I've been in over the years,
[00:06:45.470]and have always felt strongly about the need
[00:06:48.640]for the chief executive to not just talk about
[00:06:53.840]schedules of events, but really talk about
[00:06:55.960]the real people that you're engaging with and influencing.
[00:07:00.240]That really kicked off a number of ideas,
[00:07:05.120]and you came up with Catch Up with Chuck.
[00:07:07.510]I want you to talk a little bit about
[00:07:09.220]what you really hoped to accomplish on behalf of RFI.
[00:07:12.440]I've just been having fun. (laughs)
[00:07:15.040]Hey now, hey now.
[00:07:15.873]You had a real job around this thing.
[00:07:17.760]Well, it's great.
[00:07:19.000]I mean first and foremost, the real aha moment,
[00:07:21.160]Theresa Klein was huge in that aha moment.
[00:07:23.360]I mean, she and I really talked a lot about,
[00:07:25.290]I mean, obviously Chuck, one of your biggest strengths
[00:07:27.510]is how dynamic you are as a speaker.
[00:07:30.100]And so we were like, we've got,
[00:07:31.610]I mean we've gotta get you beyond the page or the email.
[00:07:34.270]You know what I mean?
[00:07:35.150]That's where your strength lies.
[00:07:38.060]That's what led us to, okay, how can we do video?
[00:07:40.270]And then really for our small team here at RFI,
[00:07:43.510]it's how do you create a bigger impact?
[00:07:46.610]And a huge way to do that is online.
[00:07:49.350]We knew that at that time, our strongest network
[00:07:52.350]was really our Facebook network.
[00:07:54.383]Right.
[00:07:55.380]And then we also knew that it really had to be frequent,
[00:07:59.870]and that over week, over week, over week
[00:08:02.210]was really how we were gonna build something.
[00:08:04.470]And so all of that kind of came together
[00:08:06.870]into a Facebook Live show, and we chose the name
[00:08:10.700]Catch Up with Chuck, not Mustard with Chuck, right?

[00:08:13.860]We've gotten a lot of jokes about that.
[00:08:15.390]Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:08:16.223]We get it.
[00:08:18.200]We also, I think, a really big piece of it
[00:08:20.800]is we wanted it to be really accessible.
[00:08:23.440]The real goal was to be able to pull together the RFI nexus,
[00:08:26.900]and you talked about this in your very first episode.
[00:08:29.310]That faculty, and researcher, student, community leader
[00:08:32.760]in a way that's really comfortable and conversational.
[00:08:35.910]What's so great about Facebook Live is
[00:08:37.550]it really allows you to do that.
[00:08:38.980]The phone can ring, and you will be fine.

[00:08:42.332]It's much more casual, and real,
[00:08:43.330]and authentic and genuine.
[00:08:44.920]And so that's kind of how it all came together.
[00:08:48.570]I didn't really have numeric objectives.
[00:08:51.100]I've never done a 30-week Facebook Live show before.
[00:08:55.250]But we have had almost 80,000 minutes
[00:08:57.970]of view time on the show.
[00:08:59.720]We've had 100,000 unique viewers
[00:09:02.890]over the course of 29 shows,
[00:09:04.570]and those metrics were pulled last week,
[00:09:06.160]so maybe they're way higher now.
[00:09:08.290]I mean, I think I'm happy with that.
[00:09:10.530]I think we've reached a scope that I'm happy with.
[00:09:13.700]Katy, I mean, you guys talk about it too.
[00:09:16.150]Sure, well I just have to say for me,
[00:09:19.660]it was that discipline of every week,
[00:09:23.633]and you stressed that from the start.
[00:09:26.850]This thing is pretty easy to do for three weeks.
[00:09:29.189]It's a little tougher for 30.
[00:09:31.950]But to continually be thinking about
[00:09:35.660]what are we trying to accomplish here?
[00:09:37.510]And bringing in interesting people, a variety of people,
[00:09:40.980]so that to me, has just been a great fun.

[00:09:45.193]Well Katy, you've been credited appropriately,
[00:09:48.290]with the production and promotion of
[00:09:50.810]this program week, to week, to week.
[00:09:53.550]I want you to talk a little bit about,
[00:09:55.270]again, you're a professional in your own right.
[00:09:58.580]Absolutely.
[00:09:59.413]I want you to talk some about the strategy
[00:10:01.530]that you tried to employ with this.
[00:10:05.680]Different program every week.
[00:10:07.870]Trying to reach those audiences.
[00:10:09.360]Talk a little bit about how you did that.
[00:10:11.580]Yeah, so I think one of the really cool things
[00:10:14.570]about this show is that we got to get guests
[00:10:16.630]from all kinds of backgrounds.
[00:10:18.280]And that gave us an opportunity to target
[00:10:20.740]specific people to push our content out to.
[00:10:25.380]We had people in the university,
[00:10:26.730]pushing that to the university.
[00:10:28.400]Entrepreneurs pushing that all around the country
[00:10:31.090]to other entrepreneurs.
[00:10:33.170]That was really important to me when I was creating
[00:10:35.400]the promotion kinds of tools for this,
[00:10:37.600]and creating the clips, and being strategic about
[00:10:39.710]what we included in all of that.
[00:10:42.230]But then also, just recognizing that we're giving people
[00:10:46.250]a platform to talk about their passions
[00:10:48.980]and about the opportunities, challenges, issues in rural,
[00:10:52.400]and how they can connect to viewers and people
[00:10:55.200]who want to engage back with us.

[00:10:58.803]Well, you all need to know that Katy is an entrereneur
[00:11:01.310]in her own right, already.
[00:11:03.180]You're very early in your career,
[00:11:05.610]so talk a little bit about your career plans.
[00:11:08.770]Yeah, so I am very fluid.
[00:11:12.240]I swear, my career plans change every month.
[00:11:15.360]But I really want to be telling stories
[00:11:18.720]for the rest of my life.
[00:11:20.730]I love video, but I also have found a love
[00:11:24.520]for just web content and social media content.
[00:11:29.500]And so I enjoy helping people tell the stories
[00:11:33.490]about the causes that they're passionate about,
[00:11:35.300]and then also telling the stories
[00:11:36.780]about the causes that I'm passionate about.

[00:11:39.568]So, whatever way I can do that, I really try to.
[00:11:42.160]Whether that's a freelance gig,
[00:11:44.500]or finding a place in a nonprofit after graduation,
[00:11:48.950]much like I have here at RFI,
[00:11:50.470]then that's kind of what I'm interested in.
[00:11:53.290]Well, it's been our good fortune to have found you
[00:11:55.580]and have had your interest in what we're doing.
[00:11:57.950]Well listen, Katelyn, you're clearly emerging in this world
[00:12:02.510]as a really sophisticated communications professional.
[00:12:06.351]You've talked a little bit about the measurements
[00:12:09.640]that you've applied to Catch Up with Chuck.
[00:12:14.190]I wonder if you can talk a little bit about
[00:12:16.330]what you've learned in the process of this last year
[00:12:19.320]with this little gig, and lessons
[00:12:21.100]that might be valuable to other organizations
[00:12:23.910]that are thinking about this kind of thing.
[00:12:26.100]Yeah, absolutely.
[00:12:27.950]Well, I've prepared three. (laughs)
[00:12:29.620]I think there are a million.
[00:12:30.990]I mean, don't you think?
[00:12:32.196]Yeah.
[00:12:33.060]We've just learned a lot within the platforms themselves,
[00:12:35.390]and all these little tips and tricks.
[00:12:36.560]But the three that I would focus on right now
[00:12:38.780]is the first one is just, what's the point?
[00:12:42.490]I mean, we talk about this all the time,
[00:12:43.900]is what's the point?
[00:12:45.360]Who's your audience?
[00:12:46.520]What value are you looking to provide,
[00:12:49.010]and what call to action do you want them to take?
[00:12:51.260]I think you really do have to go into
[00:12:53.880]any communications kind of tactic
[00:12:56.250]that you do with those fundamentals in place.
[00:13:00.950]We knew that, and we knew how the point was really for us,
[00:13:05.570]is our message was really that collaboration,
[00:13:07.540]that bringing the people together
[00:13:08.660]around really complex topics.
[00:13:11.120]The other one was just keeping it simple, right?
[00:13:13.930]I mean, you talked about it earlier
[00:13:16.040]when we were doing this week, over week, over week,
[00:13:18.140]and so keep the simplicity for me, came in organization.
[00:13:21.800]We had just a Google sheet that housed all of our episodes.
[00:13:26.300]It allowed us to see that we were getting the mix of people
[00:13:28.552]that we were aspiring to.
[00:13:30.770]Our metrics were in there.
[00:13:32.840]We came up with a really good flow
[00:13:34.390]of responsibilities and roles.
[00:13:35.930]I mean Chuck, you owned the content of these,
[00:13:38.570]and that was huge because I mean,
[00:13:40.060]just for everyone's capacities, so thank you.
[00:13:42.770]I mean, and then I was the one that was
[00:13:45.750]kinda behind the camera, and Katy in production,
[00:13:47.550]so that was really, really important.
[00:13:49.350]The other thing I would say is...
[00:13:52.670]Oh, in terms of equipment, we're literally doing this
[00:13:54.840]with a tripod and an iPad.
[00:13:55.820]You needed to say that.
[00:13:57.440]Folks who think we're in a fancy studio,
[00:14:00.200]and lights everywhere.
[00:14:01.540]It's pretty much the fluorescent lights
[00:14:03.120]that they put in 40 years ago, and an iPad.
[00:14:06.620]Which was a key reason why I loved that Facebook Live,
[00:14:09.560]'cause I felt like we could get away with this.

[00:14:12.140]That brings me to the last one, is just, just start.

[00:15:16.090]from such a broad array of backgrounds.

[00:15:22.360]who demonstrated their passion for rural communities,
[00:15:27.140]and some very sophisticated thinking about
[00:15:30.200]their potential roles in rural communities,
[00:15:32.940]and kids here again, who are already starting businesses
[00:15:35.370]that will go back to rural communities,
[00:15:38.100]and are gonna have an influence.
[00:15:39.780]I think they were just great myth busters.
[00:15:43.690]And then people like Bob Stowell,
[00:15:45.900]who's just been a transformational community leader
[00:15:48.880]in his own right in ORD for generations.

[00:16:02.640]in the service ship realm.

[00:16:06.670]that I thought were so valuable, and I want to go back
[00:16:09.100]and revisit those episodes time and again.

[00:16:15.340]about episodes that you especially enjoyed.

[00:18:54.430]I mean, we've talked about a lot of these topics,
[00:18:56.270]but there are some really polarizing national narratives
[00:18:58.810]right now that deal directly with the impact,
[00:19:01.935]and our mission and purpose as an institute, right?
[00:19:05.150]It's the rural urban divide,
[00:19:06.880]the technology ethics and access, and this future of work.
