- [00:00:10.920]So I think this is definitely really high up there.
- [00:00:14.083]It's been pretty fun.
- [00:00:15.630]In the competition like those two hours of planning it was
- [00:00:18.160]a little bit tension, a little bit of stress but overall
- [00:00:20.184]it's generally fun.
- [00:00:21.720]Well we think it went pretty well.
- [00:00:23.890]We hit on all the points we wanted to hit on.
- [00:00:25.660]We addressed all of the judges' questions effectively.
- [00:00:29.750]What if any changes would you recommend to their

- [00:00:50.000]I think it's very important what they're doing here
- [00:00:52.360]with personal finance challenge trying to improve
- [00:00:53.870]the financial literacy.
- [00:00:55.850]These skills can be used in the real world.
- [00:00:58.000]You can use this for the rest of your life.
- [00:01:00.483]I think it has a big effect on our future and academics.
- [00:01:04.883]And it helps develop kind of our interests based on
- [00:01:08.580]our skillset.
- [00:01:09.680]So to help with future careers.
- [00:01:11.339]And it's just a really big learning experience.
- [00:01:14.440]My students love to compete so they enjoyed the
- [00:01:19.150]whole process of engaging the competition to get here.
- [00:01:22.920]They've also enjoyed getting to meet students from other
- [00:01:25.830]states and getting to network and they are part of
- [00:01:29.530]an academy of finance that we have at our school so they've
- [00:01:32.963]been learning about personal finance for the last two years
- [00:01:36.170]so I think they really enjoy coming and showing off all
- [00:01:39.390]that they've learned.
- [00:01:40.710]So many people in our society live paycheck to paycheck
- [00:01:44.344]and that is not a good way to live.
- [00:01:47.000]People need to have a secure future.
- [00:01:49.470]They need to save young, they need to plan for their future
- [00:01:53.900]and for their retirement so that they don't become a burden
- [00:01:56.421]on their children or on society.
- [00:01:58.024]So I think it's really important to get kids learning
- [00:02:01.960]about personal finance early on so that they make great
- [00:02:05.203]choices from the beginning.
- [00:02:07.550]We're gonna start with a detailed plan of their
- [00:02:09.820]annual expenses.
- [00:02:10.900]These kids, they have their finger on the pulse
- [00:02:13.650]and they know an incredible amount of investing
- [00:02:17.280]and debt and budgeting and it's been a joy to be around
- [00:02:20.410]listening to their ideas and what people should do with
- [00:02:22.530]their finances.
- [00:02:23.610]We're flying back and they're all going to prom
- [00:02:25.981]tomorrow night.
- [00:02:26.984]And many of them are on sports teams.
- [00:02:27.870]We had a football player, a soccer player,
- [00:02:29.390]a cross country, a track kid.
- [00:02:31.150]They're very involved in other things.
- [00:02:33.170]And getting together with them a couple mornings
- [00:02:34.940]and watching them has been great.
- [00:02:36.540]Texting me at 10 o'clock at night asking me random
- [00:02:38.440]questions as they got together has been really fun.
- [00:02:40.910]First place goes to the great state
- [00:02:42.470]of Michigan. (applause)
- [00:02:49.100]It was nice to be rewarded for the hard work we've
- [00:02:51.160]put in and it makes it a little easier to study when you
- [00:02:53.580]know oh I'm studying for a little bit of money.
