So, let’s go ahead and get started
[00:00:06.330]
on Integrated Pest Management.
[00:00:08.280]
What is it? Well IPM,
[00:00:09.560]
or Integrated Pest Management,
[00:00:11.460]
is a planned and detailed approach
[00:00:13.550]
to managing pests. It uses multiple
[00:00:16.200]
control methods in order to accomplish
[00:00:18.730]
the goal of taking care of that particular
[00:00:21.100]
pest that you’re trying to manage.
[00:00:23.260]
One definition, here’s one that EPA uses:
[00:00:37.702]
There’s a number of different ways that
[00:00:39.962]
a person could probably define IPM
[00:00:42.392]
but that’s one that works reasonably well
[00:00:44.812]
under a lot of different circumstances,
[00:00:47.162]
whether it’s agricultural related
[00:00:49.652]
or lawn applications
[00:00:51.482]
or structural applications
[00:00:53.112]
or whatever it might be.
[00:00:58.713]
The strategy or the steps in IPM
[00:01:00.693]
are important.
[00:01:01.743]
First, identify the pest and
[00:01:03.603]
the stage of its life cycle.
[00:01:05.843]
Second, you need to monitor the pest
[00:01:08.023]
levels and the damage that is being caused
[00:01:10.513]
to determine if and when management
[00:01:12.763]
is necessary. Sometimes
[00:01:14.273]
no control is needed.
[00:01:16.543]
Third, use that information and your
[00:01:18.683]
knowledge to select and use a number
[00:01:20.973]
of prevention and control methods
[00:01:22.993]
to solve the problem.
[00:01:25.353]
Fourth, evaluate the results
[00:01:27.363]
so you can adjust management methods
[00:01:29.743]
as needed. You will know what works
[00:01:31.923]
or what might need to be adjusted
[00:01:34.013]
in the future.
