- [00:00:59.360]I'm Katelyn, this is episode zero of Rural Futures.
- [00:01:02.450]We've been planning this for such a long time.
- [00:01:04.910]So, Connie, why don't you tell everyone a little bit about
- [00:01:07.810]your professional background and your personal life.
- [00:01:10.390]Absolutely.
- [00:01:11.320]I'm kind of an odd hard/social science mix,
- [00:01:14.500]which is great to be a futurist, right?
- [00:01:16.570]Absolutely, it fits perfectly.
- [00:01:18.170]Yeah, so, I mean that's kind of where
- [00:01:20.210]the futurist lens I think comes in to,
- [00:01:23.010]to kind of bring that all together.
- [00:01:24.380]But I have a bachelor's degree in natural resources,
- [00:01:27.280]a master's degree in entomology,
- [00:01:28.830]which is the study of insects for anybody
- [00:01:30.560]not familiar with that concept.
- [00:01:33.130]My PhD is in human sciences and leadership studies
- [00:01:36.100]and my goal with those degrees was to blend
- [00:01:39.660]the hard and social sciences together
- [00:01:42.530]in an effort to help people become
- [00:01:43.960]more entrepreneurial and create innovation for
- [00:01:46.280]a more positive future.
- [00:01:48.210]On the personal side,
- [00:01:50.110]I'm married, I'm a mom, I'm a wiener dog lover.
- [00:01:53.900]I think anyone that's ever had a class with me
- [00:01:56.140]or associated with me knows that.
- [00:01:58.410]But I very much am focused on family and value
- [00:02:01.850]quality of life
- [00:02:03.020]as well as technology and some of the cool things
- [00:02:06.470]we see emerging.
- [00:02:07.430]I have a keen interest in how the planet sort of will
- [00:02:11.230]continue to evolve over time with all the exponential change
- [00:02:14.210]we're seeking now.
- [00:02:15.440]Alright, so that's probably enough about me.
- [00:02:17.330]People will get to know me more as the podcast moves forward
- [00:02:20.200]but what about you Katelyn?
- [00:02:21.130]Alright, thanks, Connie.
- [00:02:23.040]I am a communicator, I've been a communicator
- [00:02:25.870]my whole career.
- [00:02:26.880]I was a journalism undergrad and then I have
- [00:02:29.370]a master's degree in PR and marketing.
- [00:02:31.650]Really what I kind of tell people is I'm a storyteller.
- [00:02:34.750]The journalism, news ed, and broadcast background,
- [00:02:37.880]I always thought I would be a newspaper writer
- [00:02:40.440]and then newspapers have really changed, right?
- [00:02:43.410]So I have really embraced kind of the digital side
- [00:02:47.170]of storytelling and this frequent content, right?
- [00:02:49.530]Even as a communications professional and an organization,
- [00:02:52.330]you're a publisher these days.
- [00:02:53.650]So it's really, really fun.
- [00:02:55.050]And then from the kind of rural perspective,
- [00:02:57.930]I did not grow up in a rural community.
- [00:02:59.970]A lot of times people are surprised by that, being
- [00:03:02.020]the communications director for the Rural Futures Institute.
- [00:03:04.520]But I actually grew up in several large cities,
- [00:03:08.060]and so I think it's kind of a cool,
- [00:03:09.850]I bring kind of a cool perspective.
- [00:03:11.240]I do live in the country now.
- [00:03:13.280]I did marry a part-time farmer.
- [00:03:14.750]So that kind of comes with the territory.
- [00:03:17.570]Absolutely.
- [00:03:18.403]And I think that background has really helped position
- [00:03:21.020]the Rural Futures Institute in a different way
- [00:03:22.960]and is really one of the reasons for the podcast, right?
- [00:03:25.850]Is to get these stories out and create global conversations
- [00:03:29.780]around, you know, what we've seen happening in terms of,
- [00:03:33.510]not just rural, but rural and urban,
- [00:03:35.320]and bringing those two worlds together
- [00:03:37.470]in a thoughtful way
- [00:03:38.920]that benefits everyone.
- [00:03:40.810]And I think your unique perspective really helps us
- [00:03:43.770]be able to do that in a very proactive but also positive way
- [00:03:47.540]that's translational for the listeners in terms of
- [00:03:50.370]those takeaways that we wanna make sure they have.
- [00:03:52.650]And what are you,
- [00:03:53.483]I mean, who are the types of people,
- [00:03:55.260]I mean obviously we've had this conversation a lot of times
- [00:03:57.830]of who are our listeners and I've always,
- [00:04:00.780]yes, they're leaders, but I think we have,
- [00:04:03.000]we've talked about being careful, right?
- [00:04:04.440]With that term leader, too, because it's like,
- [00:04:06.720]you know, a lot of people don't self-identify as a leader
- [00:04:08.910]but if you're an achiever, if you're a doer, if you're
- [00:04:11.330]kind of a gritty person in your rural community,
- [00:04:13.670]or in a start up business, whether that's rural or urban,
- [00:04:16.500]I think it's all of these different types of leaders.
- [00:04:19.750]Talk more about that.
- [00:04:21.650]Yeah, I think you're spot on.
- [00:04:23.010]I mean, I think part of what we're missing somewhat
- [00:04:25.100]in leadership was a lot of leadership theory
- [00:04:28.030]developed in a different era.
- [00:04:29.680]You know, I lead this organization,
- [00:04:31.940]I'm leading these people.
- [00:04:33.770]What we really wanna do is focus on the mavericks,
- [00:04:36.500]those doers who are doing cool things already,
- [00:04:39.090]really leading themselves but at the same time
- [00:04:41.360]leading communities of change and purpose.
- [00:04:44.040]I think sometimes we're not focused enough on that
- [00:04:46.300]and in an era of exponential change like we're in right now,
- [00:04:48.940]we're gonna need more of that whether it's in a university
- [00:04:52.600]or in a community, in a private business,
- [00:04:55.670]because things are changing so quickly we need leaders
- [00:04:57.940]to be able to adapt but be very entrepreneurial
- [00:05:00.650]and innovative at the same time.
- [00:05:02.220]Right, right.
- [00:05:03.053]One of the things, too, that we've talked about
- [00:05:05.270]that I think is interesting
- [00:05:06.770]and even some of the guests that we've already
- [00:05:08.510]started lining up
- [00:05:09.400]are having a little trouble saying,
- [00:05:10.617]"Okay, so what's the connection to rural?"
- [00:05:12.570]Right?
- [00:05:13.730]And I think, though that's, right there is our purpose,
- [00:05:17.270]is we are making this connection even for some of these,
- [00:05:20.500]I mean, kind of high-flying leaders and entrepreneurs
- [00:05:23.250]in this space.
- [00:05:24.083]You are connected to rural, we all are in some way.
- [00:05:26.740]And we're not gonna force that on anyone or anything
- [00:05:29.730]but I think it's great perspective.
- [00:05:31.470]Yeah, I mean, I think what one thing that
- [00:05:33.130]we've seen happen is rural and urban have
- [00:05:35.230]become very polarized, right?
- [00:05:36.950]And so people either talk about rural or urban.
- [00:05:40.350]But at the Rural Futures Institute, we've really
- [00:05:42.220]thought about how do we those conversations together.
- [00:05:44.710]We do live in a globalized society and that's only going to
- [00:05:48.450]increase as more people become connected and we have
- [00:05:50.850]major companies now investing and connecting
- [00:05:54.340]the billions of people who are not yet connected
- [00:05:56.630]and most of them reside in rural.
- [00:05:58.210]So everybody has a stake in this game.
- [00:06:00.900]And as those people become connected, how does that
- [00:06:03.240]change business, how does that change life?
- [00:06:05.600]Not just in those rural communities but the
- [00:06:07.410]urban communities as well,
- [00:06:08.830]and how do we all thrive together in this planet.
- [00:06:12.300]I mean, I think it's great to think about
- [00:06:14.420]going to Mars and colonizing Mars, and all these
- [00:06:16.980]really futurist things,
- [00:06:18.680]but some of the questions I think we ask which are so
- [00:06:21.290]interesting are how do we make it better here now?
- [00:06:24.060]You know, and into the future for your kids, my kids,
- [00:06:27.110]those next generations that, you know,
- [00:06:29.540]we want them to be able to choose where they wanna live
- [00:06:31.800]and have the life they wanna live
- [00:06:33.590]whether they're here or somewhere else.
- [00:06:35.960]Absolutely.
- [00:06:36.900]So you talked about some of the questions
- [00:06:38.820]we're going to ask.
- [00:06:39.740]So tell our listeners, give them a sneak peak of
- [00:06:43.910]some of the questions we might be asking.
- [00:06:46.010]Absolutely.
- [00:06:46.843]You know, I wanna dive into leadership, of course.
- [00:06:48.500]How do they define themselves as leaders.
- [00:06:50.710]But I also really wanna know that personal side
- [00:06:53.270]of leadership because I think along with the technology
- [00:06:56.210]and sort of scientific types of changes
- [00:06:58.270]we're also seeing changes in our social structure
- [00:07:00.900]and our social fabric, the social norms.
- [00:07:03.740]You know, as more people are working and
- [00:07:06.190]dual-career couples, for example,
- [00:07:08.850]or not having kids or, you know, balancing life
- [00:07:11.820]in different ways or even questioning why is the work day
- [00:07:14.940]set up the way it is?
- [00:07:16.160]How can we change that?
- [00:07:17.230]Why is school set up the way it is?
- [00:07:18.680]How do we continue to change that?
- [00:07:20.760]You know, diving into their thoughts around that
- [00:07:23.360]and how they're creating lives that work for them
- [00:07:25.720]because a lot of these mavericks are doing that.
- [00:07:27.840]They're questioning the norms, right?
- [00:07:30.120]But they're also setting a new standard at the same time.
- [00:07:32.630]And that's causing a bit of controversy and conflict
- [00:07:34.960]in our society, but at the same time,
- [00:07:37.140]from that I think can create, be creative opportunities
- [00:07:40.310]that really advance our society in positive ways
- [00:07:43.160]if we choose to direct the future in that way.
- [00:07:46.210]I wanna know what they do for fun.
- [00:07:47.800]I mean, really, it's like sometimes I think we see
- [00:07:49.870]these thought-leaders and it's so serious and it's like,
- [00:07:51.977]"Oh, you know, how are you growing your business?
- [00:07:54.187]"How are you doing this?"
- [00:07:55.560]But they're people. You know?
- [00:07:57.037]And that human side I think is so important.
- [00:07:59.590]And also what do they see as the major changes
- [00:08:03.110]happening in their industries?
- [00:08:04.530]You know?
- [00:08:05.363]How do they see technology changing, but how do they
- [00:08:07.240]also see that influencing workforce development, jobs,
- [00:08:10.890]new opportunities in the future?
- [00:08:12.500]And how are they integrating
- [00:08:13.980]different cultures together?
- [00:08:15.240]We talked about this I think yesterday.
- [00:08:16.850]It's just how are, how are some people's leadership styles
- [00:08:19.680]just different because of how, of their experiences
- [00:08:21.760]or their culture or how they were raised?
- [00:08:23.280]How can we learn from that and kind of
- [00:08:26.190]adapt to that and change?
- [00:08:29.040]I mean, it's just an interesting,
- [00:08:30.660]I think they're interesting topics.
- [00:08:31.720]And we're gonna ask them to tell a lot of stories, too.
- [00:08:33.840]Right?
- [00:08:34.673]That's one thing, too, that I think,
- [00:08:36.210]Connie and I listen to a lot of podcasts so we don't
- [00:08:39.270]want this to be very structured or,
- [00:08:43.160]or super serious, like you said,
- [00:08:44.970]but more storytelling and really giving some,
- [00:08:47.750]some good value and some good takeaways that our listeners
- [00:08:50.560]can put into action in their job or in their home
- [00:08:53.880]or in their communities.
- [00:08:55.070]Yeah we want people to get something out of this.
- [00:08:57.680]You know, if you're gonna invest your valuable time
- [00:08:59.400]into listening we want you to have those takeaways
- [00:09:02.450]that matter to you but that's where we need listeners
- [00:09:04.770]to help guide us through that process as well.
- [00:09:07.080]You know, we don't want to just create something and
- [00:09:09.550]keep going down a path.
- [00:09:10.700]We really wanna hear from people.
- [00:09:12.470]You know, who should we have on?
- [00:09:13.810]What are some things that people wanna know?
- [00:09:16.210]You know, we want this to be like a co-creative process,
- [00:09:19.190]very highly interactive,
- [00:09:21.030]so we get better and we better serve our audience.
- [00:09:24.270]You know, it's an experiment for us, too.
- [00:09:25.640]Something new for both of us and so
- [00:09:28.650]I'm excited that our team at Rural Futures
- [00:09:31.290]and embarking on this journey
- [00:09:32.560]and really then opening up our engagement beyond
- [00:09:35.920]where we are physically and into this global,
- [00:09:38.370]very virtual world
- [00:09:39.500]so we can really crowdsource this whole conversation.
- [00:09:43.240]Absolutely.
- [00:09:44.073]And I think we should say here with that,
- [00:09:45.380]it's obviously, the Rural Futures Institute is located
- [00:09:48.240]at the University of Nebraska in Nebraska,
- [00:09:51.150]and we're very passionate about Nebraska,
- [00:09:53.210]but I think what we're trying to do with this is,
- [00:09:55.250]is bring Nebraska out to the world and then bring
- [00:09:58.540]some more of the world into Nebraska.
- [00:10:00.020]So it's very much this kind of perspective-building
- [00:10:03.220]that we're looking to do.
