- [00:00:05.716]Good evening. My name is Xinyue Wang from Beijing, China.
- [00:00:10.370]I'm a senior double majoring in English
- [00:00:12.028]and communication studies, with a psychology minor.
- [00:00:15.668]It is my honor to be here today to represent the humanities.
- [00:00:20.787]I'd like to thank the College of Arts and Science
- [00:00:24.986]and all my professors and peers
- [00:00:27.535]who have brought me here today.
- [00:00:31.311]Honestly, I could write a book
- [00:00:33.214]about my experiences of studying
- [00:00:35.247]at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:00:37.729]but, long story short, I would like to use
- [00:00:40.709]four words to summarize my experiences.
- [00:00:44.600]So they are challenges, opportunities, love, and belonging.
- [00:00:51.267]For years ago, I came to Nebraska
- [00:00:53.477]as the first generation college student.
- [00:00:56.258]Language, culture, and educational system, all those
- [00:01:02.065]challenges that I could not imagine before I came here.
- [00:01:06.724]So in my first two years, I was confused and lost,
- [00:01:10.040]and doubting myself and the decision
- [00:01:12.465]of coming to the foreign land.
- [00:01:14.647]I isolated myself and did not think
- [00:01:16.979]that I could survive the college life.
- [00:01:19.689]Luckily, I met my English professor,
- [00:01:22.263]Dr. Stephen Ramsay, who I've been seeing
- [00:01:25.816]as a mentor and a good friend for the past years.
- [00:01:29.702]He has been supporting and encouraging me,
- [00:01:32.429]and helping me discover my strengths
- [00:01:34.304]when I was so focusing on denying myself.
- [00:01:38.453]With the encouragement, I start getting
- [00:01:40.699]involved into different activities.
- [00:01:43.189]Also, acknowledging that there are so many students
- [00:01:46.457]who are facing similar challenges,
- [00:01:48.727]but can not get proper help,
- [00:01:51.321]I joined the student organization
- [00:01:53.414]Chinese Student & Scholar Association.
- [00:01:57.701]I also become a representative consultant,
- [00:02:00.169]helping students, in particular the International students,
- [00:02:03.623]who are struggling with not only with their
- [00:02:08.112]studies, but also their lives.
- [00:02:14.449]Also, in the past year, I have been given
- [00:02:16.808]the opportunity to join the
- [00:02:18.143]English Students Advisory Board.
- [00:02:20.712]Working with my wonderful advisor, Kelly Payne,
- [00:02:23.254]and peers, mentoring English and film studies freshman.
- [00:02:27.243]And there are so many other opportunities
- [00:02:29.089]that brought me this far.
- [00:02:32.200]Studying with the college and university,
- [00:02:34.966]I know myself better than ever.
- [00:02:38.025]I learned to understand and respect the diversity
- [00:02:41.176]that teaches me care, and love others
- [00:02:43.750]as much as love myself.
- [00:02:46.380]The other day when my friend saw me
- [00:02:48.069]and she asked me, "Are you in love?"
- [00:02:50.466]Because I was so excited and energetic.
- [00:02:54.218](audience laughs)
- [00:02:56.216]And I'm still amorously because I am in love.
- [00:03:00.564]But not with one person, but with this place
- [00:03:03.651]and all those wonderful people around me.
- [00:03:07.505]I'm feeling a lot of love. I know love is a big word,
- [00:03:10.792]but it's exactly how I feel. Being loved.
- [00:03:15.423]My advisors, professors, and all the peers
- [00:03:18.577]and people in the humanities, the college,
- [00:03:20.943]and the university, care about you.
- [00:03:24.036]So even if I'm thousand miles away from my home,
- [00:03:27.346]I don't feel lonely because home is where
- [00:03:30.233]your heart belongs, and my heart belongs here.
- [00:03:34.294]So this is my last semester,
- [00:03:35.706]but also the best one that I've ever had.
- [00:03:39.231]I've been admitted to the Masters program
- [00:03:41.225]of counseling and student personnel
- [00:03:43.229]at the University of Minnesota earlier this year.
- [00:03:46.830]And being inspired by all those surrounding me,
- [00:03:50.190]I want to spread the love to more people.
- [00:03:53.983]Standing here, I have so many thanks to give
- [00:03:56.322]and so many words to say.
- [00:03:59.619]Life is hard and I want those who are still fighting with it
- [00:04:03.567]to know to not give up on your dream,
- [00:04:05.855]because all your efforts will be worthwhile at the end.
- [00:04:10.509]And remember, there's always someone loving you.
- [00:04:13.285]There's no place like Nebraska. Thank you very much.
- [00:04:16.030](audience applause)
