[00:00:12.163]As the Associate Dean said, I am Mackenzie Strehle,
[00:00:15.022]I am a Microbiology Major.
[00:00:16.696]I grew up just outside of Minneapolis
[00:00:19.462]and I'd first like to thank the College for inviting me
[00:00:21.599]to speak here today and allowing me the opportunity
[00:00:24.407]to reflect a little bit on my time
[00:00:26.746]in the College of Arts and Sciences
[00:00:28.391]at the University of Nebraska.
[00:00:30.563]Although there are a number of things
[00:00:32.588]I could tell you all about to try and recapitulate
[00:00:35.447]my college experience to you all
[00:00:37.717]and illustrate just how instrumental Nebraska has been
[00:00:40.719]in facilitating my success throughout the past four years,
[00:00:43.901]there's one particular experience I had
[00:00:46.533]earlier this semester actually
[00:00:48.211]that I am going to focus on that I think says more about
[00:00:51.956]the education and skills I acquired here
[00:00:55.009]than my academic achievement or
[00:00:57.800]involvement in student organizations ever could.
[00:01:01.476]As a little bit of background information, as I said,
[00:01:03.468]I'm a Microbiology major and I have been working with
[00:01:06.716]Dr. Alan Christianson in the School of Biological Sciences
[00:01:09.976]since my freshman year on an independent research project.
[00:01:13.761]And like a lot of other science students,
[00:01:16.288]when I first came to college, I initially thought
[00:01:18.742]I wanted to go to Medical School
[00:01:20.865]but after working with Dr. Christianson
[00:01:23.091]for the past four years, I have really realized
[00:01:25.586]my passion for basic scientific research
[00:01:29.185]and as a result of both his investment
[00:01:31.643]in my personal success as well as the opportunities provided
[00:01:35.641]by the College of Arts and Sciences at the university
[00:01:38.890]to really bolster my research experiences,
[00:01:41.773]I am instead now headed to graduate school next year
[00:01:44.798]in California, to pursue a PhD
[00:01:47.256]in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry.
