- [00:00:02.750]Welcome back of our coverage
- [00:00:03.810]of the Husker Red-White Spring Game.
- [00:00:05.440]Delighted you could join them at
- [00:00:06.290]University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:00:07.440]Chancellor Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:08.273]I know you were out and around the state
- [00:00:09.950]for the last couple of months.
- [00:00:11.450]How many times were you asked
- [00:00:13.070]about Scott Frost and the football program?
- [00:00:15.230]Oh my gosh!
- [00:00:16.848]I can't count them, how many times
- [00:00:19.450]I was asked, and how many times I was told
- [00:00:22.040]about how excited folks are about the future
- [00:00:25.490]and about Scott now being here as our head coach
- [00:00:28.280]and bringing the staff that he's brought with him.
- [00:00:30.990]So, today's a big day,
- [00:00:33.150]a big venue, and to have the opportunity
- [00:00:36.170]to bring these Nebraska fans together
- [00:00:38.800]in this new era is really exciting.
- [00:00:40.720]Glad to be here.
- [00:00:41.553]Yeah, great to have you here with us as well.
- [00:00:43.150]Spring, always a fun time of year.
- [00:00:45.170]We're getting ready to wrap up a semester.
- [00:00:47.450]We've had an extended winter.
- [00:00:48.960]We can't quite kick this bad weather
- [00:00:50.550]but we know better days are ahead.
- [00:00:52.979]And you've been concerned about the state budget process
- [00:00:56.150]and how that's gonna affect the University budget
- [00:00:57.940]but you got some good news this month, didn't you?
- [00:01:00.430]We did, Greg, and it does seem like
- [00:01:02.800]winter's kind of hanging on for dear life here
- [00:01:07.220]but we have been very pleased in the last few weeks
- [00:01:10.660]as the legislature finished up its work
- [00:01:12.770]and resolved the budget challenges
- [00:01:15.010]that they've been working on this session.
- [00:01:17.231]That we got better news than what originally
- [00:01:21.170]thought might be the case,
- [00:01:23.050]where we were facing some
- [00:01:24.180]significant additional budget cuts
- [00:01:25.950]this year beyond what we saw last year
- [00:01:30.470]but we're very pleased that we came in
- [00:01:33.060]at a much lower level.
- [00:01:34.180]So while we're making a few cuts
- [00:01:36.100]and we've started that process
- [00:01:38.030]to address that budget gap for us,
- [00:01:41.000]we're very pleased that it's
- [00:01:42.290]at a much more manageable level
- [00:01:44.010]while we're partnering with the state
- [00:01:45.390]to get through this kind of downturn
- [00:01:47.630]in state revenue, particularly pleased
- [00:01:50.330]that we had such strong voices and support
- [00:01:53.610]for the University through the legislature
- [00:01:56.240]and through that process this spring,
- [00:01:59.680]just a huge outpouring of support
- [00:02:02.560]for the University as a major economic driver
- [00:02:05.110]in the state and as a leader
- [00:02:07.290]for the State of Nebraska
- [00:02:08.750]so we can't thank all those folks enough
- [00:02:11.510]for those conversations.
- [00:02:14.220]Really good news that we don't expect
- [00:02:16.230]that we'll need to look at tuition further.
- [00:02:19.920]The Board of Regents had already
- [00:02:21.480]considered tuition levels this year
- [00:02:24.167]and next year.
- [00:02:25.810]For next year at a tentative level
- [00:02:28.220]assuming what might happen in the budget
- [00:02:31.210]so we're pleased that we think where we're gonna be
- [00:02:33.940]probably moving forward and that's a very good outcome
- [00:02:37.160]for our students as well.
- [00:02:39.000]That's fantastic, thank you for sharing that
- [00:02:41.210]with us as well.
- [00:02:42.320]That's really good news.
- [00:02:43.180]We know about the hirings you made in athletics
- [00:02:46.340]last semester with Bill Moos and Scott Frost
- [00:02:48.850]that's created such a buzz around the state,
- [00:02:50.770]but you've made another hire
- [00:02:52.434]that's gonna play a critical role
- [00:02:54.210]in energizing the state in a different way.
- [00:02:56.670]What can you tell us about this?
- [00:02:58.120]Yeah, Greg, we're very excited
- [00:02:59.820]that here in about a month's time,
- [00:03:02.780]we'll have our new Vice Chancellor
- [00:03:04.310]of Research and Economic Development,
- [00:03:05.950]Dr. Bob Wilhelm, will be coming to join us
- [00:03:09.100]and to lead the University in this very important area.
- [00:03:11.680]Our research mission is so critically important
- [00:03:15.900]to the state's land grant university.
- [00:03:18.450]So Bob's coming, replacing Prem Paul,
- [00:03:22.680]who many of our listeners will remember
- [00:03:24.899]who we lost a couple of years ago to cancer.
- [00:03:28.550]Steve Goddard has served as the interim
- [00:03:30.960]for now almost two years in that role
- [00:03:33.580]as we've been searching for our new replacement.
- [00:03:37.040]So, very excited that Bob's coming to us
- [00:03:39.510]from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte,
- [00:03:42.270]where he's been since 2011 as the Vice Chancellor
- [00:03:46.340]for research for that campus,
- [00:03:48.332]has tremendous experience not only as an engineer,
- [00:03:51.720]which is his field, but in particular
- [00:03:54.480]around public-private partnerships
- [00:03:56.560]between universities and the research
- [00:03:59.670]in those universities so he's gonna
- [00:04:02.180]bring that expertise to us
- [00:04:04.590]which is an area that we are doubling down on ourselves
- [00:04:08.800]as we move forward.
- [00:04:10.050]And he's got this little challenge where
- [00:04:12.260]over the last 10 years we
- [00:04:13.650]doubled our research output at the university
- [00:04:15.990]and over the next several we'd like to double it again.
- [00:04:19.000]So, he's joining us and we couldn't be more thrilled
- [00:04:22.160]to have Bob here just in a few weeks
- [00:04:24.150]to join us.
- [00:04:25.020]You mentioned Bob's experience at Charlotte,
- [00:04:27.310]equivalent of Nebraska's Innovation Campus.
- [00:04:30.470]NIC has recently opened the new facility
- [00:04:32.500]that opens up some new opportunities
- [00:04:34.350]for business partnering with the University, correct?
- [00:04:37.010]Well, that's right.
- [00:04:38.010]We, in our first phase of development
- [00:04:40.760]of Innovation Campus, we slated to build out
- [00:04:45.190]what's called a biotech connector
- [00:04:47.560]as part of our Food Innovation Center on
- [00:04:49.930]Innovation Campus and we just opened that.
- [00:04:53.640]That's a partnership that will give
- [00:04:56.510]a wet lab business incubator space
- [00:04:59.370]for companies that aren't yet big enough
- [00:05:01.360]to be able to afford that kind of,
- [00:05:02.960]build out of space themselves.
- [00:05:05.285]We already have companies that are using
- [00:05:07.590]this new facility that brings together
- [00:05:10.590]those kinds of start-ups.
- [00:05:11.960]The partnership is a collaboration
- [00:05:14.250]between the Nebraska Innovation Campus,
- [00:05:16.630]the US Department of Commerce's
- [00:05:18.290]Economic Development Administration,
- [00:05:21.000]the Nebraska Department of Economic Development
- [00:05:23.250]here in our state, Bio-Nebraska,
- [00:05:25.350]which is the bio sciences trade group
- [00:05:27.901]in the State of Nebraska, Invest Nebraska,
- [00:05:30.670]which is involved in new start-up companies,
- [00:05:33.170]as well as, of course, UNL, is the university.
- [00:05:36.410]So, we're excited about it,
- [00:05:37.730]excited about the opportunities
- [00:05:39.330]it's going to bring for new companies
- [00:05:41.300]to get up on their feet in the biotech sector
- [00:05:44.800]that we think will be a
- [00:05:46.030]continually growing part of Nebraska's economy.
- [00:05:49.410]That's very, very exciting.
- [00:05:50.840]Well, enjoy the day today.
- [00:05:52.660]We know we have so many folks
- [00:05:54.000]from around the state that travel to Lincoln
- [00:05:56.300]to see this spring game.
- [00:05:57.690]Sometimes this is the only game
- [00:05:58.960]they get to see all year.
- [00:05:59.910]They can't get season tickets
- [00:06:01.160]but they come to watch it anyway.
- [00:06:01.993]Yeah, it's a really cool tradition
- [00:06:03.600]that we have here and, of course,
- [00:06:04.960]we're always one of the biggest spring games.
- [00:06:07.160]I think this year we may be
- [00:06:08.750]the biggest spring game in town
- [00:06:10.363]and giving people an opportunity
- [00:06:13.250]to be part of that experience at Memorial Stadium.
- [00:06:15.890]So, great to look forward to this today
- [00:06:19.370]and to see our players, get a first glimpse
- [00:06:22.500]of what they're going to look like
- [00:06:23.870]as they go through their spring practices
- [00:06:25.790]and to welcome Scott and his team to Nebraska.
- [00:06:28.270]All right, have fun.
- [00:06:29.530]You bet, go Big Red!
- [00:06:30.580]UNL Chancellor Ronnie Green with us.
- [00:06:32.100]At Farm Bureau Financial Services,
- [00:06:34.110]they treat people like people.
- [00:06:36.150]Together they work through what you need
- [00:06:37.910]and create a plan that's right for you.
- [00:06:39.270]After all, it's your future, let's protect it.
- [00:06:41.950]Pre-game continues for the Red-White Scrimmage
- [00:06:43.840]when we come back a sit down chat with
- [00:06:45.830]the head coach, Scott Frost.
- [00:06:47.130]That's next.
