- [00:00:01.870]Welcome back, Sports Nightly
- [00:00:02.870]here on the Husker Sports Network,
- [00:00:04.150]and delighted to be joined in studio
- [00:00:05.430]by University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Ronnie Green,
- [00:00:08.210]with a very special guest, former Husker tennis player
- [00:00:11.200]and current professor and associate dean in the College
- [00:00:13.900]of Journalism and Mass Communication, Frauke Hachtmann.
- [00:00:17.330]Chancellor, we've talked numerous times throughout the year
- [00:00:20.470]with some former Husker student athletes
- [00:00:23.190]who've gone on and been very successful
- [00:00:24.810]in various professional fields, but this has to be
- [00:00:27.236]really extra special for you, for somebody
- [00:00:29.750]who's still with the university and former student athlete.
- [00:00:32.570]Well, absolutely, Greg, you know,
- [00:00:35.140]we talk all the time about how our Husker athletes
- [00:00:38.390]go on to be great successes in all walks of life,
- [00:00:41.440]and how much emphasis we place on that
- [00:00:44.010]when they're student athletes here,
- [00:00:45.480]so to have a former letter winner, four year letter winner
- [00:00:49.850]in tennis, who came to us in the 1990s from Germany
- [00:00:54.510]to play tennis here at the University of Nebraska,
- [00:00:58.050]excelled as a student athlete, as well as academically,
- [00:01:02.110]in the classroom, and then decided
- [00:01:04.320]to stay here and get a bunch of degrees,
- [00:01:06.290]you know, not just her undergraduate degree in '94,
- [00:01:09.820]but then coupla master's degrees, an MA in Journalism,
- [00:01:13.210]and then an MBA in our College of Business,
- [00:01:16.330]and then a PhD, ultimately, and is now an administrator
- [00:01:21.140]at the university here, helping to lead
- [00:01:23.070]our College of Journalism and Mass Communications.
- [00:01:25.969]She did a lot of heavy lifting here recently
- [00:01:29.220]to bring the new Sports Media and Communications program
- [00:01:32.170]in the college to life, and to get that up and running,
- [00:01:36.480]and is kind of one of the leads in our advertising
- [00:01:39.070]and public relations arena,
- [00:01:41.130]the fastest growing part of the Journalism School
- [00:01:44.720]and one of the fastest growing majors that we have
- [00:01:47.830]across the university.
- [00:01:48.970]So, great to have a former Husker here,
- [00:01:50.790]who is leading one of our university colleges.
- [00:01:53.760]Great to have Frauke with us.
- [00:01:55.010]And Frauke, 1991, a long time ago.
- [00:01:57.940]What is it about Nebraska that has kept you here,
- [00:02:01.367]and now we can almost claim you as a native, now.
- [00:02:04.371]Right, I do consider myself a native of Nebraska,
- [00:02:07.090]but I think it's hands down, it's the people of the state.
- [00:02:11.500]I remember coming over here as a freshman,
- [00:02:14.760]not really knowing where any of my classes were,
- [00:02:17.350]or what was going on.
- [00:02:18.340]It was my first time in the United States, actually,
- [00:02:21.120]and I must have looked very confused,
- [00:02:23.300]because there were other students
- [00:02:25.070]who would just come up to me and ask me if I needed help.
- [00:02:27.800]And I was asking them where is,
- [00:02:30.099]I think it was Burnett Hall, couldn't quite find it,
- [00:02:31.640]they took me straight to my classroom.
- [00:02:34.250]And that has been a theme that has kind of continued
- [00:02:37.959]all of these years, and so I think,
- [00:02:41.320]yeah, the people here, the friendliness,
- [00:02:43.513]there's always a yes, there's always an open door,
- [00:02:47.840]and I see that now as an administrator
- [00:02:50.510]and of course, you know, hopefully I'm doing
- [00:02:52.690]the same kinds of things for the students
- [00:02:54.385]that are studying here now.
- [00:02:55.840]Well, let's talk more about those students,
- [00:02:58.100]the opportunities that they have here at the university.
- [00:03:00.980]Tell us about the experience for students right now,
- [00:03:03.317]and what makes us unique for our region of the country.
- [00:03:06.610]Right.
- [00:03:07.780]Well, I think we're a very hands on university,
- [00:03:11.860]our students get to practice the skills
- [00:03:13.980]that they learn immediately in almost all of our programs,
- [00:03:17.510]I would say, and specifically in our college.
- [00:03:21.810]And, like I said, we're very close to our students.
- [00:03:23.750]Professors are very close to them,
- [00:03:25.570]we love working with them,
- [00:03:26.810]we have an open door all the time.
- [00:03:29.060]And that's something that you don't see everywhere,
- [00:03:32.330]especially in Europe, even, it's really difficult
- [00:03:35.930]to get a hold of your professors
- [00:03:37.770]and to try to even take an exam when you should
- [00:03:40.780]at the end of the semester.
- [00:03:41.920]So sometimes you have to wait, and so that's something,
- [00:03:44.500]again, it's a very personal kind of relationship
- [00:03:47.040]that we build with our students,
- [00:03:48.170]and I think that's unique here at Nebraska.
- [00:03:51.000]The Chancellor mentioned some innovative things
- [00:03:52.870]that are going on with the college.
- [00:03:54.260]I wanna ask you about pop up classes.
- [00:03:56.050]That's something that this semester
- [00:03:57.257]you have added on to that, tell our audience
- [00:03:59.940]what pop up classes are.
- [00:04:01.610]Pop up classes, yes.
- [00:04:02.700]We love them.
- [00:04:03.533]Those are one credit hour, kind of like mini courses,
- [00:04:07.360]that we're adding throughout the semester,
- [00:04:10.550]and they're really giving our students an opportunity
- [00:04:13.220]for experiential learning built around events, experiences.
- [00:04:19.760]They infuse new technology, cutting edge technology,
- [00:04:22.780]into the curriculum, and they really allow us
- [00:04:25.730]to be very nimble, and let them, sort of emerge immediately.
- [00:04:30.230]So we started with, and this was actually a course
- [00:04:33.440]that we taught over the weekend,
- [00:04:35.140]where students were able to prepare
- [00:04:37.178]to get a drone license, because that's, you know,
- [00:04:41.210]drones of course have become very important
- [00:04:43.210]in how you report the news and in other areas as well.
- [00:04:47.780]We're actually doing one around the Spring Game,
- [00:04:50.280]that is part of our new major
- [00:04:53.200]in Sports Media and Communications.
- [00:04:55.400]We're doing a one hour pop up
- [00:04:58.200]Introduction to Play-By-Play course.
- [00:05:00.690]Wonderful.
- [00:05:01.630]That will be quite fun, I think.
- [00:05:03.210]So we did a prep seminar last weekend,
- [00:05:05.088]and then the students will be at the Spring Game,
- [00:05:08.840]the whole time, the whole day,
- [00:05:10.000]before and then after, they will also get an opportunity
- [00:05:12.660]to attend the press conference after,
- [00:05:14.890]and they can earn credit for it,
- [00:05:16.340]so we're very excited about that.
- [00:05:18.270]You can just pass on to your students from me,
- [00:05:20.260]the Spring Game is the hardest game of the year to do.
- [00:05:22.679]Guys changing sides-- Right.
- [00:05:24.310]Changing uniforms, it's really really messy.
- [00:05:26.990]You played tennis here, but when you were here
- [00:05:29.710]we did not have the beautiful
- [00:05:31.000]Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.
- [00:05:32.730]Have you been out there yet?
- [00:05:33.837]Of course.
- [00:05:34.670]Have they let you play a little bit?
- [00:05:35.503]I have not played there,
- [00:05:36.336]but I have been out there many times,
- [00:05:38.680]and have watched, and it's such a great experience.
- [00:05:41.100]The viewing experience is second to none,
- [00:05:44.280]and it's amazing how many more people are watching,
- [00:05:47.370]both the men's and women's teams,
- [00:05:49.410]having that facility, I mean, it must be
- [00:05:51.731]a top five, I would say, both indoors and outdoors.
- [00:05:56.690]And, yes, I can't help but be a little jealous
- [00:05:59.560]that we didn't have that available when I was playing.
- [00:06:02.440]But it's amazing.
- [00:06:04.070]So anybody who hasn't had a chance
- [00:06:05.672]to watch the Huskers play there, should go immediately.
- [00:06:10.088]Unfortunately, they haven't been outside much.
- [00:06:12.150]The weather's not-- No, no, but it's okay.
- [00:06:13.950]The indoor facility is excellent as well,
- [00:06:15.920]and there's no wind, so.
- [00:06:17.320]Absolutely.
- [00:06:18.170]Players generally like that more.
- [00:06:19.620]Right.
- [00:06:20.453]Well, it's great to have you with us
- [00:06:21.840]and talk about your experience here
- [00:06:23.860]at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:06:24.930]It's just, it's so neat, and I know if,
- [00:06:26.880]Chancellor, again, this is something.
- [00:06:29.330]An alum wants to stay, and wants to contribute
- [00:06:31.540]and give back to the university is a pretty neat thing.
- [00:06:33.570]It sure is, Greg, and I'm looking forward
- [00:06:36.580]to seeing how those students are gonna perform
- [00:06:38.510]during the Spring Game, you know,
- [00:06:39.680]and lookin' forward to that comin' up here very shortly,
- [00:06:42.870]to see 90,000 people in Memorial Stadium's
- [00:06:45.600]gonna be really cool on Saturday.
- [00:06:47.140]It's gonna be great.
- [00:06:48.100]Frauke, again, thanks for coming by.
- [00:06:49.170]Thank you.
