- [00:00:00.550]Thank you Mrs. Spire, Governor Teaman,
- [00:00:02.500]Chancellor Harden, Regent Greenberg,
- [00:00:04.520]Chaplin Barry, distinguished platform guests,
- [00:00:08.360]members of the faculty and staff
- [00:00:10.330]of the University of Nebraska at Omaha
- [00:00:12.600]and ladies and gentlemen.
- [00:00:14.570]This is a memorable occasion in the life of this university.
- [00:00:18.530]There have been many memorable occasions
- [00:00:20.570]in the life of this university such
- [00:00:22.660]as the establishment of the University of Omaha.
- [00:00:26.010]The first buildings on our campus.
- [00:00:28.250]The creation of the municipal University of Omaha.
- [00:00:31.700]The move to this splendid location at 60th and Dodd Street.
- [00:00:36.410]The increase in tax support for the University.
- [00:00:39.710]The development of programs.
- [00:00:41.810]The 50th anniversary of the University.
- [00:00:44.810]The awarding of state aid by the last session
- [00:00:47.670]of the state legislature.
- [00:00:49.500]The approval of the merger and now the culminating activity.
- [00:00:54.670]But in a larger sense we are here
- [00:00:56.680]to dedicate the efforts of this university
- [00:00:59.420]in the totality of higher education.
- [00:01:02.770]The State of Nebraska can justifiably
- [00:01:04.960]be proud of the educational institution
- [00:01:07.270]which it supports and today represents
- [00:01:10.270]a leap forward in educational endeavors.
- [00:01:14.100]Already possessing in a great university complex
- [00:01:19.230]a great land grant institution
- [00:01:21.660]and a rapidly expanding medical center,
- [00:01:24.460]today the state is witnessing the birth
- [00:01:27.330]of an urban grant university.
- [00:01:29.770]One that is dedicated to complimenting the area it serves.
- [00:01:34.940]This university will have a three fold dedication.
- [00:01:39.030]First to higher education generally.
- [00:01:42.300]Secondly to the metropolitan area
- [00:01:44.670]of Omaha and third to the society
- [00:01:47.970]of which it must become a vital and vibrant part.
- [00:01:54.320]At times the scenes on our campus
- [00:01:57.070]are ones of confusion and turmoil.
- [00:02:00.570]But the confusion is a derivation of abundance not disorder.
- [00:02:05.060]No one disagrees with the general goal
- [00:02:07.240]of improving education and giving
- [00:02:09.281]it greater relevance to the contemporary moment.
- [00:02:13.330]The source of disagreement is one troublesome question.
- [00:02:17.500]How do we get there from here?
- [00:02:20.900]The answers all have a somewhat provisional look.
- [00:02:24.450]The reason is that no one knows for sure what will happen.
- [00:02:29.360]That is a judgment that history must render
- [00:02:32.250]and render it will in due season.
- [00:02:36.110]The University can not,
- [00:02:38.070]yes it must not wait for history's answer.
- [00:02:41.680]Common sense is telling us today
- [00:02:44.500]that the old ways don't work so well anymore
- [00:02:47.560]and it is time to try something new.
- [00:02:51.530]The University of Nebraska at Omaha
- [00:02:53.340]is not frightened because it does
- [00:02:55.160]not have certification of success in the future.
- [00:02:59.260]It is no novice at this task for
- [00:03:02.020]this university has been doing it's task for 60 years.
- [00:03:06.110]And in that time it has learned as well as taught.
- [00:03:09.550]Learned continuously about the hazardous
- [00:03:12.340]delicate business that teaching and learning is.
- [00:03:16.670]This accumulated experience gives
- [00:03:18.410]The University of Nebraska at Omaha
- [00:03:20.480]a buoyant confidence as well as a sober perspective
- [00:03:25.010]on men and events so that where some
- [00:03:27.990]would only see threats and perils today
- [00:03:31.510]The University sees only opportunities in the future.
- [00:03:36.280]The opportunities are multiple linking
- [00:03:38.840]together three main strains.
- [00:03:42.410]The education of youth,
- [00:03:44.650]the humanizing of a great metropolitan colossus,
- [00:03:48.090]the meliorating of the difficulties
- [00:03:50.360]when our society and the world challenges
- [00:03:53.190]each other face to face.
- [00:03:55.897]The 20th century for this university
- [00:03:58.030]is the epicenter of problems and opportunities.
- [00:04:02.260]The University of Nebraska at Omaha
- [00:04:04.410]is today in the mainstream of higher education
- [00:04:08.390]and is confident it will acquit itself well
- [00:04:10.890]in the responsibilities it now goes forth to meet.
- [00:04:15.750]And now it is my privilege as the president
- [00:04:18.050]of The University of Nebraska at Omaha
- [00:04:20.680]to present the necessary contracts
- [00:04:23.020]and conveyances to Mr. Spire who
- [00:04:25.530]is the president of the municipal University
- [00:04:29.801]of Omaha board of regents in order
- [00:04:31.910]that these conveyances and contracts
- [00:04:34.450]may be properly passed to the board
- [00:04:36.560]of regents of The University of Nebraska
- [00:04:38.610]for their consideration at their meeting
- [00:04:41.200]at two thirty this afternoon.
- [00:04:43.350]And so I must say to you that it is
- [00:04:45.610]a personal privilege that I have
- [00:04:48.440]of handing this envelope to the president
- [00:04:51.600]of the board of regents of the municipal University
- [00:04:53.800]of Omaha in order that proper attention
- [00:04:56.100]might be given to these conveyances
- [00:04:58.330]and contracts by the board of regents
- [00:05:00.550]of The University of Nebraska.
- [00:05:04.470](applause)
