- [00:00:00.180]Thank you, Ben.
- [00:00:01.013]Delighted to be joined by University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:00:02.780]Chancellor Ronnie Green as the Huskers get set
- [00:00:05.320]to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes.
- [00:00:06.870]We have an interesting story about a young student here
- [00:00:09.580]at the University from the state of Iowa,
- [00:00:11.638]the Chancellor's helping out with his baseball team.
- [00:00:13.970]What can you tell us about this young man?
- [00:00:15.630]Well, you know we like our friends over in Iowa too
- [00:00:18.177]and we do have, Greg, a fair number of students
- [00:00:21.880]who come to us from the great state of Iowa
- [00:00:24.850]and this young man is a particularly interesting guy
- [00:00:27.900]who came to use from across the river in southwestern Iowa.
- [00:00:32.383](mumbles), who is a freshman in nutrition
- [00:00:35.430]and health sciences with us here at the university.
- [00:00:37.730]He's a first-generation college student,
- [00:00:39.510]which is like about another almost quarter
- [00:00:42.170]of our student population or the first in their family
- [00:00:44.710]to get a four-year college degree.
- [00:00:46.830]He has this real love for baseball.
- [00:00:49.500]He came to campus last fall and he asked
- [00:00:51.870]about being a walk-on with the baseball team,
- [00:00:54.980]but unfortunately by the time he got there,
- [00:00:57.750]Darin had his roster full and there wasn't a spot
- [00:01:00.630]for him to walk-on to the team,
- [00:01:02.840]so he kept thinking about is there any other way
- [00:01:05.940]I might be able to be involved.
- [00:01:08.516]Low and behold he found a spot where he could work
- [00:01:11.980]with the team catching in bullpen sessions and warmups.
- [00:01:15.810]Now he's here helping like he is today
- [00:01:19.240]for our Husker pitchers as they prepare and practice
- [00:01:23.020]for the games and for competition
- [00:01:24.860]and he's, of course, along the way absorbing
- [00:01:27.290]a lot of information, learning how to be a better
- [00:01:29.330]pitcher himself, which will probably be handy
- [00:01:32.440]because he wants to be a baseball coach some day
- [00:01:35.350]and at some level it's just giving him that opportunity.
- [00:01:38.620]It's kind of a neat story tied to our visiting Hawkeyes
- [00:01:41.880]here today with us.
- [00:01:42.810]Fantastic story.
- [00:01:43.760]Well, we're in the month of April.
- [00:01:45.150]It's a very busy month.
- [00:01:46.090]We're winding down the semester here.
- [00:01:48.200]You had a big thing last week on campus
- [00:01:51.260]for research, one for student research.
- [00:01:53.610]What can you tell us about that?
- [00:01:55.210]Well, you know we've talked a lot of times
- [00:01:57.240]about how it was a land grant university,
- [00:01:59.240]we have a teaching mission,
- [00:02:00.510]we have a research and innovation mission,
- [00:02:02.660]and we have an extension in translation of that research
- [00:02:05.340]out to the public missions.
- [00:02:07.390]So, research is a big deal to us.
- [00:02:09.950]We're the comprehensive research campus
- [00:02:12.087]for the state and we're very proud
- [00:02:15.210]of what happens here.
- [00:02:17.450]It's part of our major efforts.
- [00:02:19.900]We're also very proud of the fact
- [00:02:21.490]that our undergraduate students at UNL
- [00:02:24.070]are very involved in our research program.
- [00:02:26.160]We have one of the nation's leading undergraduate
- [00:02:28.990]research programs.
- [00:02:30.030]It's called UCARE, where students work directly
- [00:02:33.660]with faculty members and research projects.
- [00:02:36.630]Just a little over a week ago, we celebrated that
- [00:02:38.950]like we do every year, where more than 450
- [00:02:43.050]of our undergraduate and graduate students were
- [00:02:45.300]involved in our spring research fair,
- [00:02:47.150]where they're presenting about their research,
- [00:02:49.480]they have poster sessions where they present
- [00:02:53.230]what they've done in those UCARE projects
- [00:02:56.570]across the spectrum, across all nine academic colleges
- [00:02:59.560]of the university.
- [00:03:00.610]We're very proud of that.
- [00:03:02.370]It's a big part of their big 10 experience here at UNL.
- [00:03:07.210]For many of these students, whether they go on
- [00:03:09.630]to work as graduate students and on into a
- [00:03:12.240]research profession, it's a very valuable experience
- [00:03:15.810]for them understanding how research is done,
- [00:03:18.570]how to apply that research, how to interpret research.
- [00:03:21.960]Just a big shout out to all of those students
- [00:03:24.350]and their faculty and their coaches
- [00:03:25.880]on great undergraduate work.
- [00:03:28.000]That's fantastic.
- [00:03:28.960]Well, spring is a little slow arriving this year,
- [00:03:31.660]but last weekend that didn't stop
- [00:03:33.550]a lot of Nebraska students from getting out
- [00:03:35.780]and doing some things around the community.
- [00:03:38.670]It's a big community day.
- [00:03:40.060]What can you tell us about that event?
- [00:03:41.900]Well, you know Greg, it's been going on for a long time.
- [00:03:45.410]It's kind of a national event around the country,
- [00:03:49.410]where university students take to their communities
- [00:03:53.000]around them on a weekend to do, what I call,
- [00:03:56.070]a little bit of everything, sprucing the city up,
- [00:03:58.070]sprucing people's properties up, helping people
- [00:04:01.400]that need help, and community service.
- [00:04:05.500]Last weekend was a little cool, right?
- [00:04:08.198]We were trying to decide whether spring was here
- [00:04:11.130]or not here last weekend, but nonetheless
- [00:04:14.100]over 3,000 of our students made their way
- [00:04:17.020]around Lincoln and surrounding communities
- [00:04:20.320]through the big event process.
- [00:04:23.510]Some of our faculty and our staff working
- [00:04:25.550]with them as well, helping Lincoln residents,
- [00:04:28.330]helping non-profit organizations in Lincoln,
- [00:04:31.240]and community organizations in Lincoln.
- [00:04:33.260]Been going on for 12 years now
- [00:04:36.610]and the impact we continue to see
- [00:04:38.830]and very proud of our students for lending themselves
- [00:04:42.430]and doing service for the greater community.
- [00:04:44.480]Fantastic.
- [00:04:45.313]Always great to catch up.
- [00:04:46.146]Looking forward to seeing you at the spring game next week.
- [00:04:47.930]Absolutely.
- [00:04:48.763]Looking forward to a full stadium
- [00:04:50.760]and looking forward to a great win today
- [00:04:53.140]with our baseball team against the Hawkeyes.
- [00:04:54.980]Go Big Red.
- [00:04:55.813]Fantastic.
- [00:04:56.646]Ronnie Green here with us on our pre-game.
- [00:04:57.840]We've got first pitch next.
- [00:04:58.940]Huskers and Hawkeyes.
- [00:05:00.040]This is the Husker IMG Sports Network.
