- [00:00:00.414](steel drum music)
- [00:00:07.890](clapping) All right.
- [00:00:09.110]How's everybody doing?
- [00:00:10.190]So we just started a steel band this year.
- [00:00:12.290]Can we run the tune?
- [00:00:13.940]You did it last time right?
- [00:00:14.990]And this is sort of an extension of the
- [00:00:16.650]University of Nebraska Percussion Ensemble,
- [00:00:18.840]something I've been really excited about
- [00:00:20.210]and wanting to do for several years.
- [00:00:21.760]The students really had to learn where the notes are
- [00:00:23.560]it's completely different than
- [00:00:24.880]keyboard percussion instruments which are
- [00:00:26.290]laid ut like a piano.
- [00:00:27.660]So this one has every other note.
- [00:00:30.452](playing distorted scale)
- [00:00:34.495]And the right one fills it in.
- [00:00:35.618](playing distorted scale)
- [00:00:39.859]So when you alternate... (playing full scale)
- [00:00:47.619]You get the full chromatic scale.
- [00:00:48.890]I started in eighth grade in my middle school program
- [00:00:51.770]they had a steel band.
- [00:00:53.010]Pretty much when I started I knew that I wanted
- [00:00:55.190]to keep going with it, it's so much fun.
- [00:00:57.620](playing steel drums)
- [00:01:05.101]I would say the most difficult part
- [00:01:06.290]was learning the scales and then sitting down
- [00:01:08.740]and really trying to figure out each note of the music.
- [00:01:11.860]And then once you figure that out you get into a groove
- [00:01:14.440]and it was kinda cool just to be like,
- [00:01:16.440]thrown into something new like this.
- [00:01:18.020]It really opens up your mind to what else is out there.
- [00:01:21.437](steel band playing)
- [00:01:26.840]We just started learning Africa by Toto.
- [00:01:29.170]I would have to say that's my favorite,
- [00:01:30.390]it's just groovy and I know the lyrics behind it
- [00:01:33.070]and everyone just really enjoys playing it.
- [00:01:39.010]Everyone in the group is just dancing along with it.
- [00:01:42.430]It doesn't really feel like a practice,
- [00:01:44.100]it just feels like you're playing music with friends.
- [00:01:47.490]This is something that exists at a lot of universities
- [00:01:49.980]but hasn't really existed in the state of Nebraska.
- [00:01:53.190]So I think once people see it and see how exciting
- [00:01:56.000]and fun it is, they'll get really excited about it.
- [00:01:58.570]I just can't wait to share it, I can't wait to
- [00:02:00.000]grow the group, get more pans
- [00:02:01.880]and start playing all over the place.
- [00:02:03.190]I think this is something that, the first time I saw it
- [00:02:05.430]I was completely fell in love with it and I think
- [00:02:07.720]people in the state will feel the same way as well.
- [00:02:10.303](steel drums playing "Africa")
