- [00:00:02.580]Hello everybody, I am Herman,
- [00:00:06.400]I am also at the Nebraska State Museum.
- [00:00:11.360]First, I wanted to ask you something,
- [00:00:13.520]there was a big thing for, a big celebration on Sunday.
- [00:00:18.620]Typically a big family day,
- [00:00:21.120]what's the name of that celebration?
- [00:00:24.120]Easter.
- [00:00:24.953]Did any of you celebrate Easter?
- [00:00:29.000]I hope it was a really nice celebration and it was happy.
- [00:00:33.330]Often times, that's not the case when you get together
- [00:00:36.970]with family, right?
- [00:00:38.340]Sometimes there's a little bit of drama when you get
- [00:00:41.170]to the big family holidays, not only limited to Easter.
- [00:00:48.330]Sometimes you get a little bit of family drama in
- [00:00:51.850]one of the biggest ones here in the United States,
- [00:00:54.380]Thanksgiving, right?
- [00:00:55.213]Sometimes, some people get some unresolved issues
- [00:00:59.450]from the past, then drama ensues.
- [00:01:08.865]One thing is to have some rivalries,
- [00:01:09.900]or some issues from high school,
- [00:01:12.490]but something that actually a lot of people have to deal
- [00:01:15.350]with is hate because of who they are or who they love.
- [00:01:21.810]Maybe the way, the color of their skin is
- [00:01:24.230]or where they're coming from.
- [00:01:26.840]I don't know, maybe you wanted to go home for Thanksgiving
- [00:01:30.320]and bring your girlfriend along, like in "Master of None",
- [00:01:35.050]but you're family wasn't expecting
- [00:01:37.170]that you were gonna bring a girl.
- [00:01:39.840]Maybe they're asking you to explain to me ma,
- [00:01:43.150]that that's not your girlfriend that's your roommate.
- [00:01:48.200]That probably sucks for her, right?
- [00:01:50.270]Pardon my language, that really stinks for her.
- [00:01:53.734](audience laughs)
- [00:01:56.093]Maybe your daughter did not bring a girlfriend,
- [00:01:59.250]maybe she brought a boyfriend,
- [00:02:02.310]but the boyfriend kinda looks like this, oh my god.
- [00:02:08.330]If you haven't seen "Get Out," Academy Award wining movie,
- [00:02:11.330]you totally should, I'm not gonna spoil it for you.
- [00:02:14.070]Maybe one of your uncles is really frazzled
- [00:02:16.690]because they went in, they heard that there
- [00:02:19.240]was a brand new book for kids, tell wonderful stories
- [00:02:23.790]and it was about a super cute bunny and it was great.
- [00:02:27.460](audience laughs)
- [00:02:28.330]And, it turned out that that cute little boy bunny,
- [00:02:31.000]loves other cute little boy bunnies,
- [00:02:33.550]and now he has to explain it to your little niece.
- [00:02:37.490]That's kind of awful, right?
- [00:02:40.028]Well, I am from Mexico, we also
- [00:02:42.645]have family gatherings over there.
- [00:02:44.580]the big one is Christmas,
- [00:02:46.660]because it's we're all Catholics, not really, but you know.
- [00:02:50.146](audience laughs)
- [00:02:51.060]One of my uncles, my mom's youngest brother,
- [00:02:54.450]told me Herman, you're a biologist right?
- [00:02:58.020]You like women right?
- [00:03:01.059]So, tell me of a gay animal, because,
- [00:03:04.820]he went on a horrible train that I won't repeat here,
- [00:03:09.230]but he told me that is anti-natural.
- [00:03:11.760]Tell me of a single gay animal in nature.
- [00:03:16.319]And I said, well I guess it's time to put my degree at work.
- [00:03:20.328](audience laughs)
- [00:03:21.438]Do I know of any gay animals?
- [00:03:22.390]And I said, well let's show my uncle,
- [00:03:25.890]in a humorous way that there are gay animals.
- [00:03:28.030]For example, I told him, uncle did you know
- [00:03:30.820]that 90% of spiders have gay sex?
- [00:03:35.560]It's because it's really hard for them
- [00:03:38.070]to tell boy spiders from girl spiders apart.
- [00:03:41.579](audience laughs)
- [00:03:42.920]They're not gonna pass up an opportunity
- [00:03:44.290]to miss the one out of 10, right?
- [00:03:46.740]So, they just do it all.
- [00:03:48.644](audience laughs)
- [00:03:50.320]They're really happy about it,
- [00:03:52.491]and there's actually a citation of it,
- [00:03:54.275]so grad students, like you were mentioning,
- [00:03:55.920]you need to memorize all the citations, for your quals,
- [00:03:58.720]this is when they come in handy.
- [00:04:00.695](audience laughs)
- [00:04:01.528]But then, he was like, that's a cartoon, come on,
- [00:04:04.230]I'm talking about like serious stuff.
- [00:04:06.320]Oh so you mean like not cartoons?
- [00:04:08.060]Okay, what if I tell you about the conga lines
- [00:04:12.000]that male fruit flies do when they smell a certain pheromone
- [00:04:17.350]and they have a mutation on their brain.
- [00:04:21.225]The fruit flies have this mutation,
- [00:04:22.870]they get attracted to other boy fruit flies,
- [00:04:29.770]that smell like boys.
- [00:04:32.130]And if they don't have that mutation,
- [00:04:33.240]they are attracted to female smelling individuals.
- [00:04:38.696]That's pretty cool right?
- [00:04:40.080]Peer reviewed science.
- [00:04:41.780]Did you know that male meal worms have sex
- [00:04:44.810]with male meal worms, so they can transfer some
- [00:04:48.250]of their sperm, so when those other male beetles go
- [00:04:53.190]and mate with the females, they also kinda get
- [00:04:55.370]a little bit more offspring into the mix?
- [00:04:57.799](audience laughs)
- [00:04:58.632]It's pretty cool right?
- [00:05:00.730]And in order to do that, they need to have sex with a boy.
- [00:05:04.640]Now I'm gonna show you a really quick video.
- [00:05:11.209]Did you know that monarchs also have gay sex?
- [00:05:16.350]And let's see if I can stop...
- [00:05:19.490]Now do you see the black dots,
- [00:05:21.210]and it's gonna be kinda hard to point out,
- [00:05:23.100]but I guess I can do it here.
- [00:05:24.580]Do you see this dot over here?
- [00:05:26.720]Black dot, black dot, on the other one,
- [00:05:29.710]only male monarchs have those black dots,
- [00:05:32.670]so those are two male butterflies doing that.
- [00:05:37.054](audience mummers)
- [00:05:39.110]And there's the citation right there,
- [00:05:41.923]so butterflies do it too.
- [00:05:42.800]But then, my uncle started rolling his eyes (sighs),
- [00:05:45.010]well but bugs, come on.
- [00:05:47.210]Oh you want me to bring in the vertebrates.
- [00:05:49.440]Okay, let's pull out the big guns.
- [00:05:52.810]Do you like deer uncle?
- [00:05:54.920]And then, I showed him this, and he was like...
- [00:05:56.742](audience laughs)
- [00:05:57.960]What?
- [00:06:01.350]He was like, okay, come on, he was obviously going
- [00:06:03.990]for the girl and then the other boy got in the way,
- [00:06:06.300]it's just a mix up.
- [00:06:07.133]It's like, really?
- [00:06:08.710]Let's turn off the lights.
- [00:06:10.757](audience laughs)
- [00:06:12.263]And then, bam, where's the female? (laughs)
- [00:06:16.070]Those look like pretty gay deer to me.
- [00:06:20.260]This happens in birds as well,
- [00:06:22.120]penguins are world famous for being very very gay.
- [00:06:27.500]Those are wild penguins that they are together,
- [00:06:31.690]and sometimes when a female dies and they can't raise,
- [00:06:36.180]they get a male partner.
- [00:06:38.010]So there you go, same sex marriage in penguins.
- [00:06:41.830]In captivity, this happens even more frequently.
- [00:06:45.760]But then, my uncle was like (sighs), but penguins.
- [00:06:48.680]Oh you want me to give you a really big butch
- [00:06:52.130]and manly example of an animal.
- [00:06:53.710]What about the king of beasts?
- [00:06:59.370]Lions are super manly right?
- [00:07:01.070]They should be very very straight.
- [00:07:02.810]Well, there you go.
- [00:07:05.800]A lot of male lions when they're together,
- [00:07:08.594]when they get kicked out of the group
- [00:07:10.040]by the females they form all these clans,
- [00:07:12.090]all these groups and that's how they bond.
- [00:07:15.510]They mate with each other.
- [00:07:17.610]Don't get me started on ducks and water fowl.
- [00:07:20.523](audience laughs)
- [00:07:21.360]They do that too.
- [00:07:22.680]But then he asked me this question,
- [00:07:24.350]and I remember it very clearly.
- [00:07:27.040]But come on, tell me about a superior animal.
- [00:07:30.760]Like okay, we're getting really specific.
- [00:07:33.390]And then I said, well what if I bring one
- [00:07:37.010]of our closest living relatives into the mix.
- [00:07:40.147]I show them one of my favorite primates, bonobos.
- [00:07:43.864](audience laughs)
- [00:07:45.270]The ones in the top left corner are two female bonobos,
- [00:07:48.930]as you can tell by their breasts.
- [00:07:51.050]They're kissing and afterwards they're actually having sex,
- [00:07:54.890]they're rubbing their genitalia together.
- [00:07:58.760]The picture at the bottom, are two male bonobos
- [00:08:02.220]and they're french kissing.
- [00:08:04.020]We've been apart from bonobos for about six million years,
- [00:08:07.640]so that means that in evolutionary terms,
- [00:08:11.000]the simplest explanation is that us
- [00:08:13.470]and our longest ancestors french kissed, that's very normal.
- [00:08:17.110]It looks just like a night at the rail yard,
- [00:08:19.440]1:00 am Saturday night.
- [00:08:21.731](audience laughs)
- [00:08:23.367]Grad students, you should not go there,
- [00:08:25.788](audience laughs)
- [00:08:26.621]because there's conflict of interest policies
- [00:08:28.514]at this university, do not go.
- [00:08:31.110]And then, if you wanna get even more into the mix,
- [00:08:35.100]orangutans do something very similar.
- [00:08:39.960]If you look around the world,
- [00:08:41.240]that's just a map from 1999, it's pretty old,
- [00:08:44.170]of all the cases where there's homosexuality or
- [00:08:48.320]non-straight relationships with animals all over the world.
- [00:08:52.330]Mammals, birds, what have you, happens everywhere.
- [00:08:56.420]Now we know that there's a genetic basis,
- [00:08:59.180]you excise a gene, you remove a gene from mice
- [00:09:02.600]and some female mice like other female mice,
- [00:09:05.290]and some male mice like, where they like everything.
- [00:09:09.030]To answer a question to my uncle,
- [00:09:11.421]is homosexuality anti-natural?
- [00:09:12.870]I'll refer you to one of the most famous evolutionary
- [00:09:15.340]biologists of all time, J.B.S. Haldane,
- [00:09:18.790]and he said well I think nature
- [00:09:20.820]is queerer that we can suppose.
- [00:09:24.591]He said from the Southeastern Blueberry
- [00:09:28.670]of the United States to more than 130 different species
- [00:09:31.830]of birds worldwide, the birds and the bees,
- [00:09:33.750]literally are queer.
- [00:09:37.370]Just think, how can nature be wrong,
- [00:09:40.810]if even nature loves scarlet and crimson,
- [00:09:44.950]hashtag even nature loves scarlet and cream.
- [00:09:47.924](audience laughs)
- [00:09:49.220]Hashtag husker woodpecker, hashtag hate will never win,
- [00:09:54.060]and hashtag we wear black on Wednesdays in this university.
- [00:09:57.940]Thank you very much.
- [00:09:59.521](audience claps)
