- [00:00:00.006]All right, thank you Ben.
- [00:00:01.060]Delighted to be joined now by the Chancellor of the
- [00:00:03.126]University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:05.308]Love spring time, love this time of year,
- [00:00:07.027]I know you do as well, gives you a chance to kind of get out
- [00:00:09.135]and go visit some folks around the state.
- [00:00:12.066]You recently did that, what can you tell us about your trek?
- [00:00:15.134]Oh great, great to be back in baseball here in Lincoln.
- [00:00:18.843]And our returning big 10 champions this year,
- [00:00:21.577]taking on the Gophers in their first game.
- [00:00:23.543]So I hope everybody's enjoying the game.
- [00:00:25.896]Yeah, I did have the opportunity these last couple weeks
- [00:00:30.548]to really get out across the state of Nebraska.
- [00:00:33.680]I love doing that, having the chance to engage
- [00:00:36.457]with alumni, with stakeholders,
- [00:00:38.110]and supporters of the University,
- [00:00:39.896]and just citizens of the state, in general.
- [00:00:42.207]So we have had sessions that were hosted
- [00:00:45.428]by the Nebraska Alumni Association.
- [00:00:47.908]The first in Lincoln and Omaha two weeks ago,
- [00:00:50.910]followed by gatherings in Hastings, and in North Plat,
- [00:00:55.632]in Scotts Bluff, and St. Paul last week.
- [00:01:00.487]And had really good conversations with groups of those
- [00:01:03.970]folks in each location, a lot of opportunity
- [00:01:07.055]to visit with media across the state as well.
- [00:01:10.556]You know when you go from Lincoln to Scott's Bluff,
- [00:01:13.044]you cross a lot of territory, a lot of great territory.
- [00:01:18.210]And so we put on about 1,000 miles roughly in that trip.
- [00:01:23.349]And our purpose there was really to talk about two things.
- [00:01:27.065]Talk about the momentum the University is experiencing
- [00:01:29.935]that we talked about a lot, one of our various broadcasts
- [00:01:33.082]talk about the planning that we're doing,
- [00:01:36.046]moving into our next period of growth.
- [00:01:38.848]Our 150th anniversary coming up here soon.
- [00:01:42.735]And then we also talked about the budget,
- [00:01:44.906]and the state budget issues that are being resolved
- [00:01:47.773]as we speak by the legislature, and our role in that,
- [00:01:51.492]and kind of how we're partnering with the state
- [00:01:54.518]to move forward through what has been a little tougher
- [00:01:56.855]budget times as well.
- [00:01:58.878]So, great gatherings in all of those locations.
- [00:02:01.549]Visiting with hundreds of our supporters
- [00:02:04.316]and stakeholders across the state.
- [00:02:06.187]Let's talk more about some of those long term goals
- [00:02:08.629]that you have, and I know that you talked about
- [00:02:11.044]continuing to grow, is that still part of the plan as well?
- [00:02:13.702]Yeah so we talked a lot, Greg, about our enrollment growth
- [00:02:17.350]on the student side, we're going on our third year
- [00:02:20.756]of record enrollment looking at this fall,
- [00:02:23.509]coming up in the fall of '18, we're already
- [00:02:26.437]kind of tracking our incoming freshman class for the fall.
- [00:02:30.006]And it's looking very good for us to have another
- [00:02:32.089]significant jump in our enrollment this fall.
- [00:02:35.400]So, talked about that growth, and what that means for us.
- [00:02:38.871]What it means for the state, what it means
- [00:02:40.513]for workforce development and economic development
- [00:02:42.947]in the state.
- [00:02:44.366]And then I did mention to them a lot about
- [00:02:47.348]our research growth as well, right?
- [00:02:49.461]And we talked about how you know when you live in your
- [00:02:53.410]own backyard, you don't recognize the things that are
- [00:02:55.921]closest to you, and how powerful they are.
- [00:03:00.564]We're all really guilty of that, I think.
- [00:03:02.777]We used to talk about living in Colorado in the mountains,
- [00:03:05.064]and we never skied because the mountains were there, right?
- [00:03:07.362]In Nebraska, at the University, we have world leading groups
- [00:03:12.301]in a whole variety of areas in our research,
- [00:03:16.702]in our education efforts, that goes
- [00:03:18.615]from business engineering, to law, to ag and water and food,
- [00:03:23.244]to fine and performing arts, to journalism across the board.
- [00:03:28.367]And as we plan for our growth moving forward,
- [00:03:31.556]we're very excited about the fact that here in less
- [00:03:34.635]than a year in February of 2019,
- [00:03:37.780]we'll celebrate our 150th anniversary
- [00:03:40.798]of our founding of the University of Nebraska.
- [00:03:43.696]And we just launched, this past month, what we're calling
- [00:03:46.826]the N150 commission, that is a planning group,
- [00:03:51.059]broadly across the University, across external stakeholders
- [00:03:54.784]of the University, who are planning
- [00:03:57.042]our next strategic plan for the University.
- [00:03:59.563]And planning that growth with our plan to formally launch
- [00:04:03.091]that plan, February 15, 2019, so excited about that group.
- [00:04:08.466]Being led by Donde Plowman, and Will Thomas,
- [00:04:11.495]who's a professor of history at the University.
- [00:04:14.983]Number 150 was meant to have about 150 people involved
- [00:04:18.697]in these various tasks we're building.
- [00:04:20.444]We're up to about 165, but that's okay.
- [00:04:22.886]Over 150 people that are engaging across all areas
- [00:04:27.000]of development in the strategic planning.
- [00:04:29.284]So quite excited about that.
- [00:04:30.481]Fantastic, well I understand the University also receives
- [00:04:32.279]positive recognition recently in some rankings
- [00:04:35.077]of some of your programs, what can you tell us about that?
- [00:04:38.289]Well, you know, we're very proud of the fact
- [00:04:39.872]that we're a top 50 public research University in the
- [00:04:43.023]United States, it's a big deal,
- [00:04:44.277]against very powerful competition
- [00:04:47.640]out there in the higher ed sector.
- [00:04:50.762]This past couple of weeks we've gotten a couple of
- [00:04:53.166]very specific rankings that we're quite proud of.
- [00:04:55.699]One is that our Ag and Forestry programs,
- [00:04:58.324]so Ag and natural resources you might think about,
- [00:05:01.224]our Institute of Ag and Natural Resources
- [00:05:03.478]is in the top 20 university's in the nation in that field.
- [00:05:09.590]And in the top 50 world-wide, so if you think about that,
- [00:05:13.779]we have partners all over the world that we work with
- [00:05:16.180]in that field, that would be hundreds and hundreds
- [00:05:19.961]of university's represented in that group.
- [00:05:23.007]So, we're quite proud of that ranking of our ag
- [00:05:26.599]and natural resource programs.
- [00:05:28.180]It fits for Nebraska, certainly,
- [00:05:29.662]that we should lead in that area.
- [00:05:31.903]And then in our College and Business,
- [00:05:34.002]just this past week we learned that our NBA program
- [00:05:37.907]that is online program, is ranked as number one in the
- [00:05:42.136]nation, as the best value online NBA program out there.
- [00:05:46.429]And also at rank number one in a statistic that's important
- [00:05:50.714]of the alumni salary increase from receiving that NBA
- [00:05:55.511]that goes with that degree, so very proud of our efforts
- [00:05:59.575]in our Masters in Business Administration program
- [00:06:02.537]at our College and Business are reflected in that
- [00:06:05.143]very top ranking in the field.
- [00:06:07.413]So conducted world class work here at the University
- [00:06:09.938]of Nebraska is what we're all about.
- [00:06:11.671]Look forward to a big win today, go Big Red.
- [00:06:14.621]That is University of Nebraska-Lincoln chancellor
