- [00:00:04.640]Getting a college degree is super important to me.
- [00:00:08.410]Overcoming the statistic within my family
- [00:00:11.520]is the biggest bar I set for myself.
- [00:00:15.280]My parents haven't, didn't go to college,
- [00:00:19.820]so me being the first one to step on campus,
- [00:00:23.410]I had to fend for myself,
- [00:00:26.540]and it was hard.
- [00:00:28.770]And then having to tell my parents,
- [00:00:30.910]oh yeah this is what's happening
- [00:00:32.270]and they will find it cool,
- [00:00:33.490]but I'm just finding it stressful cause I don't know.
- [00:00:37.110]I don't think I could put into words
- [00:00:38.270]how much it would mean to me,
- [00:00:40.280]just having the opportunity to say that I graduated
- [00:00:42.640]from a higher institution.
- [00:00:44.310]From when I was a young age, my parents always instill,
- [00:00:47.270]oh you're going to college,
- [00:00:48.580]like there's no doubts about that.
- [00:00:50.720]My parents, since they didn't go to college,
- [00:00:54.150]they struggled all of my life, and continue to struggle,
- [00:00:57.190]so going to college means that I won't struggle.
- [00:01:02.150]I never thought that I would have this many opportunities
- [00:01:05.580]at an institution like this,
- [00:01:07.640]so just being a part of the First Husker Program,
- [00:01:10.600]and being a first generation student
- [00:01:12.040]has given me so many experiences that I never thought
- [00:01:14.700]I would have, so I'm very honored to be a first gen student.
- [00:01:18.130]My brother is 13, he's an eighth grader, so far,
- [00:01:21.980]and yes, I feel like I'm a role model in a way,
- [00:01:24.880]because I even bring him to college with me sometimes
- [00:01:29.060]just to see what college campus is about,
- [00:01:32.330]and seeing his eyes when he came into the Jackie Gaughan,
- [00:01:36.620]he was kinda like, whoa, I wanna be here.
- [00:01:40.134]I'm the oldest of my family,
- [00:01:43.320]so they wanted me to set an example for my younger
- [00:01:46.340]brother and sister,
- [00:01:47.230]saying, oh since she's going in this right direction,
- [00:01:49.830]I want you to follow in your sister's footsteps.
- [00:01:52.540]So them seeing me going to college
- [00:01:55.366]inspires them to, oh well my sister is doing it,
- [00:02:00.010]so I can do it too.
