- [00:00:04.130]Friends, mostly, yeah,
- [00:00:06.490]friends and talking to my family about what's happening
- [00:00:10.710]since they don't really know
- [00:00:11.890]but they get the information through me.
- [00:00:14.630]And then my friends,
- [00:00:15.569]I'll tell them certain things,
- [00:00:17.530]and they'll be like, oh well we don't have to focus
- [00:00:20.430]about that right now,
- [00:00:21.263]or like, I'm going through the same things,
- [00:00:23.620]so we talk about it, and it helps me
- [00:00:25.720]because I know I'm not alone with paying bills and stuff.
- [00:00:29.150]I know, for me, Oasis helped me a lot,
- [00:00:33.660]what resources are where,
- [00:00:36.072]time management, study skills,
- [00:00:39.810]how to talk to professors, and how to review your syllabus.
- [00:00:42.450]If it wasn't for my mentors,
- [00:00:43.790]if it wasn't for those little lectures that we should know,
- [00:00:47.120]like College 101, I think I'd probably be lost.
- [00:00:50.370]I was invited to be a part of a program
- [00:00:53.070]called First Husker, that's put on by first year experience
- [00:00:56.080]transition programs.
- [00:00:57.820]They basically have a four day program before classes start,
- [00:01:00.970]you get to move in early,
- [00:01:02.160]and they basically teach you so many things,
- [00:01:04.750]how to succeed in large classrooms,
- [00:01:07.000]money management, test prep, reading strategies,
- [00:01:11.310]so many different opportunities to grow and learn
- [00:01:14.130]as a student.
- [00:01:15.580]That program helped me so much,
- [00:01:16.940]I'm actually a peer mentor for it now.
- [00:01:19.040]The Dream Big Academy, which is a business academy
- [00:01:21.950]that we take from junior to senior year
- [00:01:26.620]has helped me a lot to getting that vision
- [00:01:30.640]of what college is.
- [00:01:31.801]Being able to connect with older first generation,
- [00:01:35.620]so like, the teachers.
- [00:01:36.960]They give me advice to help me with my first year
- [00:01:40.960]on campus.
- [00:01:41.920]I've been involved in, and I truly love
- [00:01:44.100]is my Mexican American Student Association,
- [00:01:46.560]just being a part of that,
- [00:01:47.600]but also gaining leadership, which is something
- [00:01:49.900]first generation students, we don't know where to start.
