- [00:00:03.500]Hello and welcome to Engineered,
- [00:00:05.110]the University of Nebraska College of Engineering podcast.
- [00:00:07.880]I'm Keith McGuffy.
- [00:00:09.120]Today, I sit down with three officers
- [00:00:11.250]of the UNO American Society of Civil Engineer student group,
- [00:00:14.460]President Joe Manning, Vice President Justin Holtman,
- [00:00:18.048]and Secretary Lizzie Humphis.
- [00:00:20.154]The group recently held a trebuchet
- [00:00:22.330]building competition for e-week,
- [00:00:24.380]encouraging students to use their design skills
- [00:00:26.570]in a friendly competition with medieval siege machines.
- [00:00:31.090]The trebuchets were judged based on
- [00:00:32.620]performance and aesthetic.
- [00:00:34.200]Tracy Owens, a project manager with
- [00:00:36.270]the Army Corp of Engineers and the Department
- [00:00:38.650]of Civil Engineering graduate, served as the judge.
- [00:00:41.529]So can you tell me, so you're the President I assume, Joe,
- [00:00:45.337]and Justin, you're the Vice President, is that correct?
- [00:00:47.750]And Lizzie, you're? Secretary.
- [00:00:49.469]Secretary, alright so we have
- [00:00:50.789]the big three of UNO ASCE here.
- [00:00:53.295]So can you tell me about UNO ASCE, what you guys do?
- [00:00:56.752]Well UNO's ASCE, as a student chapter,
- [00:00:59.670]we try and get meetings together with industry
- [00:01:02.420]to get students involved with other students,
- [00:01:05.020]faculty, and in the industry as well,
- [00:01:07.090]and then students come out and participate
- [00:01:09.620]in competitions like the concrete canoe and steel bridge
- [00:01:12.600]and go to conferences and just try out,
- [00:01:14.420]test them out with other schools.
- [00:01:16.450]Okay, so what's the concrete canoe?
- [00:01:18.373]The students would make a design for a canoe
- [00:01:22.550]and make the form out of concrete and try and,
- [00:01:24.850]it actually floats, so they can try and race it.
- [00:01:27.207]Wouldn't that, it's not too heavy to sink then?
- [00:01:29.609]They have to get the design correct so that it floats.
- [00:01:33.911]Awesome, okay, how did you all get involved with ASCE?
- [00:01:38.043]When I was a freshman, the former President came to me
- [00:01:41.000]and told me I should be in it and then I saw that
- [00:01:43.940]it was an opportunity to meet actual civil engineers
- [00:01:47.050]and get to know what field I'm going into
- [00:01:48.760]and I thought it was a great idea.
- [00:01:50.143]And Justin? I just went
- [00:01:53.260]to a meeting once and they said that they were
- [00:01:55.320]looking for officers for next year and that'll look good
- [00:01:58.740]on a resume, so I decided to run for office
- [00:02:01.610]and stick around and I'm glad I did.
- [00:02:03.627](laughing) So your first year,
- [00:02:04.460]you're already the Vice President?
- [00:02:05.460]Yeah, my first year. Wow, okay.
- [00:02:08.580]What year are you in school? It's my third at school,
- [00:02:11.870]it's my second in civil. I see.
- [00:02:14.040]What were you before civil? I was undecided,
- [00:02:16.120]so I dipped my toe in a couple different areas.
- [00:02:19.840]Why'd you decide on civil?
- [00:02:21.582]It was more like what I wanted to do.
- [00:02:24.140]It was more towards my strengths and some other things
- [00:02:27.750]and it kept me involved more than
- [00:02:29.639]aviation or criminal justice.
- [00:02:32.119]Are you focusing on one specific area
- [00:02:34.700]of civil engineering? Not right now.
- [00:02:37.170]Eventually I do want to get into aerospace engineering.
- [00:02:42.410]I met a guy at one of our conferences we went to,
- [00:02:45.251]he works at Boeing, so I've been contacting him
- [00:02:48.240]to see what he does, how it goes up there and
- [00:02:51.523]what the next steps would be. Awesome, alright.
- [00:02:54.960]And Lizzie, how'd you get involved with ASCE?
- [00:02:57.620]They came to my introductory civil class
- [00:03:00.470]and talked about it, so then I started going to meetings
- [00:03:02.790]and I wanted to get more involved,
- [00:03:03.623]so I just ran for Secretary. What year are you in school?
- [00:03:06.120]I'm a freshman. Oh wow, cool.
- [00:03:07.790]So you're a freshman and already Secretary
- [00:03:09.340]of a student organization, that's awesome.
- [00:03:11.130]Why'd you choose civil engineering?
- [00:03:13.550]My mom's friend kinda tried to convince me
- [00:03:16.219]to do it my whole life and then I finally was like,
- [00:03:19.727]"I'll see how it goes." Awesome, how about you, Joe?
- [00:03:22.230]We didn't talk about how you got into civil engineering.
- [00:03:25.280]Well, I was always, I really liked
- [00:03:27.980]science and math in high school
- [00:03:29.330]and I've always been outdoors
- [00:03:30.650]and love nature and animals and everything.
- [00:03:34.020]I attended open house at PKI my junior year
- [00:03:37.750]and saw what civil engineers can do
- [00:03:40.100]and I thought that'd be the perfect way
- [00:03:41.650]to combine what I like to do outside of school
- [00:03:43.460]with the skills that I had. Awesome.
- [00:03:46.259]So it's e-week right now and you guys
- [00:03:49.250]just held a trebuchet competition, correct?
- [00:03:51.378]How'd it go? Surprisingly well.
- [00:03:54.100]Yeah, and so, for this competition,
- [00:03:55.750]you provided popsicle sticks and some glue
- [00:03:58.010]and people built a medieval siege machine?
- [00:04:00.701]Well, a mini version of it, not the full size.
- [00:04:03.206](laughing)
- [00:04:04.910]Where'd you guys come up with that idea?
- [00:04:06.370]So, Joe sent out a text to us saying,
- [00:04:09.397]"Hey, we got a spot in e-week, we need some ideas."
- [00:04:11.140]And I was like, "Trebuchet competition."
- [00:04:14.140]'Cause I'm part of SAME, too,
- [00:04:15.970]I'm an officer over there as well,
- [00:04:17.990]Society of American Military Engineers,
- [00:04:19.830]I'm their Secretary and one of my friends over there,
- [00:04:22.860]his name's Sam, he says he's always
- [00:04:24.650]been interested in doing it, but they always
- [00:04:26.730]doing something different for e-week,
- [00:04:27.980]so I was like, this is perfect, trebuchet competition.
- [00:04:32.400]Awesome, for this competition, the trebuchet competition,
- [00:04:35.240]you had someone from the Army Corp of Engineers of Omaha,
- [00:04:38.554]how did you guys make that contact?
- [00:04:41.120]Well, the Army Corp of Engineers
- [00:04:42.860]was one of the diamond sponsors for e-week,
- [00:04:44.730]so NESC was kind of the big organization
- [00:04:48.040]that helped organize e-week,
- [00:04:49.500]that's the Nebraska Engineering Student Council,
- [00:04:52.060]and they got all the sponsors and everything
- [00:04:54.320]and they just gave us a link to the judge
- [00:04:57.970]to come and come to the competition.
- [00:04:59.810]How do you guys judge the trebuchet competition?
- [00:05:01.760]Well, we send their judge off functionality,
- [00:05:04.070]so if, basically how far they can throw things
- [00:05:07.980]and also aesthetics, if it looked neat and cool
- [00:05:11.050]and had a good look to it.
- [00:05:12.650]Awesome, and how does this relate
- [00:05:14.240]specifically to civil engineering?
- [00:05:16.140]You gotta work on designs, see what holds up the best,
- [00:05:20.060]what's the best, how to make things the most functional
- [00:05:23.850]with the tools that you have. What kind of competitions
- [00:05:27.120]have you guys held in the past for e-week?
- [00:05:29.090]That I recall, I don't think ASCE
- [00:05:30.610]has done any e-week events in the past couple years.
- [00:05:32.998]This is our first time back in e-week.
- [00:05:35.160]Awesome, can you tell me about
- [00:05:36.650]any other events you guys have coming up?
- [00:05:38.510]Well, March 15th we have our chapter meeting.
- [00:05:41.717]We're gonna have a representative
- [00:05:43.010]from Benesch and Company in Common C
- [00:05:44.660]and then in April, we're gonna be partnering
- [00:05:47.120]with the state ASCE section to hold
- [00:05:48.920]their April transportation meeting
- [00:05:51.517]and we're planning on having a social
- [00:05:52.980]or service event in April coming up.
- [00:05:54.620]We haven't finalized it yet, but we're working on it.
- [00:05:57.140]Are all those events taking place at PKI?
- [00:05:59.205]Our chapter meetings are at PKI,
- [00:06:01.820]but the state section meeting will be
- [00:06:03.870]possibly at Anthony's Steakhouse or another restaurant.
- [00:06:06.110]Also we have a couple of our ASCE members
- [00:06:10.139]judging the trust busting competition this weekend.
- [00:06:13.230]It's a high school event where the high schoolers
- [00:06:15.703]design a trust, they think theirs is the strongest,
- [00:06:19.150]so they come to PKI on Saturday
- [00:06:22.900]and a couple of us judge the...
- [00:06:27.760]I'm sorry, can you explain what the trust is to me?
- [00:06:29.660]It's like a structure that...
- [00:06:31.637]It's like a support? It's like a support.
- [00:06:33.950]The beams are basically, a trust is like,
- [00:06:36.120]its member's connected in different shapes
- [00:06:38.853]to provide the most support.
- [00:06:39.810]So like, most floors in this hall support the building,
- [00:06:43.630]they're typically trusts and bridges as well.
- [00:06:46.253]What do the high schoolers use to build this?
- [00:06:48.606]I'm not exactly sure.
- [00:06:51.470]This is my first time judging it.
- [00:06:53.659]They're putting it on, you guys are just judging it?
- [00:06:56.480]Yeah, so I'm not sure what exactly it is.
- [00:06:58.642]Thank you all for your time.
- [00:07:00.522](soft music)
- [00:07:02.379]Congratulations to Ben Engleman and Hunter Rouch.
- [00:07:05.900]Their trebuchet called Fire Wood took home first place.
- [00:07:11.000]Thank you for listening to Engineered,
