The University of Nebraska-Lincoln will host the 2018 National Personal Finance Challenge in May.

[00:00:06.008]For the first time in it's eight year history,
[00:00:08.410]the Personal Finance Challenge Competition,
[00:00:11.050]National Competition, will take place in Lincoln, Nebraska.
[00:00:14.560]It will be May 11th, at the college
[00:00:16.740]of business administration,
[00:00:17.704]the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus,
[00:00:20.480]which is right here.
[00:00:22.116]So students from high schools all across the country
[00:00:25.270]will travel to Lincoln for this event.
[00:00:26.947]In the past this event's been held
[00:00:29.155]in major metropolitan areas
[00:00:31.040]such as St. Louis and Kansas City,
[00:00:33.021]so we're very pleased to have it here in Lincoln
[00:00:35.580]at the College of Business this year.
[00:00:38.830]At the national competition,
[00:00:40.300]each team will be provided a detailed,
[00:00:42.330]fictitious family scenario.
[00:00:43.914]The scenario included information such as family income,
[00:00:47.002]number of children-along with their ages,
[00:00:49.492]asset and debt information, and financial goals.
[00:00:52.834]Based on the scenario, teams will have two hours
[00:00:55.319]to put together a financial plan and presentation.
[00:00:59.430]Teams will present their prepared plan
[00:01:01.440]to a panel of judges in one of three presentation rooms.
[00:01:05.050]The judges from each room will then unanimously select
[00:01:08.720]one team to advance to the finals.
[00:01:11.038]Then, vying for the title of national champions,
[00:01:14.770]these three teams will present in front of all
[00:01:16.870]of the competitors and our elite panel of judges.
[00:01:19.892]So two of our four elite judges are in this room,
[00:01:22.265]Don Stenberg is one, and then Kirk Kellner
[00:01:25.040]from Wells Fargo will also be an elite judge.
[00:01:28.460]The elite judges will determine the rankings
[00:01:30.890]and we will crown our national champions
[00:01:33.090]and award them their very significant
[00:01:34.767]NEST 529 plan scholarships.
[00:01:38.150]Yeah, we have a mission to help people succeed
[00:01:40.350]financially, but really our mission's to help people succeed
[00:01:43.090]in life, and we think it's so important
[00:01:45.590]to have the financial knowledge, financial literacy,
[00:01:47.748]and financial independence to be successful in life.
[00:01:51.530]So, it's two of the major reasons
[00:01:53.120]why we're supporting this competition,
[00:01:55.010]because it's not just about the young people
[00:01:56.498]that'll be here, but it's all the ones
[00:01:58.820]that are competing to get here,
[00:02:00.370]that are learning everyday about how important finances are.
[00:02:03.575]Certainly bringing high school students to campuses
[00:02:07.522]is always an opportunity to recruit,
[00:02:10.414]and when you have a brand new facility
[00:02:13.950]that was very graciously provided by private support,
[00:02:18.910]it's a game changer for us, and like I said, the fact
[00:02:22.224]that we can actually house it here physically
[00:02:26.590]gives us an opportunity to interact with students
[00:02:30.450]and try to get them to put Nebraska on their radar,
[00:02:33.783]and I think that's a positive thing for the state.
