- [00:00:12.430]So in a nutshell, a number of accelerometers,
- [00:00:15.030]or vibration sensors,
- [00:00:16.610]were placed in a number of surrounding buildings
- [00:00:19.850]as well as on the ground in the free field
- [00:00:22.080]during the collapse of the Cather Impound dormitories.
- [00:00:25.430]Now, this data that we've collected during this implosion
- [00:00:28.940]was particularly important,
- [00:00:30.540]because it can help us to better understand
- [00:00:33.200]how the response of one building
- [00:00:35.600]during an extreme event,
- [00:00:37.110]such as an earthquake,
- [00:00:38.360]can impact all of the surrounding structures.
- [00:00:41.490]One particularly interesting outcome so far
- [00:00:44.150]has been that the vibration
- [00:00:45.810]or the excitation
- [00:00:47.150]at all of the adjacent structures
- [00:00:49.070]in the vicinity
- [00:00:50.480]was that about half of the maximum acceleration
- [00:00:54.320]that was seen
- [00:00:55.153]was due to the actual blast sequence,
- [00:00:57.170]and by the blast sequence,
- [00:00:58.100]we mean the explosion of the individual columns
- [00:01:00.330]in Cather Impound.
- [00:01:01.640]Whereas the actual collapse of the structures
- [00:01:03.940]was only about twice that amplitude.
- [00:01:06.920]This type of a project
- [00:01:07.860]was only possible through a lot of coordination
- [00:01:10.930]and collaboration with university housing,
- [00:01:13.671]as well as with the actual demolition contractors.
- [00:01:16.750]In addition, the support at the college level
- [00:01:18.770]is particularly important,
- [00:01:20.550]as they always wanted to encourage us
- [00:01:22.650]to do these types of research
- [00:01:24.450]and to give us the freedom
- [00:01:25.690]to collect this type of data.
- [00:01:27.820](cheering and clapping)
