- [00:00:02.669]We're at half-time, Matt Coatney with you
- [00:00:03.980]and we are honored to have Chancellor Ronnie Green
- [00:00:06.380]with us at half-time of tonight's game.
- [00:00:08.770]You know, Chancellor, last week you recognized four
- [00:00:10.589]University of Nebraska-Lincoln students who earned
- [00:00:13.400]a place in an exciting new program that has the potential
- [00:00:16.920]to create just exciting outreach opportunities
- [00:00:19.010]for the state, what can you tell us about that?
- [00:00:20.970]Well Matt, you know, we're really proud of all the
- [00:00:23.700]26,000 students that we have at the
- [00:00:25.710]University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:00:27.060]and about a week ago, out at our makerspace at
- [00:00:30.340]Nebraska Innovation campus, our makers studio,
- [00:00:32.588]we were able to kinda launch four of those students off
- [00:00:37.410]on a new fellowship opportunity that's funded jointly
- [00:00:40.420]by a group called Beyond School Bells.
- [00:00:43.350]It's involved in creating after-school experiences
- [00:00:46.410]for students in the school system.
- [00:00:48.350]Particularly in more disadvantaged schools
- [00:00:51.520]or in disadvantaged areas.
- [00:00:53.350]And they've put up now four innovation fellowships
- [00:00:58.709]for four of our undergraduate students.
- [00:01:01.150]To work together as a team through
- [00:01:03.050]Nebraska Innovation studio, the makerspace there
- [00:01:05.870]at Innovation Campus, to put together some new curriculum
- [00:01:09.280]for them and to create some new experiences
- [00:01:11.984]in a mobile trailer kind of lab that goes to these schools
- [00:01:17.312]and after school.
- [00:01:18.850]So very exciting to recognize these four
- [00:01:21.180]and kinda outstanding upcoming students to be part of this
- [00:01:23.830]first Innovation Fellows team.
- [00:01:26.070]Well it sounds like a really special opportunity
- [00:01:28.300]for the state and you were there to congratulate
- [00:01:30.700]the four university students.
- [00:01:32.290]How excited are they to be part of this inaugural quest?
- [00:01:35.550]Well, like I said, it's the very first one
- [00:01:37.060]so it's an inaugural, kind of group of these
- [00:01:41.050]Innovation Fellows and these four students,
- [00:01:43.660]in particular, Alison Cloet who is a sophomore,
- [00:01:46.636]junior level fashion design major.
- [00:01:50.090]She's from Sutton, Nebraska, we lived there
- [00:01:51.820]for about 10 years of our life.
- [00:01:53.980]She's a classmate of our youngest daughter, 4-H,
- [00:01:57.794]a lot of background in creating and making things
- [00:02:00.471]so Alison's part of that group.
- [00:02:02.560]Caleb Kowalski, sophomore, mechanical engineering major.
- [00:02:05.783]Mickey Tran, a sophomore in computer science
- [00:02:10.310]from here in Lincoln.
- [00:02:11.540]And Dana Hoppe, a sophomore in computer science
- [00:02:14.030]and art major.
- [00:02:14.863]So they're gonna be this team,
- [00:02:16.978]I asked them when I was visiting with them
- [00:02:19.767]in the awards ceremony,
- [00:02:21.860]I said, how are you gonna go about this?
- [00:02:23.360]They said we'll have an empty slate, they've told us that
- [00:02:26.110]we're to kind of create what we want this after school
- [00:02:29.600]experience to be for these students.
- [00:02:31.700]About how to make things, how to grow and make things.
- [00:02:35.150]So they're gonna start working this week,
- [00:02:38.340]you know, they're actually at work now
- [00:02:40.340]as these Innovation Fellows.
- [00:02:42.180]Being provided a $5,000 fellowship.
- [00:02:44.710]Big deal to them.
- [00:02:47.200]As they move forward and so I'm gonna be really to come back
- [00:02:50.850]at the end of the semester and see what they've created
- [00:02:53.170]for Beyond School Bells.
- [00:02:54.310]Oh my goodness, sounds like a great great thing.
- [00:02:57.960]Well let's shift gears for a minute.
- [00:02:59.710]The Nebraska Men's and Women's basketball teams aren't the
- [00:03:02.380]only ones delivering great performances in Lincoln.
- [00:03:05.720]Last week, one of the world's biggest names in ballet,
- [00:03:08.550]Misty Copeland, performed on campus in front of a sold-out
- [00:03:11.092]audience at the Lied's Center.
- [00:03:13.570]What does that say about the arts on campus here in Lincoln?
- [00:03:17.400]Well you know, a lot of people take for granted, I think,
- [00:03:21.486]that we have this world-class performance venue
- [00:03:26.200]in the Lied's Center for the Performing Arts
- [00:03:28.110]on our campus.
- [00:03:29.590]I was a graduate student here in the 1980's
- [00:03:32.271]when the Lied's Center was being built.
- [00:03:33.980]And I remember thinking as a person interested
- [00:03:35.753]in music myself, how cool is that.
- [00:03:38.850]That here in Lincoln, Nebraska, we're gonna have
- [00:03:41.300]one of the world's leading performance venues
- [00:03:43.490]and it's lived up to that expectation
- [00:03:45.551]during all the years since.
- [00:03:47.440]And this is a big deal, last Friday night,
- [00:03:49.536]sold-out performance with the American Ballet Theater.
- [00:03:53.849]Misty Copeland is one of the premier ballerinas
- [00:03:57.510]in the world, grew up in the Kansas City area,
- [00:04:00.628]has an amazing story of her own, how she overcame
- [00:04:04.435]a lot of adversity and difficulty to rise to prominence
- [00:04:08.760]as one of the great ballerinas of our time.
- [00:04:12.267]Backed by the St. Louis Philharmonic Orchestra
- [00:04:15.800]as the opening performance.
- [00:04:17.890]This was actually the opening performance
- [00:04:19.890]of American Ballet Theater's production of Firebird.
- [00:04:23.190]And just to have that on this stage here
- [00:04:25.510]I think the Lied's Center Bill Stephan, our director there,
- [00:04:28.470]talked about how this was a big deal even for the Lied,
- [00:04:32.780]it was a big deal to have someone of Misty's talent
- [00:04:35.766]here in that kind of setting
- [00:04:37.580]and it was just abuzz.
- [00:04:38.650]To be there, Jane and I were lucky to be there
- [00:04:40.942]and hosted a lot of guests and it was an amazing,
- [00:04:45.110]absolutely amazing performance.
- [00:04:46.800]So thinking about bringing that kind of talent to Lincoln
- [00:04:50.720]all of the time, I should add, Misty actually earlier
- [00:04:55.890]in the week, on Wednesday night, was part of the
- [00:04:58.370]E.N. Thompson Forum and visited with our students
- [00:05:00.867]and talked about her own life story in that way.
- [00:05:05.120]So bringing people like her to Lincoln,
- [00:05:07.703]the Lied's Center is a big deal for us
- [00:05:10.300]and we're very very very proud of that.
- [00:05:12.770]Me and my family, we love the Lied Center.
- [00:05:14.440]Chancellor Green, always a pleasure to talk to you.
- [00:05:16.730]Thank you.
- [00:05:17.760]Go Big Red, let's beat Indiana.
- [00:05:20.020]Alright, that's Chancellor Ronnie Green,
- [00:05:21.900]Matt Coatney with you.
- [00:05:23.330]We're at the half, Nebraska and Indiana.
- [00:05:25.730]We'll have more half-time activities in a few moments.
