- [00:00:19.090]men's and women's success so far this year.
- [00:00:21.900]You're gonna talk about some other
- [00:00:22.900]successes that have been going on
- [00:00:24.500]at the university this semester, what do you have for us?
- [00:00:26.790]Well, Greg, it's great to be here
- [00:00:28.430]tonight and to be kind of celebrating this season,
- [00:00:31.330]with our men's team and our women's team also doing great.
- [00:00:35.060]It's been great to see that this year.
- [00:00:36.870]And so, big game tonight against Maryland.
- [00:00:39.810]It's just that, you know, you better
- [00:00:40.690]get out and buy all your heart shaped stuff tomorrow.
- [00:00:43.220]But, we do have a lot be thankful for at the university.
- [00:00:48.080]Everyday, things happen that impress, you know, me.
- [00:00:52.050]I hear about them, I hear about the success
- [00:00:54.310]that our faculty and our student
- [00:00:55.810]and our alums are having here locally and around the world.
- [00:00:59.230]And, you know, just in recent times,
- [00:01:01.262]in the last week or so our speech and debate team
- [00:01:04.860]won their seventh consecutive Big Ten title late in January.
- [00:01:09.740]So big deal for them, continue to have strong excellence.
- [00:01:13.370]They're in our Communication Studies program
- [00:01:15.520]and Speech and Debate, led by senior co-captain
- [00:01:18.580]Mattison Merritt, from here in Lincoln,
- [00:01:21.070]who was named the top individual
- [00:01:22.960]in the all conference tournament, so big deal
- [00:01:25.525]on a repeated level for our speech and debate students.
- [00:01:30.560]Graduate students, we have a group that has been working
- [00:01:34.789]through a course that they're taking on improving
- [00:01:38.830]high schools and they worked very closely
- [00:01:41.740]with LHS here in Lincoln, Lincoln High School,
- [00:01:45.300]to write reports about them, and recently,
- [00:01:49.530]Lincoln High has been recognized
- [00:01:51.820]as of one eight "Gold Level" schools of opportunity
- [00:01:54.990]in the US, just announced here in Lincoln
- [00:01:57.070]a few weeks for Lincoln High, so things like that
- [00:02:00.660]happening on our student's side and our faculty,
- [00:02:02.860]Amanda Ramer-Tait, one of our professors
- [00:02:04.897]in Food Science and Technology in our Food Innovation Center
- [00:02:08.240]out at Nebraska Innovation Campus,
- [00:02:10.530]just recently, uncovered clues to the cause of
- [00:02:13.660]Inflammatory Bowel disease, an affliction that affects
- [00:02:17.460]a lot of people around the world.
- [00:02:20.550]And Lindsey Wezolon, who is a research associate
- [00:02:24.810]with the Nebraska Cooperative Fish
- [00:02:26.270]and Wildlife research co-op unit,
- [00:02:28.130]we call it in our school of natural resources,
- [00:02:30.710]helped to develop a website based simulator
- [00:02:34.920]for pheasant habitat to help the game and parks commission,
- [00:02:38.720]here in our state, which we're partners with through
- [00:02:41.070]the university and through our natural resources efforts
- [00:02:43.870]with land management to improve pheasant habitats.
- [00:02:46.460]So yeah, faculty are always doing things like that
- [00:02:49.490]that have a real world impact, day to day.
- [00:02:52.650]Just a few of the recent highlights
- [00:02:54.550]that we're proud of at the university.
- [00:02:56.280]Very good, I know this is not going
- [00:02:57.920]unnoticed, a lot of third party rankings are out there
- [00:03:00.966]reveling about the university and the things it does.
- [00:03:03.860]You got some more of those that
- [00:03:04.960]have come down the pike here recently, what can you tell us?
- [00:03:07.040]Well, you know, we like to say that
- [00:03:09.730]we're in the middle of everywhere and everything
- [00:03:11.280]here at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:03:13.170]and we are, but we're recognized in lots of ways.
- [00:03:17.110]In various ranking criteria for higher education,
- [00:03:20.285]in the US and abroad, world certainly
- [00:03:23.470]takes notice of us on a daily basis.
- [00:03:25.850]Our online education programs, recently recognized by
- [00:03:29.670]US news and reports "2018 best online programs"
- [00:03:34.030]listing in January, very proud of that.
- [00:03:36.600]Our online Bachelor of Science in Applied Science
- [00:03:39.770]and our Bachelor's in Early Childhood Education
- [00:03:42.640]in a Mobile Society ranked in the top ten percent
- [00:03:45.350]of all programs, like that, here in the US and abroad.
- [00:03:50.000]We've ranked second in the Big Ten for both
- [00:03:52.430]our online Master of Business Administration MBA
- [00:03:56.230]and our online graduate education programs
- [00:03:58.480]for teachers and school administrators.
- [00:04:01.040]So, very proud of those kind of rankings
- [00:04:03.040]for our curricular offerings, and then, once again
- [00:04:06.650]we've been recognized recently for providing
- [00:04:09.540]a top notch general, overall educationism institution,
- [00:04:13.380]as a great value by both Kiplinger's
- [00:04:15.810]and by the Princeton Review, which are used by students
- [00:04:18.920]as they look at universities, thinking about
- [00:04:21.560]where they will pursue their education.
- [00:04:23.370]So, world's taken notice of us and they should.
- [00:04:27.060]Great momentum here in early 2018
- [00:04:29.120]and I know you're not gonna have any plans
- [00:04:31.040]to slow this down, you want to keep it rolling.
- [00:04:32.730]That's absolutely right.
- [00:04:33.840]You know, we talk about how we're
- [00:04:35.975]fighting a few budget woes.
- [00:04:38.590]I think people know that out their, the state is dealing
- [00:04:41.700]with some shortfalls in revenue and we're playing
- [00:04:44.210]our part as a partner in that,
- [00:04:45.709]but that's not slowing us down.
- [00:04:47.340]I mean, we are continuing to grow our enrollment,
- [00:04:50.160]just saw our Spring numbers up again
- [00:04:52.220]for the spring semester, our fall numbers are looking great
- [00:04:56.040]for a significant increase, we believe, in enrollment
- [00:04:59.733]for the flagship campus and we're all guns out, blazing,
- [00:05:04.578]moving forward to not arrest any of our momentum,
- [00:05:08.450]here at the states flagship land-grant university.
- [00:05:10.950]Fantastic. Thank you so much for sharing.
- [00:05:12.470]You bet. Go Big Red!
- [00:05:13.860]More halftime, coming up next.
