- [00:00:02.213]Welcome back inside our Huskers Sports Network studios.
- [00:00:03.829]Greg Sharp, joined by the University of Nebraska Lincoln
- [00:00:06.232]Chancellor Ronny Green and a very special guest,
- [00:00:09.198]who's one of Nebraska's all-time greats, Karen Jennings.
- [00:00:11.642]She was the winner of the Margaret Wade Trophy
- [00:00:13.916]when she played for the Huskers.
- [00:00:15.375]And Chancellor I know you like to highlight some alums
- [00:00:17.830]who had prominent careers at Nebraska
- [00:00:20.669]and then have gone on and done some wonderful things
- [00:00:22.548]afterwards.
- [00:00:23.381]And obviously Karen Jennings fits that to a bill.
- [00:00:25.168]Oh, she sure does Greg.
- [00:00:27.153]You know our women are having a great season this year.
- [00:00:29.899]It's great to see the success they're having on the court
- [00:00:32.451]and Coach Williams in her second season with us
- [00:00:35.089]couldn't be happier about the way things are going
- [00:00:37.393]and great to have Karen with us today.
- [00:00:39.674]You know we prepare students from our university
- [00:00:42.424]to go on to be great successes after the great success
- [00:00:45.891]they've had as students on our campus,
- [00:00:48.150]and Karen certainly fits that bill.
- [00:00:49.943]You know you spoke to her athletic prowess as a member of
- [00:00:53.663]the team here in the late '80s and early '90s.
- [00:00:56.781]Came to us from across the river a little bit in Iowa
- [00:00:59.841]and we were happy to welcome her into the state
- [00:01:02.352]right? (others laugh)
- [00:01:03.684]And she's chosen to stay here with us,
- [00:01:05.437]which we're also happy about.
- [00:01:07.318]Excelled on the court like few others
- [00:01:09.419]have in our program historically,
- [00:01:11.822]but also was a top student, you know
- [00:01:13.506]we're proud of that 330 Academic All-Americans
- [00:01:15.925]that we have in Husker Athletics.
- [00:01:18.196]I was talking over the weekend about
- [00:01:21.209]how, you know, that's 75 more than Notre Dame has
- [00:01:24.512]and 117 more than Stanford has.
- [00:01:27.551]We're pretty proud of that, and Karen was one
- [00:01:29.783]of those Academic All-Americans.
- [00:01:32.053]Member of the Mortar Board Honorary
- [00:01:34.114]Senior Society on campus.
- [00:01:36.285]My wife tells me that's a big deal,
- [00:01:37.968]she made it into that, you know so it's...
- [00:01:40.875]And then she's gone on through her career,
- [00:01:43.614]earned a Master's degree from UNMC.
- [00:01:45.962]Worked in physical therapy and then
- [00:01:48.412]pivoted into real estate.
- [00:01:50.135]And has become one of the top realtors in the Omaha area.
- [00:01:54.118]So just an example story and a role model for our students
- [00:01:57.976]and so great to have Karen here back on campus with us
- [00:02:00.961]tonight for the game.
- [00:02:02.045]Absolutely, Karen always great to see you.
- [00:02:03.621]Before we get into kinda what you're doing now,
- [00:02:05.211]I just want your thoughts on this Husker team.
- [00:02:06.840]What a great turnaround this is for Coach Williams
- [00:02:08.810]here in year 2, what have you seen?
- [00:02:10.622]Oh, I think that the team has a lot of cohesiveness.
- [00:02:13.801]I think the leadership at the point is
- [00:02:16.142]definitely being demonstrated game in and game out.
- [00:02:18.743]I also see that they...a lot of unselfish play.
- [00:02:21.802]We've got...we also brought in a couple of great
- [00:02:24.384]newcomers with Kate Cain.
- [00:02:25.836]She's a 6'5" girl that's a true freshman.
- [00:02:28.838]She's averaging about 10 points a game.
- [00:02:30.792]But she's consistently there game in and game...
- [00:02:33.870]You know, she has her head in the game
- [00:02:36.303]and she definitely helps us defensively
- [00:02:38.971]'cause she clogs up the middle
- [00:02:40.900]and she's able to finish her shots.
- [00:02:43.188]I love watching Taylor Kissinger come...
- [00:02:46.094]she's really come along.
- [00:02:47.447]I know she was hurt earlier in the season,
- [00:02:48.749]but she knows what to do with the ball.
- [00:02:50.490]She's a prolific scorer and I think she's gonna
- [00:02:52.510]do some great things.
- [00:02:53.532]Plus we have the stability of Maddie Simon
- [00:02:55.812]in that power forward/small forward position.
- [00:02:59.807]She's a great rebounder, she's a great team player.
- [00:03:03.267]And then the outside shooters.
- [00:03:04.904]They're, ya know Hannah's doing a great job.
- [00:03:08.889]Nicea, she's a slasher.
- [00:03:10.589]She's got some great athleticism, so...
- [00:03:13.223]I'm really enjoying the team this year.
- [00:03:16.190]Just love coach Williams and the whole staff.
- [00:03:19.992]They're just a great group.
- [00:03:22.511]We have a lot of young folks who listen to us
- [00:03:24.968]here for the game broadcasts and you deal with
- [00:03:28.096]a lot of young student athletes who are
- [00:03:30.517]going through their high school days.
- [00:03:32.352]What message do you try to get across to them about
- [00:03:34.691]being good athletes, being good student athletes?
- [00:03:37.965]Well, you have to always remember that
- [00:03:40.139]student is the most important thing.
- [00:03:42.371]I do do some coaching with seventh graders,
- [00:03:46.487]and if a parent tells me that they can't make it
- [00:03:49.209]because they're studying for a test,
- [00:03:50.549]school always comes first.
- [00:03:52.124]And that's the most important thing,
- [00:03:53.511]because at the end of the day,
- [00:03:54.630]there's a very small percentage of female athletes
- [00:03:58.544]that are gonna play outside of University of Nebraska
- [00:04:00.831]so that's one of the reasons why I came to
- [00:04:03.095]The University of Nebraska was because
- [00:04:04.802]their academic prowess.
- [00:04:06.553]The Hewit Academic Success Center is
- [00:04:09.324]by far the top in the entire country.
- [00:04:12.602]And if I wouldn't have had the support with
- [00:04:14.891]Dennis LeBlock, Keith Zimmer,
- [00:04:18.060]those two, just to point those two out,
- [00:04:21.160]they are just amazing at what they do.
- [00:04:23.325]And when I needed help with Chemistry,
- [00:04:24.899]I needed help with Physics, I needed help with
- [00:04:27.244]Human Physiology, we were able to get a little bit of
- [00:04:30.475]extra help with the tutor system.
- [00:04:31.859]But by far that's the most important thing,
- [00:04:34.179]and that was always my number one focus at Nebraska.
- [00:04:36.619]I loved playing basketball, but I knew that my degree
- [00:04:42.203]and the academic part was what was gonna take me
- [00:04:44.958]throughout my entire life.
- [00:04:46.892]You get back to Lincoln and speak to groups a lot.
- [00:04:49.505]Why is that important to you to kinda give back
- [00:04:51.311]to the university?
- [00:04:52.180]Oh my gosh, when I came to Nebraska,
- [00:04:54.879]the entire state embraced me,
- [00:04:57.221]and I felt like I had that support.
- [00:04:59.328]And...but it's the least thing I can do to help.
- [00:05:04.329]Is just to go out and show my support to the Huskers
- [00:05:06.903]and to speak on behalf on the state of excellence
- [00:05:09.916]that is exhibited at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:05:12.423]Wonderful.
- [00:05:13.347]Again Chancellor, Karen a great example of somebody
- [00:05:15.587]who's gone on and done great things and honestly
- [00:05:17.549]keeping the university in mind you gotta love hearing about
- [00:05:19.598]how studies are so important to these student athletes.
- [00:05:22.385]Oh, absolutely and again Karen thanks
- [00:05:24.502]for being here tonight with us
- [00:05:26.037]and exhibiting the quality of our athletics program,
- [00:05:30.889]the ongoing quality of Husker athletics.
- [00:05:32.913]But the quality of the university.
- [00:05:34.631]15 of our 20 graduates land in Nebraska.
- [00:05:38.314]And you know, fortunately we enticed Karen
- [00:05:41.261]to land in Nebraska too and be part of us as well.
- [00:05:44.398]So, great to be here, go Big Red, Beat the Badgers.
- [00:05:47.300]Great, wonderful to see you Karen and Chancellor,
- [00:05:49.646]here at halftime, more second half coming up next.
