- [00:00:04.230]My name is Christina Yao, and I'm an assistant professor
- [00:00:06.930]in the Department of Educational Administration,
- [00:00:09.330]and in the middle of my fourth year.
- [00:00:11.940]In our department we have a P-12 administration side,
- [00:00:14.840]and then more the higher ed side,
- [00:00:16.080]so I definitely fall in the higher ed side.
- [00:00:17.560]My research is centered on student learning and engagement,
- [00:00:20.350]operationalized by three connected areas including:
- [00:00:23.720]international education, teaching and learning,
- [00:00:26.380]and the study of graduate students.

- [00:00:30.670]The very first time I've ever stepped foot in this state,
- [00:00:33.770]was when I came here to do my interview,
- [00:00:36.680]and Dr. Kathy Wesley was actually the person
- [00:00:38.520]who picked me up at the airport,
- [00:00:39.960]and I said to her, I go,
- [00:00:40.900]"Oh, I don't know what I was thinking.
- [00:00:42.920]I was thinking like, tumbleweed and not a lot of buildings
- [00:00:45.590]and all this stuff, but it's a real city,"
- [00:00:46.840]and so, obviously I had some preconceived notions
- [00:00:49.240]about what the state was going to be,
- [00:00:50.270]but that was my first visit,
- [00:00:51.820]and I am very happy to be here now.

- [00:00:55.270]Especially from teaching classes,
- [00:00:56.810]primarily to master's students,
- [00:00:58.490]is to make sure there's a lot of consideration
- [00:01:01.430]and reflection of, "Alright, you're learning this,
- [00:01:04.000]but what does it mean in your professional life?"
- [00:01:05.587](upbeat techno music)
- [00:01:07.240]I can honestly say that online teaching
- [00:01:10.380]had made me a better teacher.
- [00:01:11.680]I think people have the misconception out there
- [00:01:13.420]that online teacher is very, very easy, right?
- [00:01:15.970]Like, you don't have to be in a physical classroom,
- [00:01:18.310]it's pretty flexible,
- [00:01:20.050]it doesn't take a lot of energy or preparation,
- [00:01:22.080]or you don't to sit up in the front
- [00:01:23.180]of a classroom and preform,
- [00:01:25.120]but the reality of what we know about online teaching,
- [00:01:26.930]people who've engaged in whether taking a class
- [00:01:29.210]or teaching a class, is that it's actually
- [00:01:31.140]just as much work and a different type of work.
- [00:01:33.810]We are a community of learners,
- [00:01:35.220]in that we have to work together,
- [00:01:36.790]and we have to learn how to do group projects,
- [00:01:38.660]we have to learn how to have productive discussions
- [00:01:41.260]on the discussion board
- [00:01:42.240]So, what are things that we can do to make sure
- [00:01:44.070]that people feel like they're part of the community?
- [00:01:45.845](upbeat techno music)
- [00:01:48.140]I think that's one of the perks
- [00:01:49.290]of being in the department here,
- [00:01:51.780]is that our faculty are very committed and engaged
- [00:01:54.680]in the teaching process,
- [00:01:55.880]and also in the advising process and everything, too.
- [00:01:58.430]One of the best things about our department
- [00:02:00.130]is really the people.
- [00:02:01.630]We're very committed to student success,
- [00:02:03.370]and to training some of the best
- [00:02:05.390]educational leaders out there.
