- [00:00:04.490]My name's Dr. Elvira Abrica
- [00:00:07.420]and I joined the department in fall 2016.
- [00:00:10.820]I am an assistant professor and I teach in
- [00:00:13.500]the Educational Leadership and Higher Education program.
- [00:00:16.361](upbeat music)
- [00:00:18.450]My research is focused on immigrant, migrant,
- [00:00:21.360]and multicultural populations in post-secondary education.
- [00:00:25.090]I look at underserved populations,
- [00:00:27.660]particularly Latino students,
- [00:00:29.690]across different institutional contexts.
- [00:00:32.330]I like to focus my research specifically on STEM,
- [00:00:35.920]science, technology, engineering, and math,
- [00:00:38.450]as well as community college contexts.
- [00:00:40.804](upbeat music)
- [00:00:43.050]I came to Nebraska because I could feel
- [00:00:45.050]how excited everyone was about their research.
- [00:00:48.340]I could feel the department changing
- [00:00:50.890]and the college changing and the state of Nebraska changing.
- [00:00:55.510]In the state of Nebraska,
- [00:00:56.570]there's such a huge growth of the Latino population
- [00:00:59.760]and I wanted to come and be a leader
- [00:01:02.414]for the Latino community here in Nebraska.
- [00:01:04.873](upbeat music)
- [00:01:06.970]This is a global society that we live in
- [00:01:08.690]and so it's super important for people to be able to
- [00:01:11.200]access information anywhere at anytime.
- [00:01:13.840]And I think that's just the world that we live in now,
- [00:01:16.140]where information has to be available 24/7.
- [00:01:19.180]It's great, because a lot of our students
- [00:01:20.930]are working full-time or they need to access information
- [00:01:24.410]outside of the regular offerings
- [00:01:26.470]that class schedules provide.
- [00:01:28.440]So why wouldn't we make information available at all times?
- [00:01:32.489](upbeat music)
- [00:01:34.530]When I take on doctoral students,
- [00:01:36.700]I'm looking for students who are motivated,
- [00:01:38.680]who are passionate,
- [00:01:39.513]who care a lot about the topics that they want to study.
- [00:01:42.150]It's my job to really develop those interests
- [00:01:44.350]and to fine-tune those questions,
- [00:01:46.460]so that when my students walk out of here,
- [00:01:48.450]they're coming away with a project that reflects
- [00:01:50.040]their own interests, their own lived experiences,
- [00:01:52.690]and their own realities.
- [00:01:54.279](upbeat music)
- [00:01:56.230]Our department is really one of a kind.
- [00:01:58.870]It's exceptional in the service that we provide,
- [00:02:01.490]the quality that we provide to students,
- [00:02:04.030]and there's just no place else like it.
- [00:02:06.042](upbeat music)
