- [00:00:08.481]the Olympics in Mexico City in 1968
- [00:00:11.130]thinkin' you know, I thought maybe that might be something
- [00:00:13.610]that I'd like to do.
- [00:00:16.550]Once I had placed third,
- [00:00:18.160]then the dream of becoming an Olympian started
- [00:00:20.830]to become a reality.

- [00:00:24.872]The Olympics is not about victory.
- [00:00:27.910]It's about competition.
- [00:00:39.930]We walked like we were a military group
- [00:00:43.210]you might say and we had our caps and all that
- [00:00:45.800]and everything you could tell us.
- [00:00:48.420]And it was fun.
- [00:00:50.950]The single biggest thrill that most
- [00:00:52.830]Olympic athletes have
- [00:00:54.830]is the thrill of being able to march as part
- [00:00:58.150]of the United States team into the opening ceremony stadium
- [00:01:00.610]and seeing the crowd go nuts and just feel
- [00:01:03.420]the electricity that comes from that.
- [00:01:06.640]You can feel the pressure, the tension,
- [00:01:10.140]and all of a sudden, someone says to you,
- [00:01:11.960]"Runners to your mark."
- [00:01:13.250]You've heard that about 2,000 times, right?
- [00:01:15.830]But this time it's for real.
- [00:01:17.440]Of all the things I've ever done in my life
- [00:01:19.010]it's clearly the most unbelievable experience.
- [00:01:22.540]No question of what I felt like I was representing
- [00:01:26.090]the people of Nebraska because
- [00:01:27.820]I was in a very unique position.
- [00:01:30.740]And here is Francis of America.

- [00:01:38.260]There were 125,000 in that stadium every day.
- [00:01:43.060]To be able to wear your own country's uniform,
- [00:01:46.270]you just got a thrill.
- [00:01:48.330]That's all there is to it.
- [00:01:49.848]And some of you almost wet your pants.
- [00:01:52.000]Excuse me.
- [00:01:54.647]Being an Olympian I think has filled me
- [00:01:56.440]with a sense of pride throughout my entire life.
- [00:01:59.050]And I think it leaves you with a sense of being able
- [00:02:02.270]to do whatever you set your mind to do.
- [00:02:04.590]Because it wasn't easy.
- [00:02:06.070]And while they're playing the National Anthem,
- [00:02:07.500]the place goes quiet.
- [00:02:08.730]And what you think about is how lucky you are.
- [00:02:11.420]Gives you a chance to think about it, you know?
