- [00:00:00.285](calm violin music)
- [00:00:06.315]It's been predicted that by year 2050,
- [00:00:08.919]the population of earth will be
- [00:00:10.957]more than nine billion people.
- [00:00:13.186]Now this means that there's a big challenge ahead of us
- [00:00:16.303]in order to feed this large of a population.
- [00:00:20.126]One of the solutions is to teach the future generation,
- [00:00:24.920]who are decision makers, at the very beginning,
- [00:00:27.772]how to make these decisions
- [00:00:29.303]which can be sustained over a longer period of time,
- [00:00:32.476]so that we can meet this global challenge.
- [00:00:41.110]Systems thinking is an approach of problem solving,
- [00:00:45.207]where you look into different components
- [00:00:49.202]and the complex inter-relationships
- [00:00:51.337]between those components of a system.
- [00:00:53.831]So the idea is, so that when you make decisions,
- [00:00:57.273]you are not just focusing on one part of the system,
- [00:01:00.163]but looking at what could be the impact of this decisions
- [00:01:03.293]on other parts of this system.
- [00:01:17.809]I love working with the University of Nebraska
- [00:01:20.385]on projects like this because it brings new energy
- [00:01:23.319]into the after school space.
- [00:01:25.120]By identifying a problem like sustainable agriculture
- [00:01:28.785]and systems thinking for agriculture,
- [00:01:30.830]and then creating a platform for young people
- [00:01:32.891]in the after school world to start getting involved with,
- [00:01:35.549]that's a win-win.
- [00:01:36.632]Kids are gonna love that kind of
- [00:01:37.812]hands-on engaged programming,
- [00:01:39.492]it's gonna be building that pipeline
- [00:01:41.540]that the University needs for kids who are determined
- [00:01:45.002]to solve the problems
- [00:01:46.533]confronting their communities in the future.
- [00:01:48.495]So this is a win-win for all of us involved.
- [00:02:02.222]Our next step going through with our aquaponics project
- [00:02:05.073]is to actually go out into the high schools
- [00:02:07.074]and take our aquaponics kids with us,
- [00:02:09.829]and teach the high school students about the system
- [00:02:12.554]and have them actually build them,
- [00:02:14.475]and then we want those high school students
- [00:02:15.914]to relay that information and
- [00:02:17.288]teach the middle school students about it.
- [00:02:19.035]Having this opportunity to understand
- [00:02:22.627]and solve a problem using this aquaponics setup,
- [00:02:26.367]our youth and our students will be able
- [00:02:28.376]to take this learning and apply it to larger problems,
- [00:02:31.639]and when they make decisions.
- [00:02:34.095]I am excited about this project because first,
- [00:02:38.306]it is an opportunity to work
- [00:02:41.668]and bring the community together,
- [00:02:43.747]the undergraduate students together,
- [00:02:45.711]and the middle school and the high school students together.
- [00:02:48.675]And then of course,
- [00:02:49.833]it is giving us an opportunity to actually see how we can
- [00:02:54.480]try to contribute to the solution
- [00:02:56.373]of what we will be facing by year 2050.
