- [00:00:00.512]Welcome to Inspired by Engler.
- [00:00:02.237]This is Hayley Urke.
- [00:00:03.512]And I am doing a podcast
- [00:00:05.106]today over the Lean Startup Conference.
- [00:00:07.569]I have with me today Michael Purcell,
- [00:00:09.975]who attended the Lean Startup Conference
- [00:00:12.423]in Silicon Valley, California.
- [00:00:15.009]Thanks for having me here today Michael.
- [00:00:17.708]Thanks for having me.
- [00:00:20.455]Okay so can you tell me what is
- [00:00:22.836]memorable about the conference?
- [00:00:24.599]The conference was very memorable.
- [00:00:27.630]There were a lot of memorable speakers, but sort of
- [00:00:30.171]the pace of how quick it was, how much we got done
- [00:00:34.429]inside of these small amount of time.
- [00:00:37.919]It was memorable because we went so fast.
- [00:00:42.438]You have the chance to see and hear
- [00:00:44.891]Eric Ries in person.
- [00:00:46.889]What do you think of his startup persona?
- [00:00:51.757]I think that the Lean Startup
- [00:00:55.002]is his own startup in itself.
- [00:00:59.474]And I think he sort of sells it as a business
- [00:01:03.948]more then.
- [00:01:08.197]He knows he has a business there.
- [00:01:11.234]And it is what he is working on to create the business
- [00:01:15.117]and it's not necessarily something that he
- [00:01:21.613]believes is perfect
- [00:01:24.153]It's more a way for him to make money.
- [00:01:26.188]You also had the chance to hear from
- [00:01:28.342]Chip Heath in person.
- [00:01:30.706]The writer of "Power in Moments".
- [00:01:33.555]What did you think about his persona?
- [00:01:35.762]I think he's a really bright guy and
- [00:01:38.805]I think he has a tremendous amount of insights.
- [00:01:42.572]I'm reading his book right now that he was talking
- [00:01:46.466]about the power of moments and it was
- [00:01:51.011]it's a pheromonal thing to help me in the future I believe.
- [00:01:55.853]With different ideas.
- [00:01:57.473]You have been into Silicon Valley California
- [00:01:59.588]before.
- [00:02:00.487]How did this trip change your outlook,
- [00:02:03.546]or what you learned or the culture from your prior trip
- [00:02:07.584]to now, in reflecting back upon on it?
- [00:02:09.845]There was one point that really made me
- [00:02:12.298]think that it was Silicon Valley was when people were
- [00:02:16.488]pitching their own ideas in the Startup Weekend.
- [00:02:21.349]And it was sort of like crazy ideas.
- [00:02:25.853]But that's sort of what I've come to expect from
- [00:02:28.969]Silicon Valley and the way that they sort of
- [00:02:32.538]believe anything's possible because everything's
- [00:02:35.908]happening there right now.
- [00:02:39.112]Doing some amazing things with technology.
- [00:02:42.627]What were your entrepreneurial goals
- [00:02:44.640]going into the conference and how did they change
- [00:02:48.309]as you were at the conference?
- [00:02:49.718]I was really interested in meeting and
- [00:02:53.079]networking with professionals sort of.
- [00:02:56.244]That were
- [00:02:57.168]interested in Lean Startups so other entrepreneurs.
- [00:03:00.816]But also people that were more comfortable in the
- [00:03:05.121]Silicon Valley area and what they are working on
- [00:03:09.601]in Silicon Valley.
- [00:03:11.043]And so that was what I was really
- [00:03:13.796]interested in doing, was meeting with those people
- [00:03:17.299]and that was something I stayed consistent with
- [00:03:19.679]throughout the conference.
- [00:03:21.197]What is something new, like a
- [00:03:23.773]methodology or a piece of feedback about something
- [00:03:26.437]you heard at the conference that made a connection
- [00:03:28.691]with something you've heard or learned in your past?
- [00:03:32.058]I think something that really stuck with me
- [00:03:35.179]that was new was Chip Heath's idea of the power of moments.
- [00:03:40.796]So I'm looking back now, it's been a while since
- [00:03:46.059]I've been at the conference but I remember the peaks
- [00:03:51.361]and the lows and I also sort of remember the
- [00:03:54.988]very last things.
- [00:03:56.404]And those are really what are
- [00:03:59.222]dominating the way I think about how the conference
- [00:04:03.747]went for me.
- [00:04:04.690]So I really remember him as a speaker,
- [00:04:07.756]and I remember Eric Ries as a speaker because
- [00:04:11.361]he was the last speaker.
- [00:04:14.644]And then I don't really remember a low that is
- [00:04:18.548]distinctive so I remember sort of as a positive
- [00:04:21.629]experience all together.
- [00:04:23.062]And this is something
- [00:04:24.376]that I really hope to be able to integrate into
- [00:04:27.896]other experiences that I want to make.
- [00:04:33.875]While you were at your conference,
- [00:04:35.809]can you tell us a little a bit about the crazy
- [00:04:37.533]start up ideas you heard?
- [00:04:38.998]A lot of them had to do with
- [00:04:42.972]just large scale tech ideas
- [00:04:46.671]that were like either artificial inelegance,
- [00:04:51.371]machine learning, large hardware projects
- [00:04:57.903]that sort of really were going to take a
- [00:05:01.353]long time to produce and perfect before
- [00:05:05.504]you have a real minimum viable product.
- [00:05:09.461]And I thought it was really interesting to hear people
- [00:05:14.475]pitch them with such confidence.
- [00:05:17.148]Would you want more Engler students
- [00:05:19.655]to attend this conference?
- [00:05:22.692]Yeah, definitely.
- [00:05:24.357]I think it's a great
- [00:05:25.564]experience and it could help a lot of Engler students.
- [00:05:29.478]Could you give me three recommendations
- [00:05:32.445]or advice you would give to those future students
- [00:05:35.607]who would be going to the conference?
- [00:05:37.592]First of all there's going to be a list
- [00:05:40.912]of speakers going into it.
- [00:05:43.056]Know what speakers you want to talk to before you
- [00:05:46.819]are there so that you can listen to the ones
- [00:05:50.179]you want to listen to.
- [00:05:51.923]One thing you should read up about is the Lean Startup.
- [00:05:54.666]I wasn't familiar with it going in and now that I
- [00:05:58.607]sort of figured it out in the middle of the conference,
- [00:06:03.021]everything started to make a little bit more sense
- [00:06:06.191]when they were talking about it.
- [00:06:08.702]And also knowing.
- [00:06:10.815]So there will be a list of what people will be
- [00:06:14.571]talking about.
- [00:06:15.714]And make sure you sort of understand
- [00:06:19.538]what they're talking about before you go in there.
- [00:06:22.738]Because just understanding it isn't going to be helpful
- [00:06:27.541]because the insights are the most important
- [00:06:30.177]part from speakers.
- [00:06:31.678]What is it like to spend time with your
- [00:06:34.389]fellow Engler entrepreneurs?
- [00:06:36.327]Spending time with Engler entrepreneurs
- [00:06:38.184]is a lot of fun.
- [00:06:39.305]I would talk specifically about
- [00:06:41.549]the fact that I wasn't too familiar with Andrew,
- [00:06:45.104]Eric and Zach before the trip, but it was great to
- [00:06:50.509]be able to meet them and get to know them on the trip.
- [00:06:55.530]They're great guys and it was nice
- [00:06:58.382]to really get to meet them.
- [00:07:01.272]Lastly, a question we'd like to ask
- [00:07:03.668]because it puts your mind on the spot.
- [00:07:05.490]What is your newspaper headline about your experience
- [00:07:08.800]at the Lean Startup Conference?
- [00:07:11.258]I think the easiest way to put it probably is
- [00:07:14.954]Nebraska Engler Entrepreneurship students
- [00:07:18.993]visit Silicon Valley conference.
- [00:07:23.527]You've been tuning into Inspired by Engler.
- [00:07:26.355]Again I'm Haley Urke, a sophomore agribusiness major
- [00:07:29.430]at The University of Nebraska - Lincoln.
