- [00:00:00.074]Welcome back, halftime at the Oscar's game
- [00:00:01.688]against Fort Atlantic.
- [00:00:02.656]Greg Sharp in our Sports Network studios,
- [00:00:04.190]along with University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor
- [00:00:06.769]Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:07.682]The semester is over, and what the end of a semester means,
- [00:00:11.028]you had a graduation ceremony this past weekend,
- [00:00:13.746]and I know it's one of your favorite times
- [00:00:14.821]of the year.
- [00:00:15.654]Well it sure is.
- [00:00:16.487]You know, our number one and primary mission
- [00:00:19.010]of the university is education, and that means the
- [00:00:22.831]20-something thousand undergraduate students
- [00:00:25.765]who we educate and the 5,000, uh so graduate students
- [00:00:29.059]that we have on our campus, and three times a year
- [00:00:32.042]we get to celebrate with them and their families,
- [00:00:34.556]in commencements in December, and our big one in May,
- [00:00:37.778]and in August, as well, in our summer commencement.
- [00:00:40.263]So, last Saturday, our undergraduates,
- [00:00:42.941]about 1500 of them in Pinnacle Bank Arena,
- [00:00:45.522]with their families, graduating and celebrating that
- [00:00:48.593]undergraduate degree completion, and on Friday afternoon,
- [00:00:51.803]our graduate degree ceremony for our
- [00:00:54.689]masters and doctoral students.
- [00:00:56.562]So, exciting time of the year,
- [00:00:59.040]not only for those people that walk out
- [00:01:01.425]with those diplomas in their hand,
- [00:01:03.007]but their families, and their supporters,
- [00:01:04.889]who have been by their side in helping them achieve
- [00:01:08.031]that milestone in their life.
- [00:01:09.584]You preceded over the commencement ceremonies,
- [00:01:12.132]that's gotta be quite a sight to look at,
- [00:01:13.530]over PBA and see all the students in their caps and gowns,
- [00:01:17.519]and knowing that it's such a big day for them,
- [00:01:19.063]and now that they're gonna be Nebraska alumni.
- [00:01:20.887]Yeah, it, it is.
- [00:01:22.157]I mean, you sit there and you see the,
- [00:01:24.296]the, I, I kinda liken it to joy on the faces
- [00:01:28.657]of the students on the floor of Pinnacle Bank Arena,
- [00:01:31.541]and then you look around the arena,
- [00:01:33.509]and you see all of those family members and,
- [00:01:36.174]and loved ones who have supported them
- [00:01:37.938]as we said earlier, and then you recognize
- [00:01:40.337]what they're gonna have the opportunity to do.
- [00:01:42.326]Right?
- [00:01:43.159]Their lives ahead of them, or for some
- [00:01:46.165]in the middle of their lives as they're going
- [00:01:48.052]into a new, new career, or new profession,
- [00:01:51.510]and you think about how special that is gonna be
- [00:01:55.021]for them, you know, so, thinkin' about people like,
- [00:01:58.436]for example, Wilson Hup.
- [00:02:01.292]He's from O'Neill, Nebraska, graduated this weekend,
- [00:02:04.190]agribusiness major, plannin' to continue his education,
- [00:02:07.192]and he's exploring law school, so wants to take
- [00:02:09.766]that next step.
- [00:02:10.643]Or Allison Porter, from Sterling, Nebraska, out state,
- [00:02:14.091]a biological systems engineering major,
- [00:02:15.922]who is an undergrad research assistant.
- [00:02:18.235]She had research experience while she was at UNL
- [00:02:22.273]that provided the tools to complete two internships
- [00:02:24.570]with NASA.
- [00:02:25.403]Wow.
- [00:02:26.361]And our space program.
- [00:02:28.311]And there she discovered her passion
- [00:02:30.088]for biomedical engineering application
- [00:02:32.795]to human space flight, that she hopes to work in now
- [00:02:36.439]as she moves into her professional career.
- [00:02:39.395]Or Peter Scorlet, from Moline, Illinois,
- [00:02:41.909]one of our out of state students,
- [00:02:45.055]broadcasting and advertising major,
- [00:02:47.913]worked on campus as a resident assistant
- [00:02:50.803]in one of our dorms, in Abel Hall,
- [00:02:53.730]watching his career at KLKN as a reporter
- [00:02:57.391]here in Lincoln.
- [00:02:58.586]We'll hear from Pierce as he moves into his career.
- [00:03:01.549]Or Amanda Easterly, originally another
- [00:03:03.259]out of state student, from Greeley, Colorado,
- [00:03:05.365]in northeastern Colorado.
- [00:03:07.346]Also from Sydney, has roots in the Sydney area,
- [00:03:11.616]earned her bachelor's degree in 2011,
- [00:03:13.641]and just received her PhD in agronomy
- [00:03:16.986]and plant breeding and genetics.
- [00:03:18.367]So you know, you look out on these faces,
- [00:03:20.374]and you see those degree recipients,
- [00:03:23.599]and you think about all the great things
- [00:03:25.320]they're gonna do in their life,
- [00:03:26.769]and all the hopes and dreams of the future,
- [00:03:29.384]it kinda fills PBA with a very special feelin'.
- [00:03:32.497]So congratulations to all of those now 1500
- [00:03:36.215]new alumni of the University of Nebraska.
- [00:03:38.809]Wonderful stories.
- [00:03:39.684]Great to see you, happy holidays to you,
- [00:03:41.302]catch you breath here between semesters.
- [00:03:42.838]Oh, absolutely.
- [00:03:43.813]Gonna read some books, gonna watch some sports,
- [00:03:46.118]and gonna enjoy some family.
- [00:03:47.762]So, I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas
- [00:03:49.652]and happy New Year.
- [00:03:50.841]Go Big Red.
- [00:03:51.674]Very good.
- [00:03:52.507]Ronnie Green here with us here at halftime.
- [00:03:53.340]Matt Cookney's got more second half action,
- [00:03:54.744]comin' up next.
