- [00:00:02.876]Welcome to FailSafe.
- [00:00:04.376]How Do You Like Me Now?
- [00:00:06.353]Not like you didn't already know this,
- [00:00:08.628]but college is all about making friends
- [00:00:10.481]and finding your group.
- [00:00:12.224]Did you ever notice how people who like the same things,
- [00:00:14.667]seem to find each other in college?
- [00:00:16.871]Well it's one of the reasons your school
- [00:00:18.247]has student organizations.
- [00:00:20.195]People with similar interests and values hang out together.
- [00:00:23.135]They get each other.
- [00:00:24.455]People who love being athletic,
- [00:00:26.391]tend to hang out with other athletes.
- [00:00:27.903]People who love studying,
- [00:00:29.657]tend to hang out with other scholars.
- [00:00:31.235]You get the point.
- [00:00:32.975]High risk drinkers, also tend to hang out together.
- [00:00:36.275]In fact, if your organization has any kind of
- [00:00:39.199]reputation for being big partiers,
- [00:00:41.493]either because some of your members are notorious
- [00:00:43.727]for their drinking, or because organizations like yours
- [00:00:46.036]are know for partying,
- [00:00:48.531]well chances are you're attracting everyone on campus
- [00:00:51.903]who also loves to party.
- [00:00:54.051]And just like everyone else, they show you
- [00:00:56.811]that they can party right along side you like a champ.
- [00:00:59.988]There's only one problem.
- [00:01:01.849]Sometimes they can't.
- [00:01:03.543]When they fail and then they become your problem.
- [00:01:07.518]Let's use an example from a sports club.
- [00:01:09.333]Let's say there's a freshman athlete who wants
- [00:01:11.445]to impress the senior team members on the sports club,
- [00:01:14.639]but see she she hasn't really trained nearly
- [00:01:16.334]as long as they have.
- [00:01:17.532]She doesn't have the same knowledge.
- [00:01:19.407]No, she's not ready to do the same amazing moves
- [00:01:21.750]that they can do, and so while she tries,
- [00:01:24.536]she tears out her ACL.
- [00:01:26.398]Bye-bye sports club.
- [00:01:28.650]Well the same thing happens way more often than you think,
- [00:01:32.130]with new students who try to drink like a pro,
- [00:01:34.634]but who have no clue how to do it safely.
- [00:01:37.902]They think you think that they're all that,
- [00:01:40.454]if they get really, really drunk,
- [00:01:42.134]and if they drink as much as they think you must drink.
- [00:01:45.250]But instead they just get really, really drunk,
- [00:01:48.806]and have all kinds of problems.
- [00:01:51.504]You wind up cleaning up after them
- [00:01:53.278]or carting them to the ER or picking them up from detox.
- [00:01:56.846]This happens everyday, I mean a lot,
- [00:02:00.222]on campuses all over the country.
- [00:02:02.502]And instead of impressing you with their ability
- [00:02:05.050]to party along side you, well they become the liability
- [00:02:08.230]to the entire organization.
- [00:02:11.398]But there are lots of reasons why a new member
- [00:02:13.466]in your group might assume that he or she
- [00:02:16.242]had to party hearty to fit in.
- [00:02:18.298]Our assumptions about a lot of things can be off
- [00:02:20.588]when we're new.
- [00:02:21.421]I mean we think straight A students
- [00:02:22.759]study all the time, or people who are good
- [00:02:25.131]at sports train really hard all the time.
- [00:02:27.949]As you learned from doing the new member alcohol profile,
- [00:02:31.327]we often have the wrong idea about how much
- [00:02:33.851]or how often other people drink,
- [00:02:36.163]or what they think about drinking.
- [00:02:38.383]The next three tools in your toolkit
- [00:02:40.063]are about helping new members in your group,
- [00:02:42.131]and everyone else get an accurate picture
- [00:02:44.342]of who you really are and what really impresses you.
- [00:02:48.089]You'll have a chance to communicate your standards
- [00:02:50.546]and share your successes at avoiding problems when drinking.
- [00:02:53.470]More importantly, you'll be able to help people understand,
- [00:02:56.426]what makes them a vibrant member of your group.
- [00:03:00.594]Three tools, one result.
- [00:03:02.922]Everybody's on the same page.
- [00:03:04.990]So, everybody wins!
