- [00:00:36.921]Then bam, I run right into
- [00:00:38.511]some stupid driver who stopped for traffic.
- [00:00:41.509]So, what caused the crash?
- [00:00:44.133]Well, texting while driving, yeah.
- [00:00:46.570]But we could all the way back
- [00:00:48.459]to sleeping through the alarm
- [00:00:50.204]to really understand why this happened
- [00:00:52.468]and how to avoid it in the future.
- [00:00:54.506]Well, that's the great thing about managing risk.
- [00:00:56.649]If you connect all the dots, you can figure out how
- [00:00:59.416]to avoid problems from the very start.
- [00:01:02.487]Now let's take a fairly common scenario
- [00:01:04.412]among college student organizations
- [00:01:06.472]and do some walking back.
- [00:01:08.440]Let's start at the point where everything starts
- [00:01:10.497]to go bad.
- [00:01:12.234]A freshman guy is passed out on the couch
- [00:01:14.498]at a party hosted by members of your organization.
- [00:01:18.075]Nobody's really been paying attention
- [00:01:20.072]because the place is really crowded.
- [00:01:22.010]But as the party clears somebody notices
- [00:01:25.566]that he's not looking so good.
- [00:01:27.583]Nobody can wake him up and he's not breathing very well.
- [00:01:31.293]Somebody calls 911 and the sirens start wailing
- [00:01:34.722]toward the party, which has everyone scattering like ants.
- [00:01:38.691]Party over, trouble begins.
- [00:01:42.221]How did that happen?
- [00:01:43.944]Well, like the car crash,
- [00:01:45.835]there may be missteps going back a good week
- [00:01:48.332]before this moment that contributed to the outcome.
- [00:01:51.642]Let's walk it back.
- [00:01:53.212]Before the guy passes out,
- [00:01:54.732]people at the party keep feeding him shots,
- [00:01:57.114]even though he's already showing signs
- [00:01:58.754]of being way intoxicated.
- [00:02:01.264]But if being a little drunk is fun,
- [00:02:03.104]then being a lot drunk will be a blast, right?
- [00:02:06.186]Well, he's not thinking much about how he can handle
- [00:02:08.539]and what the potential risks are for drinking so much.
- [00:02:12.067]And he seems to really want to drink more,
- [00:02:13.914]so who are we to say no?
- [00:02:16.252]Before the shots, though,
- [00:02:17.907]he comes through the door with two friends.
- [00:02:20.690]The three of them split up almost immediately.
- [00:02:23.034]And even though they stumble by lots of members
- [00:02:25.323]of your organization, no one steps up to find out
- [00:02:28.711]who they know at the party.
- [00:02:30.472]The person feeding our guy shots has no idea
- [00:02:32.421]who invited him, how old he is,
- [00:02:34.778]or how much he's been drinking.
- [00:02:36.689]In other words, no one notices that a drunk,
- [00:02:39.464]underage guy that no one knows, a true liability,
- [00:02:43.774]is at our party.
- [00:02:45.675]So how'd he get in?
- [00:02:47.488]Well, like most of the parties your organization hosts,
- [00:02:49.969]the door to the house, a house that's rented
- [00:02:52.042]by four members of the group, is wide open.
- [00:02:54.547]No one's standing at the door checking for invitations,
- [00:02:57.791]because there's no invitation list.
- [00:03:00.257]Before the party starts,
- [00:03:01.562]the group members in the house did
- [00:03:02.640]what they always do to get ready for a party.
- [00:03:05.285]They make a big trash can of punch,
- [00:03:07.738]filled with all kinds of alcohol in it.
- [00:03:10.705]They made space on the tables for cups and bottles,
- [00:03:13.738]and they cleared the refrigerator for beer and ice.
- [00:03:16.190]No food, no alternate beverages.
- [00:03:19.291]Oh, and they made sure the door was open
- [00:03:21.045]and the music was cranked high.
- [00:03:23.229]Let's walk back a little further.
- [00:03:24.611]Four days before the party,
- [00:03:26.357]several of your organization's members told the group
- [00:03:28.947]that there was gonna be a big party at the house
- [00:03:30.994]of the four group members and that
- [00:03:32.820]everyone should spread the word.
- [00:03:34.509]They even referred to the party as being given for
- [00:03:37.026]or given by the entire group.
- [00:03:39.819]No one talked about what this meant
- [00:03:41.505]or the liability this could create for the group.
- [00:03:43.906]After all, different members
- [00:03:45.172]of the group host parties all the time.
- [00:03:47.972]Let's walk back even further, way before this event.
- [00:03:51.373]At the start of the year meeting,
- [00:03:53.106]group members bragged about
- [00:03:54.387]how the organization has a reputation
- [00:03:56.925]as being great partiers
- [00:03:58.314]and how the group's parties are the most popular on campus,
- [00:04:01.359]especially among freshmen.
- [00:04:03.462]Several members share their favorite stories
- [00:04:05.508]about partying and laughed about people
- [00:04:07.249]who'd gotten really drunk at parties the group had hosted.
- [00:04:10.666]So do you see how, when we walk way back,
- [00:04:13.756]we get a different picture on how to avoid those problems?
