- [00:00:00.220]Welcome back.
- [00:00:01.053]It's half-time of the Huskers game
- [00:00:01.886]against the Creighton Bluejays,
- [00:00:02.964]Greg Sharp with you here in our
- [00:00:04.733]Husker Network studios and delighted
- [00:00:05.922]to be joined by University of Nebraska,
- [00:00:07.973]Lincoln, chancellor Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:09.336]We've got this in-state battle
- [00:00:10.388]between the Huskers and Bluejays in this game here today.
- [00:00:13.082]I wanna talk to you something that happened
- [00:00:15.061]earlier in the week as we look ahead
- [00:00:16.642]at this in-state match-up.
- [00:00:18.036]The University announced a new partnership
- [00:00:20.017]with implications for education
- [00:00:22.006]throughout the state, what can you tell
- [00:00:23.606]our audience about that?
- [00:00:24.980]Well, you know Greg, the University
- [00:00:26.823]partners with all aspects of the state of Nebraska,
- [00:00:30.942]it's the state's public institution,
- [00:00:33.596]it's the flagship institution of the University
- [00:00:36.498]for our state, with statewide implications across the board.
- [00:00:41.209]We partner with a lot of difference state agencies,
- [00:00:43.465]we partner with the education system,
- [00:00:45.390]we partner with various industries around the state,
- [00:00:48.543]and we're really excited about, you know,
- [00:00:51.472]about the new opportunity that we have
- [00:00:53.567]in the education sector, in particular in the
- [00:00:57.273]post-secondary level, how we're improving K-12 education.
- [00:01:01.560]And we have been doing that for a long time,
- [00:01:04.572]you know, our college of education and human sciences,
- [00:01:07.486]our Teacher's College, it used to be called
- [00:01:09.883]at one point in time, has been integral
- [00:01:11.737]to the educational system of the state of Nebraska,
- [00:01:15.046]throughout our history and this past week
- [00:01:18.421]we announced a new effort through CHS
- [00:01:20.821]that is leading a University partnership
- [00:01:23.539]with code.org to improve computer science education,
- [00:01:27.627]for Nebraska's K-12 students
- [00:01:30.272]and I'm really pleased about that.
- [00:01:32.269]Dr. Guy Tranin is a professor in our department
- [00:01:35.674]of Teaching Learning and Teacher Education,
- [00:01:37.698]we call it TLTE on campus,
- [00:01:39.817]he's with us today to talk about it.
- [00:01:42.393]Guy, welcome to our half-time
- [00:01:43.570]and what can you tell us about this new partnership?
- [00:01:47.420]We're really excited about this partnership,
- [00:01:49.888]this is a partnership that will help us build
- [00:01:52.108]the capacity to deliver computer science
- [00:01:54.785]education to every student in the state,
- [00:01:57.571]if they so desire, and that idea is really
- [00:01:59.839]to take what we already have,
- [00:02:01.758]which is access to technology in general,
- [00:02:04.858]and really take it to the next level,
- [00:02:07.437]in saying technology is a tool
- [00:02:09.238]to work in the modern world, but knowing how
- [00:02:11.496]to operate these tools, and knowing how to program them,
- [00:02:14.594]so going to level up, is really, really important
- [00:02:17.153]it's opportunities for the state,
- [00:02:18.859]it's about economics in the state,
- [00:02:21.742]we've got the Silicon Prairie and we want to expand it
- [00:02:24.377]we want to make sure that they're not just
- [00:02:26.413]bringing engineers from other places,
- [00:02:28.426]but we're growing them here, all the way
- [00:02:30.564]from elementary school, from middle school, high school,
- [00:02:32.844]and then coming to UNL, or to the other campuses
- [00:02:35.598]and really finding the way to stay in the state
- [00:02:38.799]with this new expertise and code.org
- [00:02:42.251]is really adding our to ability to deliver that
- [00:02:45.275]because what they are doing is they're taking
- [00:02:47.768]our knowledge of computer science,
- [00:02:49.257]and they're adding, with our help,
- [00:02:51.266]the education piece, so they're providing curriculum
- [00:02:54.544]to teachers, so they can teach something
- [00:02:56.828]that is coherent, and can fit within the time,
- [00:02:59.815]whether it's elementary, you obviously have
- [00:03:02.338]a little bit less time, in middle school
- [00:03:04.203]you get a real taste of programming,
- [00:03:05.945]and in high school you really get ready
- [00:03:07.931]for post-secondary education with that
- [00:03:10.968]as a career in mind.
- [00:03:14.291]We'll be able to fund teachers
- [00:03:17.430]who go and get professional development.
- [00:03:19.731]It'll start out-of-state, but it'll then,
- [00:03:21.588]in a year from now, be all in-state.
- [00:03:24.387]We'll have support throughout the years
- [00:03:26.032]to the teachers doing that.
- [00:03:28.076]We're doing code.org and this Saturday, actually,
- [00:03:31.377]in Lincoln, in Innovation Campus,
- [00:03:33.255]and we're inviting families to come with their kids
- [00:03:35.874]and get a taste of what computer science is all about
- [00:03:40.028]with the Hour of Code, but the idea is
- [00:03:41.709]Hour of Code is not enough, it's just a way
- [00:03:43.590]to get a taste and to get interested
- [00:03:45.079]then we want kids and all schools
- [00:03:47.272]to incorporate classes that really focus
- [00:03:49.458]on computer science education.
- [00:03:51.921]That's exciting.
- [00:03:52.754]Ronnie, this is really a team effort across
- [00:03:54.837]the University and what Guy outlined for us there,
- [00:03:57.307]it's one of the ways that makes Nebraska
- [00:03:58.648]stand out in the Big 10.
- [00:04:00.199]Absolutely, you know we're really proud of
- [00:04:02.187]what we call The Low Silos
- [00:04:04.465]at the University of Nebraska.
- [00:04:06.040]We have nine academic colleges,
- [00:04:07.624]and we constantly see these kinds of
- [00:04:10.642]collaborations and partnerships across colleges.
- [00:04:13.563]Here is the College of Arts and Sciences,
- [00:04:15.417]and the math area, the computer science area,
- [00:04:17.683]the College of Education and Human Sciences,
- [00:04:20.848]the Department of Computer Science and Engineering,
- [00:04:22.960]it's in both arts and sciences and engineering,
- [00:04:25.413]so it's exciting to see those kinds of partnerships
- [00:04:27.913]internally at the University,
- [00:04:30.078]and then the partnerships outside,
- [00:04:31.998]as Guy was talking about with the whole K-12
- [00:04:35.136]education system in the state of Nebraska.
- [00:04:37.583]That's what we do at the University of Nebraska,
- [00:04:40.438]and we're very proud of it.
- [00:04:41.517]Fantastic, great information.
- [00:04:42.768]Guy, thanks for coming in,
- [00:04:44.833]good to see you and great information.
- [00:04:46.450]Chancellor, always great to catch up.
- [00:04:47.586]It is, so Go Big Red, beat the Bluejays.
- [00:04:49.891]We've got more half-time coming up next.
