- [00:00:00.390](upbeat music)
- [00:00:03.163]This is one of my favorite times of year.
- [00:00:05.542]Leaves falling, combines churning,
- [00:00:08.966]and lights in Architecture Hall glowing late at night,
- [00:00:12.579]all signs that winter is coming
- [00:00:14.729]and our semester is drawing to a close.
- [00:00:17.802]It's also the culmination of much hard work,
- [00:00:20.328]so it's nice to see our students and faculty
- [00:00:22.792]recognized for their efforts.
- [00:00:25.406]I'm excited to report two student teams were honored
- [00:00:28.381]with the Award of Excellence
- [00:00:29.954]during the Society of American Registered Architects'
- [00:00:32.705]National Awards Ceremony.
- [00:00:35.004]Darren Hannigan, Brooke Sailor,
- [00:00:37.242]and Phung Hong were recognized
- [00:00:39.069]for their Bee Research Facility design project.
- [00:00:42.781]And Mallory Lane and Ben Kunz
- [00:00:44.556]were honored for Interstitial Hope.
- [00:00:47.032]That project also won the Emerging Architect's
- [00:00:50.146]Excellence in Unbuilt Architecture Honor Award
- [00:00:53.419]from AIA Nebraska,
- [00:00:55.356]and first place in the SGH Dry Design Competition.
- [00:00:59.906]Plus, interior design student Tessa Faye
- [00:01:03.066]received a silver award
- [00:01:04.496]from the Nebraska Iowa chapter of ASID
- [00:01:07.419]for her hospitality preservation project Treehouse,
- [00:01:11.080]Your Journey Begins here.
- [00:01:13.606]Take the elevator to the roof of this downtown building,
- [00:01:16.619]and you'll see the work of landscape architecture
- [00:01:18.732]program professor Richard Sutton.
- [00:01:21.482]He researches how to create low maintenance,
- [00:01:24.719]low cost, green roofing systems
- [00:01:27.596]to control storm water, moderate heat fluctuations,
- [00:01:31.319]and create biodiversity.
- [00:01:33.546]One of the most satisfying things to me
- [00:01:35.546]is that I hear from my colleagues
- [00:01:38.232]that are landscape architects
- [00:01:39.596]that can actually use this research tomorrow,
- [00:01:42.836]whether it be the plants, whether it be the techniques,
- [00:01:47.286]it's just a good use of my research,
- [00:01:49.846]and it's applicable.
- [00:01:51.522]That's applied research is what we're all about
- [00:01:53.496]at the Lane Grant University.
- [00:01:56.107]Sutton was recently recognized
- [00:01:57.870]with the American Society of Landscape Architects'
- [00:02:00.470]Honor Award for his work.
- [00:02:02.722]And he edited a new book
- [00:02:04.721]detailing an approach to creating green roof ecosystems.
- [00:02:09.145]Another research endeavor related to mitigating the effects
- [00:02:12.121]of urban development
- [00:02:13.771]is community and regional planning professor
- [00:02:15.858]Zhenhong Tang's water management project.
- [00:02:19.292]Agriculture is Nebraska's biggest water user,
- [00:02:22.229]but 2/3 of the state's population
- [00:02:24.404]live in urban areas,
- [00:02:26.556]so urban development is taking an increasingly larger share
- [00:02:30.391]of the resource pie.
- [00:02:32.566]Tang's research team
- [00:02:34.366]and the Nebraska Department of Natural Resources
- [00:02:37.439]are working hard to develop best practices
- [00:02:39.989]for predicting and planning for water usage.
- [00:02:43.739]City planners can use this information
- [00:02:45.826]to design towards more water efficient communities.
- [00:02:51.135]The focus on our environment
- [00:02:52.901]and finding innovative ways to reduce
- [00:02:54.865]the consumption of resources is ingrained in our pedagogy.
- [00:02:58.939]Associate professor Timothy Hemsath
- [00:03:01.415]and doctoral candidate Kaveh Bandhosseini
- [00:03:04.078]are doing amazing work with energy modeling
- [00:03:06.750]and have published an insightful, research-driven book
- [00:03:09.778]Energy Modeling in Architectural Design.
- [00:03:12.878]In all, the team spent an estimated
- [00:03:15.628]5,000 simulation hours
- [00:03:18.328]testing and validating their research.
- [00:03:21.889]This book takes energy efficient designs to a new level.
- [00:03:27.091]Many of you have probably heard the buzzword makerspace
- [00:03:30.028]a lot lately.
- [00:03:31.451]These are places of creation and innovation
- [00:03:34.778]where like-minded people gather to make amazing things.
- [00:03:39.051]Makerspaces are showing up in communities around the country
- [00:03:42.991]as a hub of activity.
- [00:03:45.251]There's a great deal we don't know
- [00:03:47.065]about the effectiveness of these spaces,
- [00:03:49.351]and most of us can't even agree
- [00:03:50.726]on what it takes to make a good makerspace.
- [00:03:53.801]Obviously, when we think about designs...
- [00:03:55.751]Interior design assistant professor Nate Bisek
- [00:03:58.501]has just received a Layman Grant
- [00:04:00.915]to explore best practices of makerspaces.
- [00:04:03.965]I can't wait to see how this project develops.
- [00:04:07.112]I'll keep you posted.
- [00:04:08.638]Finally, we're coming up on the 50th anniversary
- [00:04:12.415]of the London Program,
- [00:04:14.214]and are planning activities
- [00:04:15.515]to make this a memorable occasion.
- [00:04:18.438]I hope you have a wonderful and joyous season.
- [00:04:21.799]From our family to yours, Happy Holidays.
