- [00:00:00.022](uplifting music)
- [00:00:02.883]This is one of my favorite times of year.
- [00:00:05.733]Leaves falling, combines churning,
- [00:00:08.817]and lights in Architecture Hall glowing late at night.
- [00:00:12.294]All signs that winter is coming,
- [00:00:14.334]and our semester is drawing to a close.
- [00:00:17.806]It's also the culmination of much hard work,
- [00:00:19.933]so it's nice to see our students
- [00:00:21.848]and faculty recognized for their efforts.
- [00:00:24.909]I'm excited to report two student teams
- [00:00:27.735]were honored with the award of excellence during
- [00:00:29.893]the Society of American Registered
- [00:00:31.926]Architects National Awards Ceremony.
- [00:00:34.722]Darren Hegemann, Brooke Sayler,
- [00:00:36.967]and Phung Hong were recognized
- [00:00:38.936]for their Bee Research Facility Design Project.
- [00:00:42.239]And Mallory Lane and Ben Kunz were
- [00:00:44.321]honored for interstitial hope.
- [00:00:47.278]That project, also won the Emerging Architects
- [00:00:49.806]Excellence and Unbuilt Architecture
- [00:00:52.037]Honor Award from AIA Nebraska,
- [00:00:54.748]and first place in the SGH Dry Design competition.
- [00:00:59.629]Plus, interior design student Tessa Fay
- [00:01:02.932]received a silver award from the Nebraska-Iowa chapter
- [00:01:06.341]of ASID for her hospitality preservation project
- [00:01:09.636]Treehouse: Your Journey Begins Here.
- [00:01:13.457]Take the elevator to the roof of this downtown building,
- [00:01:16.098]and you'll see the work of landscape architecture
- [00:01:18.555]program professor Richard Sutton.
- [00:01:21.336]He researches how to create low-maintenance, low-cost
- [00:01:26.060]green roofing systems to control storm water,
- [00:01:28.918]moderate heat fluctuations, and create biodiversity.
- [00:01:33.537]One of the most satisfying things to me
- [00:01:35.441]is that I hear from my colleagues
- [00:01:38.057]who are landscape architects that can actually use
- [00:01:41.224]this research tomorrow.
- [00:01:42.722]Whether it be the plants, whether it be the techniques,
- [00:01:46.986]it's just a good use of my research.
- [00:01:49.694]And it's applicable.
- [00:01:51.248]That applied research is what we're all about
- [00:01:53.779]at a land grant university.
- [00:01:55.562]Sutton was recently recognized
- [00:01:57.805]with the American Society of Landscape Architects
- [00:02:00.418]Honor Award for his work,
- [00:02:02.374]And he edited a new book detailing an approach
- [00:02:05.583]to creating green roof ecosystems.
- [00:02:08.804]Another research endeavor related to mitigating
- [00:02:11.508]the effects of urban development
- [00:02:13.768]is community and regional planning professor
- [00:02:15.888]Zhenghong Tang's water management project.
- [00:02:18.460]Agriculture is Nebraska's biggest water user,
- [00:02:21.863]but 2/3 of the state's population live in urban areas,
- [00:02:25.944]So urban development is taking an increasingly larger share
- [00:02:29.992]of the resource pie.
- [00:02:31.887]Tang's research team and the Nebraska Department
- [00:02:35.534]of Natural Resource are working hard to develop
- [00:02:38.930]best practices for predicting and planning for water usage.
- [00:02:43.712]City planners can use this information to design toward
- [00:02:47.407]more water efficient communities.
- [00:02:50.970]The focus on our environment and finding innovative ways
- [00:02:54.131]to reduce the consumption of resources
- [00:02:56.248]is ingrained in our pedagogy.
- [00:02:58.522]Associate professor Timothy Hemsath
- [00:03:00.997]and doctoral candidate Kaveh Bandhosseini
- [00:03:03.692]are doing amazing work with energy modeling
- [00:03:06.437]and have published an insightful research-driven book,
- [00:03:09.611]Energy Modeling in Architectural Design.
- [00:03:12.235]In all, the team spent an estimated 5,000 simulation hours
- [00:03:17.874]testing and validating their research.
- [00:03:22.411]This book takes energy-efficient designs to a new level.
- [00:03:27.003]Many of you have probably heard
- [00:03:28.537]the buzz word "makerspace" a lot lately.
- [00:03:31.153]These are places of creation and innovation
- [00:03:34.306]where like-minded people gather to make amazing things.
- [00:03:38.608]Makerspaces are showing up in communities around the country
- [00:03:42.712]as a hub of activity.
- [00:03:44.927]There's a great deal we don't know about
- [00:03:47.006]the effectiveness of these spaces,
- [00:03:49.095]and most of us can't even agree on what it takes
- [00:03:51.283]to make a good makerspace.
- [00:03:55.558]Interior design assistant professor Nate Bicak
- [00:03:58.348]has just received a Layman grant
- [00:04:00.545]to explore best practices of makerspaces.
- [00:04:03.881]I can't wait to see how this project develops.
- [00:04:06.867]I'll keep you posted.
- [00:04:08.551]Finally, we're coming up on the 50th anniversary
- [00:04:12.178]of the London Program, and are planning activities
- [00:04:15.233]to make this a memorable occasion.
- [00:04:18.918]Be sure to stay in touch
- [00:04:20.373]because I love to learn about the work you're doing
- [00:04:23.103]and your life experiences.
- [00:04:25.049]I hope you have a wonderful and joyous season.
- [00:04:28.516]From our family to yours, happy holidays.
