- [00:00:08.589]For me, Order of the Engineer
- [00:00:10.647]was something my father, Dr. Larry Ehlers,
- [00:00:15.138]worked, I think, pretty hard to bring
- [00:00:17.248]to the University of Nebraska.
- [00:00:18.615]It was kind of almost a brotherhood,
- [00:00:21.869]sisterhood kind of thing
- [00:00:23.266]that he thought was important
- [00:00:24.656]just to be able to identify another engineer.
- [00:00:32.369]The concept of the continuous ring of steel.
- [00:00:36.324]There's an honor in engineering,
- [00:00:37.947]there's an integrity to engineering.
- [00:00:39.835]It's a scientific discipline
- [00:00:41.870]where we're trying to be intelligent
- [00:00:43.899]in our decision making,
- [00:00:45.376]where literally people's lives could be
- [00:00:49.556]impacted by decisions we make
- [00:00:51.624]in our designs or our creations.
- [00:00:54.335]And just that little reminder
- [00:00:56.542]that you have to do what's right because it matters.
- [00:01:00.174]Just countless occasions where
- [00:01:02.872]you see somebody with a stainless steel ring
- [00:01:05.933]on their little finger
- [00:01:07.549]and you know that it's an engineering ring
- [00:01:09.409]'cause there just really isn't anything like it.
- [00:01:15.334]It's a simple thing.
- [00:01:16.167]I mean, you join, you take the oath
- [00:01:18.177]that we did here just this evening,
- [00:01:21.444]and that may be the last
- [00:01:23.855]that you ever do as part of the organization,
- [00:01:26.294]but you wear that ring and it's a symbol
- [00:01:29.899]of an accomplishment, if nothing else,
- [00:01:32.070]of getting through an engineering program.
- [00:01:35.131]And that's a non-trivial thing.
- [00:01:39.471]No matter what you do in the rest of your life,
- [00:01:41.467]that engineering education and the discipline
- [00:01:44.129]that comes from that mode of thinking
- [00:01:46.689]that is taught at an engineering school,
- [00:01:49.270]will stay with you for your life.
- [00:01:51.145]I am an engineer.
- [00:01:52.846]In my profession I take deep pride.
- [00:01:55.754]To it, I owe a solemn obligations.
- [00:01:59.028]As an engineer, I pledge to practice integrity.
