- [00:00:02.760]Welcome back, countdown to kickoff here
- [00:00:03.985]on the Huskers Sports Network,
- [00:00:05.097]and as we do each and every week during our pre-game,
- [00:00:06.922]a chance to sit down with University

- [00:00:11.446]I cannot believe this is the final game of the season.
- [00:00:13.498]It's just flown by to me. I think they always do that.
- [00:00:16.509]So, that's amazing and by the way, happy Thanksgiving.
- [00:00:19.209]Hope ya got a little turkey in ya.
- [00:00:20.288]Happy Thanksgiving to you, Greg,
- [00:00:21.637]and all of our fans in Husker Nation.
- [00:00:24.619]Ya know, the year has gone really, really fast
- [00:00:27.086]and we've had a lot of things, as we always do,
- [00:00:30.726]going on at the people's university here at UNL
- [00:00:34.326]through the fall, ya know.
- [00:00:36.613]And we've got so much happening in our research program,
- [00:00:39.789]our teaching program.
- [00:00:41.796]Ya know, we have brought on, as you know,
- [00:00:45.222]a new leadership this past year.
- [00:00:47.032]We've talked about that several times throughout the year,
- [00:00:50.506]about our new vice-chancellors that have joined us, ya know.
- [00:00:54.823]And I used to have
- [00:00:56.199]this greatest-job-in-the-world kind of thing
- [00:00:57.892]that was called the vice-chancellor of the Institute
- [00:01:00.730]of Ag and Natural Resources,
- [00:01:02.449]and get to lead that great enterprise,
- [00:01:04.364]that is so important to this state and to this university
- [00:01:07.684]and is a world leader in itself.
- [00:01:10.748]Ya know, Coach Cook, ya know he talks about, he says
- [00:01:13.886]about coaching, he wants to put so much time
- [00:01:15.523]into his energy and his work.
- [00:01:17.682]He wants it to be a place that people really care about.
- [00:01:22.029]Well, this guy here, that you're gonna get to hear from
- [00:01:24.646]today, he may not be a native Nebraskan,
- [00:01:28.357]but he's come and joined this team,
- [00:01:30.881]is leading our Institute of Ag and Natural Resources.
- [00:01:34.238]Couldn't be more happy to have Mike Boehm
- [00:01:36.010]here with us today.
- [00:01:37.054]It's always fun to have a guest with you
- [00:01:38.677]on this segment, and Vice-Chancellor and System
- [00:01:40.806]Vice-President for the Institute
- [00:01:42.124]of Ag and Natural Resources.
- [00:01:43.693]Mike, great to have you with us.
- [00:01:44.990]I hope you had a good Thanksgiving.
- [00:01:46.498]Ah, yeah, absolutely.
- [00:01:48.385]I love this time of the year.
- [00:01:49.749]It's a chance to reflect and be thankful.
- [00:01:53.049]I couldn't be more thankful to be here, as Ronnie said,
- [00:01:56.036]what an opportunity, and it does seem like this year
- [00:01:58.947]has just flown.
- [00:02:00.269]You're a salesman, sailor, not a salesman.
- [00:02:02.782](men laughing)
- [00:02:03.665]You still have your boat?
- [00:02:04.673](Greg and Mike cross-talking)
- [00:02:05.683]I still have my boat in the water
- [00:02:07.450]and yesterday was chance to get it out one last time,
- [00:02:11.121]but I think my neighbors think I'm crazy, Greg, absolutely.
- [00:02:14.275]Not at all.
- [00:02:15.203]Well, it's great to have you here with us today.
- [00:02:16.612]You started 2017, Mike, and also, University's Chief
- [00:02:21.296]Academic Officer Donde Plowman did Nebraskans
- [00:02:23.480]with more than a dozen community visits.
- [00:02:25.200]She went around this state earlier this month.
- [00:02:28.043]The university offered to host, by inviting Nebraskans
- [00:02:31.404]to come here to Lincoln to explore critical issues
- [00:02:33.724]in the state.
- [00:02:34.557]What can you tell us about this effort?
- [00:02:36.251]Yeah absolutely. So, I had been around.
- [00:02:39.221]I had been to 80 counties.
- [00:02:40.761]When I interviewed, Ronnie was in the audience
- [00:02:43.607]and I was standing on the stage and said,
- [00:02:46.236]I'm gonna get to every single county in my first year.
- [00:02:49.809]And he looked and started laughing and chuckling,
- [00:02:52.534]so, the clock is ticking.
- [00:02:54.613]I have a little over a month to hit those last 13.
- [00:02:57.576]So, this was a little bit of an inverted visit, I guess.
- [00:03:02.915]We invited as many people as we could get to Lincoln
- [00:03:07.584]to something we called The Growing Nebraska Summit.
- [00:03:10.358]This was a first time, I think,
- [00:03:12.655]that we've tried anything like this.
- [00:03:15.037]In February, while the snow was still on the ground,
- [00:03:17.910]I asked my team to find the largest venue they could, Greg,
- [00:03:21.216]to bring together the best minds Nebraska had,
- [00:03:24.626]to really come together and think about the critical issues
- [00:03:27.514]that face Nebraska that we need to be paying attention to,
- [00:03:31.671]as the public, land-grant, flagship university
- [00:03:34.582]to really move the needle.
- [00:03:36.031]And I'm happy to say that, I think they thought I was crazy
- [00:03:39.437]at the time, as the calendar months went on,
- [00:03:43.375]they were wondering, hey, is this really happening?
- [00:03:45.670]But in the end, we attracted 441 Nebraskans.
- [00:03:51.523]And those 441 folks came from 53 different counties,
- [00:03:55.851]from 75 different towns across Nebraska.
- [00:03:59.210]And what this was gave us a chance to showcase
- [00:04:02.252]some of the work that our faculty are engaged in
- [00:04:06.023]and some of the things our students are working on.
- [00:04:08.692]We focused in four areas: creating a better quality of life,
- [00:04:12.948]educating tomorrow's learners through school and university
- [00:04:16.103]and community partnerships,
- [00:04:18.282]the third area was igniting a passion
- [00:04:20.289]for creative solutions, and the last segment of the day
- [00:04:23.449]was really focused on feeding a growing world,
- [00:04:27.189]really starting here at home
- [00:04:28.901]and thinking about food security and how we raise food
- [00:04:31.630]and do that in a sustainable manner.
- [00:04:34.432]We had just a fantastic time, but as I said
- [00:04:36.768]prior to the event, this wasn't a come and be talked at
- [00:04:39.834]kind of a session.
- [00:04:41.463]We spent as much time in groups, around tables,
- [00:04:45.890]round tables chatting with each other and it was just
- [00:04:50.313]an amazing, amazing day.
- [00:04:52.735]And after we worked everybody pretty hard,
- [00:04:55.531]we ended the day having Dairy Store ice cream.
- [00:04:57.859]Oh boy.
- [00:04:58.692]So, what a great ending.
- [00:05:00.253]Although with the pumpkin pie on board right now,
- [00:05:03.016]Dairy ice cream seems like a stretch.
- [00:05:05.800]But it was just an awesome day, and ya know, little things
- [00:05:09.153]like our nametags, it was little fun things.
- [00:05:12.557]The nametags basically said, hi, I'm Mike Boehm,
- [00:05:16.290]I'm a Nebraskan from, and then people had the chance
- [00:05:19.747]to fill in the blank and so it was a chance for us really
- [00:05:23.291]to come together at this reflective time of the year,
- [00:05:26.848]as Nebraskans first and foremost,
- [00:05:29.241]to think about moving Nebraska forward.
- [00:05:31.821]Putting on something that is a big undertaking
- [00:05:34.556]to do it, and then you go through it, and then at night,
- [00:05:37.148]you can sit back and reflect on it.
- [00:05:39.345]What did you take away from this,
- [00:05:41.073]now that you've experienced this?
- [00:05:42.990]Yeah, that's first of all, thanks to everybody
- [00:05:44.905]who had a hand in pulling this off because right,
- [00:05:47.407]it was my crazy idea.
- [00:05:48.858]Without the amazing women and men of the IANR,
- [00:05:51.994]this wouldn't have happened,
- [00:05:53.262]and without our colleagues and our partners.
- [00:05:57.009]I wanted to definitely say, of the 441, 2/3 of the folks
- [00:06:00.796]were from the university, but a third of the participants
- [00:06:03.603]had no affiliation directly with the university,
- [00:06:05.952]so, that was pretty amazing, and it couldn't have
- [00:06:08.697]happened without the citizenry getting engaged.
- [00:06:11.937]So, we have, first, if people are interested,
- [00:06:14.758]they can go and watch presentations.
- [00:06:16.859]Just Google, IANR Growing Nebraska Summit,
- [00:06:20.348]and the talks are there.
- [00:06:22.409]They're very much like TED Talks, so they're quick
- [00:06:25.162]and they're light-witted and very light but impactful.
- [00:06:31.477]So, we've got those types of data.
- [00:06:33.533]We also asked a lot of questions.
- [00:06:35.917]We've used a lot of technology.
- [00:06:37.341]We took polls, real, interactive polls.
- [00:06:40.459]So, we've collected all of this data
- [00:06:42.275]and what we're using this now is to really ground truth,
- [00:06:46.267]that we're on the right path.
- [00:06:47.719]I think we are, but now we're actually using this
- [00:06:50.668]to refine our strategic visioning document,
- [00:06:54.706]to ensure that as the Institute goes forward,
- [00:06:57.411]that we're on the right path and we're very excited
- [00:07:00.831]as the university will be celebrating its 150th birthday
- [00:07:04.996]next year, we at the university,
- [00:07:08.716]through Ronnie's leadership and Donde's partnership
- [00:07:11.154]with me and leadership, we are really working
- [00:07:14.522]on not only celebrating our 150th birthday,
- [00:07:17.580]but really thinking about the vision going forward.
- [00:07:20.138]Fantastic.
- [00:07:21.029]And Ronnie, just a wonderful outreach
- [00:07:22.801]to the state to get input about what's going on out there
- [00:07:26.039]and again, as we're getting ready to celebrate
- [00:07:28.137]a big anniversary, good to get this feedback, isn't it?
- [00:07:30.375]Oh, absolutely. I mean, we're 149 years counting
- [00:07:34.179]on 150, and we're looking out to what this next 150
- [00:07:38.106]is going to look like for us in meeting our mission
- [00:07:41.086]as the people's university.
- [00:07:42.556]So, great Thanksgiving. Hope we have a great game today.
- [00:07:45.584]Welcome to the Hawkeyes.
- [00:07:47.455]Couldn't be happier to have leadership
- [00:07:49.376]like we have from Mike.
- [00:07:50.967]And happy Thanksgiving to everybody.
- [00:07:52.841]Great. Mike Boehm, great to see you as well.
- [00:07:54.447]Have a great rest of your weekend.
- [00:07:55.847]Happy Thanksgiving, everybody, and go Big Red.
