- [00:00:13.102]We've got, ah, 80 minutes left
- [00:00:14.600]before kickoff for this game here today.
- [00:00:17.121]We like to sit down with University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:00:19.913]Chancellor Ronnie Green each and every week
- [00:00:21.567]during our pregame coverage.
- [00:00:23.244]Chancellor's back in Lincoln.
- [00:00:24.622]Great to have you with us here today.
- [00:00:26.004]We're here in Happy Valley.
- [00:00:26.940]I love to always get your thoughts about member schools
- [00:00:29.833]in the Big Ten conference and certainly
- [00:00:32.328]this is out in western Pennsylvania, ag country.
- [00:00:34.945]It's a land grant institution as well,
- [00:00:36.950]but it's got a great reputation,
- [00:00:38.397]doesn't it, Chancellor, around the country?
- [00:00:41.533]It sure does, State College is a special place.
- [00:00:44.837]I've been there many times, and I stayed there
- [00:00:49.080]when I was an undergraduate student a number of times
- [00:00:52.318]when I was in Virginia, and they have
- [00:00:54.124]great dairy store ice cream.
- [00:00:55.712]You know. (laughing)
- [00:00:58.380]It sure does.
- [00:00:59.340]I was hopin to try to get by that ice cream store,
- [00:01:01.115]but the trip did not allow me enough time
- [00:01:03.237]to go by and do that here today.
- [00:01:05.231]Well, when people talk about the University,
- [00:01:07.933]it's not uncommon that they will be mention that
- [00:01:10.858]we, meaning Nebraska, leads the nation
- [00:01:12.834]in the number of academic all-Americans.
- [00:01:15.402]It's something everybody on campus,
- [00:01:17.351]across the state of Nebraska, certainly are proud of.
- [00:01:19.853]Last week the athletic department announced
- [00:01:21.240]a related achievement, that graduation success rates
- [00:01:23.987]are at an all-time high this year.
- [00:01:26.588]Tell us what that means for the University.
- [00:01:30.072]Well, you know, our student athletes
- [00:01:32.154]continue to be among the nation's very best
- [00:01:34.577]in the classroom, you know, that academic all-American
- [00:01:36.925]record that we hold speaks to that.
- [00:01:41.623]We really, truly support each of our student athletes
- [00:01:45.004]in ways that you just don't find anywhere else
- [00:01:47.885]in the country, and you see that across the board,
- [00:01:51.230]really in all of our sports.
- [00:01:53.603]Particularly impressive, six of our Husker teams
- [00:01:56.887]have a perfect 100 graduation success rate.
- [00:02:00.175]That includes women's basketball, women's gymnastics,
- [00:02:03.305]softball, volleyball, women's tennis, and men's tennis.
- [00:02:07.060]And then even more impressive, Greg,
- [00:02:09.024]and exceptional, is the fact that
- [00:02:10.432]in each of the 13 years that that rate has been computed
- [00:02:14.419]by the NCAA, that our women's basketball,
- [00:02:17.525]women's tennis, and volleyball programs
- [00:02:19.651]have all achieved that perfect 100 score,
- [00:02:22.215]so that's pretty impressive.
- [00:02:23.929]Really remarkable achievement,
- [00:02:26.134]fantastic thing that we're very proud of,
- [00:02:28.626]and we always want to be continuing to pursue
- [00:02:31.757]that exceptional level of excellence
- [00:02:34.315]in our student athletes.
- [00:02:35.988]No question.
- [00:02:36.945]And again, you mentioned a lot of the Husker teams.
- [00:02:39.283]How about the Husker football team?
- [00:02:40.545]I know it has a strong graduation success rate.
- [00:02:43.570]How did they compare to their fellow Big Ten members
- [00:02:46.513]and some schools across the country?
- [00:02:49.303]Well, we're also proud of
- [00:02:50.634]our football team's GSR as we call it, grad success rate.
- [00:02:54.403]It's the second best currently in the Big Ten Conference.
- [00:02:57.763]The only school that we trail is Northwestern,
- [00:03:00.107]one of the prominent schools in the conference
- [00:03:02.953]and nationally.
- [00:03:04.283]Our football GSR is nine percentage points
- [00:03:07.541]above the national average for FBS,
- [00:03:10.598]Football Bowl Subdivision, programs
- [00:03:14.292]across the country, and amongst all of the
- [00:03:17.152]public universities and colleges across the US,
- [00:03:20.987]our football program is the third best GSR
- [00:03:24.710]amongst all of the power five conference schools.
- [00:03:27.644]So we're really proud of all of our student athletes
- [00:03:30.878]and even I'm proud of our football folks as well
- [00:03:33.979]for the way that they achieve in the classroom.
- [00:03:36.763]We are visiting with University of Nebraska,
- [00:03:38.424]Lincoln chancellor Ronnie Green here
- [00:03:39.986]on Countdown to Kickoff on the Huskers Sports Network.
- [00:03:42.833]Well, the University announced some other good news
- [00:03:44.994]in academic achievement recently,
- [00:03:47.051]related to faculty earning some national awards.
- [00:03:49.785]What can you tell us about that?
- [00:03:52.574]Well, Greg, we are very proud of our faculty,
- [00:03:55.383]obviously, on the campus at one of the
- [00:03:57.743]leading universities in the country.
- [00:04:00.335]And our faculty receive lots of awards
- [00:04:03.622]across all of the areas of study that we have,
- [00:04:06.149]but a number of those are very high-level,
- [00:04:08.663]prestigious, what are called National Research Council
- [00:04:11.695]level recognized awards.
- [00:04:14.255]If you look at, over the last period of
- [00:04:17.580]six, seven years time, in 2011, across the campus
- [00:04:22.326]we earned seven of those National Research Council
- [00:04:25.177]recognized awards from our faculty.
- [00:04:27.712]This past year we earned 23, so a big increase
- [00:04:32.209]in that level of national stature
- [00:04:35.409]that our faculty are achieving.
- [00:04:38.887]It's been an intentional effort on our part.
- [00:04:41.717]Back six years ago we decided that
- [00:04:43.880]the University wanted to grow in order to
- [00:04:46.486]meet the future needs of our state
- [00:04:48.439]and we recognized that one of those strategies
- [00:04:51.156]was growing the stature of our faculty
- [00:04:54.038]and national recognition.
- [00:04:55.455]So we, you know, we couldn't be more pleased about that
- [00:04:58.060]and pleased about the level of our faculty
- [00:05:01.982]and what they're achieving every day
- [00:05:03.502]with our students and for the state of Nebraska
- [00:05:05.792]and beyond.
- [00:05:07.045]Fantastic.
- [00:05:07.878]Fantastic information as always.
- [00:05:09.772]Chancellor, great to have you with us in the pregame.
- [00:05:11.808]Wish you were here with us, but we certainly understand
- [00:05:13.408]you have a lot of business to take care of
- [00:05:14.867]back in Lincoln.
- [00:05:16.030]Happy Thanksgiving to you and the Green family.
- [00:05:18.152]We'll see you back in Memorial Stadium next Friday.
- [00:05:21.695]I'm looking forward to it, Greg.
- [00:05:22.991]Go Big Red.
- [00:05:23.824]Have a good game today.
- [00:05:24.857]UNL Chancellor Ronnie Green
- [00:05:26.621]with us here on Countdown to Kickoff.
