- [00:00:11.765]Okay, guys, you all ready to start?
- [00:00:24.151]Alright, doesn't matter what does matter.
- [00:00:27.350]I suspect that it's filming, I'm not sure.
- [00:00:38.592]Can you ask them quickly if that is on?
- [00:00:44.614]Everybody doing okay?
- [00:00:46.144]I know we got this session
- [00:00:48.815]and the the session of budgeting and finance.
- [00:00:52.222]It's filming, okay, alright.
- [00:00:54.183]On finance and we're gonna get through this
- [00:00:58.128]and you'll have the rest of the evening.
- [00:01:03.916]That's very good, very tense.
- [00:01:06.077]You know what you need to do,
- [00:01:06.910]be where you need to be, that is awesome in my book.
- [00:01:12.582]He indicated, that it is going,
- [00:01:16.332]let me double check that one time, triple check.
- [00:01:26.036]I'll do it first on this board.
- [00:01:31.199]There's a little bit about me,
- [00:01:33.407]I am at the Peru university, I've been there since 2004.
- [00:01:38.792]When I arrived there I served as the department senior
- [00:01:43.808]for almost five plus years.
- [00:01:48.114]My area of expertize is transportation engineering
- [00:01:53.048]and I did my graduate statement,
- [00:01:56.129]I did my undergrad in sub university and bad wheelers
- [00:02:00.903]and I transitioned, it wasn't right after
- [00:02:04.319]that vehicle has worked Shellod company
- [00:02:07.454]as well as Amicle company,
- [00:02:09.691]then I transitioned into grad school
- [00:02:12.954]and went to a university of Illinois.
- [00:02:17.370]After leaving there I had an opportunity
- [00:02:20.687]to teach at southern, something happened
- [00:02:24.653]to one of the professors who taught me
- [00:02:27.986]and there was an opening and the chair asked me to come
- [00:02:31.657]so I did and that was in 1987.
- [00:02:35.003]I've been doing this since then.
- [00:02:38.861]Went on and did a PHD at Georgia Tech, here I am.
- [00:02:44.234]Communication skills, I want to cover
- [00:02:47.955]some learning objectives, learn outcomes,
- [00:02:49.693]give in to a presentation, we're gonna have exercise
- [00:02:52.741]and then we'll gonna close it on out.
- [00:02:56.938]In a nut shell, I am trying to convey to you
- [00:03:00.975]how important it is to be able to take your thoughts,
- [00:03:06.807]your knowledge and put it writing properly
- [00:03:11.901]as well as being able to speak it verbally.
- [00:03:17.653]Hopefully, when it's all set and done,
- [00:03:20.616]I will give you some indicators and documents,
- [00:03:23.296]that you will need, when you approach people
- [00:03:26.221]to get the letter of recommendation.
- [00:03:29.114]I'll talk a little bit about the letters of recommendation,
- [00:03:31.919]but more importantly I wanna talk
- [00:03:33.210]about the personal statement.
- [00:03:35.593]Many graduates schools will ask you to put together.
- [00:03:41.091]Then we will have an exercise,
- [00:03:43.565]which where everyone gets most of the session,
- [00:03:46.386]you working on that exercise,
- [00:03:48.716]that I can then critique it
- [00:03:50.774]and give you some feedback before you leave.
- [00:03:56.858]Communication in a nutshell.
- [00:04:00.652]You communicate in two ways, verbally and in writing.
- [00:04:04.223]Is that not correct, for the most part.
- [00:04:07.865]The other thing, that's very fundamental
- [00:04:09.753]is that I am trying to take my ideas,
- [00:04:13.074]I am trying to take some information,
- [00:04:15.183]that I may have gathered and synthesize
- [00:04:17.726]and let you know what my thoughts are about it,
- [00:04:22.006]either from a presentation or some type writing.
- [00:04:25.948]That's what I'm trying to do.
- [00:04:27.571]We've always heard, that the more effective
- [00:04:29.255]you are able to communicate your ideas and thoughts,
- [00:04:32.590]the more productive the work environment will be,
- [00:04:36.226]more of the better life will be for you.
- [00:04:41.233]From the verbal standpoint it's good to always understand
- [00:04:45.295]the message, that I'm trying to convey.
- [00:04:47.195]I knew the day, that I have to talk about
- [00:04:48.650]communication skills, I had to go and think about
- [00:04:51.041]what message am I trying to convey.
- [00:04:54.358]That is once again verbal and written communication.
- [00:05:00.383]How will I know to do it, what things was I gonna take
- [00:05:02.659]into consideration, my tone, my pitch, my pace,
- [00:05:07.668]my flection and able just think, talk to you about,
- [00:05:10.863]hey, when things are currently important to us,
- [00:05:13.518]hold on to it for a moment.
- [00:05:19.786]When things are currently important to hold on to
- [00:05:22.144]the takeaway, there's takeaways in this presentation,
- [00:05:26.253]body language, that you give, listening
- [00:05:30.653]and then who was I gonna be talking to.
- [00:05:36.284]Some of the areas, having distracted mannerism.
- [00:05:40.901]What type of distracting mannerism one can think about,
- [00:05:43.215]that a person can have
- [00:05:44.933]when they're doing verbal communication, what do you think?
- [00:05:49.029]Go for it.
- [00:05:49.862]Looking around the room.
- [00:05:50.971]Looking around the room?
- [00:05:52.607]While he's talking to somebody
- [00:05:53.985]and you're looking around the room.
- [00:05:55.857]Okay, what's another one?
- [00:05:58.989]Keeping your back turned.
- [00:06:00.254]Keeping my back turned.
- [00:06:02.328]You guys, who present, have you ever been in a class,
- [00:06:05.096]where somebody's just up there to read?
- [00:06:11.078]Maybe some grammatical errors, not maintaining eye contact.
- [00:06:16.403]Those things are various to making your presentation
- [00:06:21.770]successful versus not being successful.
- [00:06:27.580]Reminders from the respect to the verbal communication.
- [00:06:30.712]My word usage, which is my grammar,
- [00:06:33.300]making sure, that I'm not use aint and init.
- [00:06:36.736]All of those type of words,
- [00:06:38.325]that are really not part of the English language, right?
- [00:06:44.080]Remember that text message,
- [00:06:45.811]that I had on my presentation earlier?
- [00:06:48.930]We don't wanna bring in those type of things as well,
- [00:06:51.429]which is something, that if you get in a habit of doing
- [00:06:56.722]and can't transition, break away,
- [00:06:58.676]when you are not with your friends,
- [00:06:59.979]compared going to your workplace,
- [00:07:01.647]it can really come back and haunt you.
- [00:07:04.290]Being very precise and focused and then listening,
- [00:07:08.582]particularly the Q and A's side of the house.
- [00:07:11.782]Questions, that they ask, listening to the persons
- [00:07:14.871]after the question and then maybe be sure,
- [00:07:17.391]that you would want to respond precisely with an answer,
- [00:07:21.315]that's good for them.
- [00:07:22.679]Proximity that's for one of the lines
- [00:07:24.061]of am I up in their face or am I a good distance away
- [00:07:27.406]from my audience such that no one feels cringing
- [00:07:32.258]or does it approach me not current.
- [00:07:38.632]Written side of the house, written side of the house.
- [00:07:42.998]Once again, who am I gonna be writing this document for
- [00:07:47.647]or this report for, right?
- [00:07:50.563]Making sure, that we know who that is,
- [00:07:53.250]making sure I have good punctuation, grammar,
- [00:07:56.850]spell check is so important to use.
- [00:08:00.669]Also thesaurus is a very good document to use as well.
- [00:08:06.822]Being able to use words, that definitely convey
- [00:08:10.842]what givings you want to say.
- [00:08:13.146]Then something that is key, writing and rewriting.
- [00:08:19.530]Don't be afraid to make more than one graph of your work,
- [00:08:26.350]don't be afraid to have other people look at your work
- [00:08:31.154]before you make it into a final version.
- [00:08:35.208]Prime and document, go after the worth
- [00:08:37.292]when it comes to communication.
- [00:08:40.274]When it comes to a lot of dismal things,
- [00:08:42.285]cuz if you need the help, reach out for it.
- [00:08:50.064]Here are some reminders.
- [00:08:52.433]Often, often, often what occurs is not apparent.
- [00:09:00.192]Last minute trying to put together an essay
- [00:09:03.604]or put together a report, I'm talking about things,
- [00:09:06.207]that you're gonna be doing when you go into industry
- [00:09:09.569]or even if you go to grad school.
- [00:09:11.672]When you try and do stuff last minute,
- [00:09:13.205]just as Teresa Bradley indicated about trying prepare
- [00:09:15.862]for the GRE from the verbal side of the house,
- [00:09:21.098]trying to learn new verbal, learn new words
- [00:09:25.395]at the last minute, that won't pay off.
- [00:09:29.622]It'll hurt you more, than it will help you.
- [00:09:32.694]Read instructions, what I want to convey is,
- [00:09:39.800]that reading and comforting one to read is so personal.
- [00:09:45.515]It really is very very personal.
- [00:09:48.162]Not just for grad school, but for survival
- [00:09:50.123]wherever you go.
- [00:09:52.371]You got to process what you have read
- [00:09:54.414]and execute on that process, then being precise with books.
- [00:10:06.013]The elements of the application process.
- [00:10:11.238]The resume, when you go and ask someone
- [00:10:16.218]to write you a letter of recommendation
- [00:10:17.832]and you are still in undergrad school,
- [00:10:20.799]here are some items, that you want to provide them.
- [00:10:24.125]You want to provide them with your one page resume.
- [00:10:28.582]That's gonna give them an opportunity to see
- [00:10:32.027]what it is you have done along the lines
- [00:10:34.524]of work experience, along the lines of leadership,
- [00:10:37.833]some of your special skills, that you have acquired,
- [00:10:42.401]your extra curricular activities.
- [00:10:46.340]You want to provide them with a one page resume.
- [00:10:50.063]The other thing you want to provide them
- [00:10:52.264]is an unofficial copy of your transcript.
- [00:10:57.288]I tell you, if you don't have
- [00:11:00.263]those two pieces of information, it's a little difficult
- [00:11:04.113]to write that letter of recommendation for you.
- [00:11:08.111]Those two pieces of recommendation
- [00:11:10.365]helps that person to write a letter of recommendation.
- [00:11:14.988]If you've already graduated, you out there working,
- [00:11:19.586]one thing, that you wanna give them is your resume.
- [00:11:27.353]Still an undergrad, what do we need to get?
- [00:11:31.465]Resume and unofficial transcript.
- [00:11:34.682]When we've already graduated, what do we need to get them?
- [00:11:39.536]Just the resume, alright.
- [00:11:41.861]Since I've already talked a little about
- [00:11:44.562]the letter of recommendation,
- [00:11:47.217]the letter recommendation, particularly,
- [00:11:49.416]when we're trying to give it to grad schools
- [00:11:52.040]and we wanna call back on our faculty members.
- [00:11:55.060]This is something doctor Bellow's talking about.
- [00:11:58.548]Fall back onto our faculty to ask them
- [00:12:01.245]to write me a very strong letter of recommendation.
- [00:12:08.072]Ask a variety of faculties, not just those,
- [00:12:13.584]that you may have taken a class with,
- [00:12:16.235]but maybe also those, that you have done some research for.
- [00:12:20.549]Or you did some works for.
- [00:12:24.505]Don't leave out asking the department chair
- [00:12:27.776]or department head, depending on which one it is
- [00:12:29.897]at your particular institution, even the dean.
- [00:12:35.644]Those are some key personnel to go after
- [00:12:39.306]to ask them to do a letter of recommendation for you.
- [00:12:45.699]They should be able to describe how you can perform
- [00:12:49.869]relative to other folks, that are similar to you.
- [00:13:00.572]That takes care of the letter of recommendation.
- [00:13:02.040]So far, are there any questions about that, yes mam?
- [00:13:16.136]Transcript and your resume?
- [00:13:17.817]You can apply a letter through recommendation
- [00:13:20.352]from places, that you have interned, yes you can.
- [00:13:25.119]Hopefully, where you have interned
- [00:13:28.025]and in what you worked on will tie into the type of program,
- [00:13:33.392]that you're trying to go into,
- [00:13:35.021]because if it doesn't tie to that type of program,
- [00:13:36.985]then you may not wanna use it.
- [00:13:39.206]Make sure you have that type of linkage.
- [00:13:42.887]Any other questions?
- [00:13:46.629]Personal statement.
- [00:13:49.728]This is what's gonna separate the boys from the men
- [00:13:52.203]and the girls from the ladies.
- [00:13:55.470]When this is a part of your packet
- [00:13:57.870]and it's being reviewed by the committee,
- [00:13:59.822]that is gonna making decisions about a,
- [00:14:03.870]awarding you admission and b, awarding you funding,
- [00:14:09.420]you really want to make sure,
- [00:14:11.014]that this stands out and you do a very good job on it.
- [00:14:16.390]Folks such as myself, folks, who are your discipline
- [00:14:21.275]or coming from the program, that you're planning to go into,
- [00:14:25.236]they will have bean bagged on this personal statement,
- [00:14:29.530]that you put together.
- [00:14:32.139]You want to it focus on who you are,
- [00:14:36.870]your clause of character and your research interest.
- [00:14:43.340]How you propose to pursue your graduate studies.
- [00:14:48.046]I do have a hand out, that's gonna take us in four steps
- [00:14:52.573]on how to put together a personal statement.
- [00:14:56.695]After I go to that hand out, then I'm gonna divide you
- [00:14:59.688]into groups of four and you're gonna work on different steps
- [00:15:03.835]of that hand out, such that you turn that into me
- [00:15:08.537]and hopefully everybody's signatures is pretty good.
- [00:15:11.603]You turn that into me and then I will critique them,
- [00:15:15.995]you're gonna give me homework tonight.
- [00:15:18.199]I'll critique them and give you my comments
- [00:15:20.451]and response too.
- [00:15:21.544]Even though I'm not having you put together
- [00:15:24.117]the entire personal statement,
- [00:15:25.511]I'm having put together components to it,
- [00:15:27.449]what I'm trying to get a sense of is
- [00:15:29.965]how you can convey your thoughts for that one step.
- [00:15:40.917]Here are some things, that may happen in the academic
- [00:15:43.372]interviews, remember, I asked a question,
- [00:15:45.308]then maybe you didn't know, that it was,
- [00:15:46.438]who asked that question to doctor Bellows,
- [00:15:48.437]but I raised a question as to is there funding
- [00:15:52.520]for students to come to the university
- [00:15:55.484]and to the university, will the university pay for that?
- [00:15:59.002]She responded than more than likely it will.
- [00:16:03.080]With you or prepare for that academic interview
- [00:16:06.109]or begin to write that personal statement,
- [00:16:08.919]here's 10 things, that you want to look into.
- [00:16:12.728]Why do I just look you guys have been bordered
- [00:16:15.224]with that this morning, why grad school?
- [00:16:18.657]You've seen that on many occasions.
- [00:16:21.904]What discipline am I interested in.
- [00:16:25.495]You gotta do some background research
- [00:16:29.095]and I not really wanna use the terms,
- [00:16:31.710]but you gotta do some background work
- [00:16:34.090]and do some due diligence in terms
- [00:16:35.602]in being able to identify what it is I really want to study
- [00:16:39.402]and why do I wanna study, the institution.
- [00:16:45.052]What are my strengths and weaknesses
- [00:16:46.996]and be very very honest about that.
- [00:16:50.900]What areas am I strong and what areas am I weak at?
- [00:16:55.103]What are my plans after graduate school,
- [00:16:57.905]what type of career am I considering,
- [00:17:00.056]what is purpose values, is this going to help me
- [00:17:04.977]be where I need to be, put me on that subjectivity,
- [00:17:08.472]that is going to put me there three, five years from now.
- [00:17:26.367]With this hand out, let's go through it.
- [00:17:48.134]This page aims to guide, that will help
- [00:17:51.668]with writing the personal statement.
- [00:18:18.936]Let's go through the steps first,
- [00:18:20.292]before we divide into groups.
- [00:18:27.046]Step one
- [00:18:32.334]tells us to talk about the course,
- [00:18:36.932]that you want to study and why.
- [00:18:41.255]One of the things, that I want you to realize
- [00:18:43.641]about the sizes of the boxes on here.
- [00:18:48.758]The very top underneath the headings
- [00:18:50.813]it says, that the size dictates
- [00:18:54.566]how much should be written.
- [00:18:59.305]If we wanna look at how much have written for step one,
- [00:19:04.068]here we're maybe talking about what?
- [00:19:06.062]Three to five sentences?
- [00:19:09.370]Open to that effect, three to five sentences.
- [00:19:14.044]I'm talking about what discipline I'm trying to pursue,
- [00:19:17.844]why I'm trying to pursue it.
- [00:19:20.300]What subject I'm trying to go into,
- [00:19:22.474]what program I'm trying to go into and why.
- [00:19:28.084]Step two, here how have studies and experiences
- [00:19:34.312]prepared me to pursue what I said I want to do in step one.
- [00:19:41.923]We say step one is about three to five sentences,
- [00:19:46.333]so maybe what step two oughta be what?
- [00:19:48.726]What do you think in mind in terms of sentences?
- [00:19:53.579]Let's go 10 to 15, let's go 10 to 15 sentences.
- [00:19:59.732]10 to 15 sentences.
- [00:20:04.351]I wanna bring in my areas of interest, my expertize,
- [00:20:10.564]what initiative did I take, that my teachers
- [00:20:14.812]really didn't have to tell me to do.
- [00:20:18.981]Those are some of the comments and statements,
- [00:20:20.282]that you may be wanted to make about yourself,
- [00:20:23.075]only if they're true now.
- [00:20:26.942]Only if they're true.
- [00:20:31.373]Step three, that box is pretty close to step two?
- [00:20:37.228]Maybe less
- [00:20:38.479]Maybe less?
- [00:20:41.378]What you all else think on this side?
- [00:20:42.714]17.
- [00:20:46.017]Eight to 12.
- [00:20:51.065]We say three to five for step one,
- [00:20:55.168]10 to 15 for step two, eight to 12 for step three.
- [00:21:02.865]Did someone say something?
- [00:21:07.695]Say that again?
- [00:21:08.640]Two or three?
- [00:21:09.921]For which one?
- [00:21:10.754]The last one?
- [00:21:11.587]We're not there yet, rushing my presentation.
- [00:21:17.146]Step three, interests, abilities, experiences you have.
- [00:21:23.590]What makes me a well rounded individual?
- [00:21:27.822]What sets me apart from those I'm competing with,
- [00:21:31.224]that I don't even know, that I'm competing against?
- [00:21:37.821]Just out of curiosity, how many of you
- [00:21:38.839]have brought your resumes with you?
- [00:21:42.722]Hope, that you can pull them out
- [00:21:45.312]and use them to help put this together.
- [00:21:52.809]The other thing, that is suggested is volunteer work,
- [00:21:55.810]that you've done, part time work, that you've done,
- [00:22:00.450]but when you start pulling on those things,
- [00:22:03.017]make sure, that they tie into here again,
- [00:22:07.290]just like I shared with the young lady
- [00:22:08.866]about the letter of recommendation coming from someone
- [00:22:11.690]she worked for as an intern, make sure it ties in
- [00:22:14.859]and can help compliment what it is
- [00:22:18.995]you're trying to pursue in grad school.
- [00:22:22.861]You wanna use all of that to your advantage
- [00:22:25.169]as you are shaping your personal statement.
- [00:22:29.445]What if it doesn't particularly tie into
- [00:22:32.029]what you want to do, but you do your best
- [00:22:35.686]to pull things out of what you've done
- [00:22:39.581]to tailor into what you wanna talk about?
- [00:22:42.863]If it can help enhance your leadership capability,
- [00:22:47.986]if that internship can help do that,
- [00:22:51.153]but doesn't directly say, hey,
- [00:22:53.449]it ties into the fact, that I'm gonna go study structures.
- [00:22:56.354]You can use that in that respect.
- [00:22:59.205]What challenges it brought to you or brought for you?
- [00:23:08.454]Step four, step four says hey,
- [00:23:11.627]I am reemphasizing what it is I have told you
- [00:23:16.029]at the very beginning, what I'm interested in and why
- [00:23:20.667]and, oh by the way, here's my strong closing statement
- [00:23:24.050]about why you should select me to come
- [00:23:27.719]and do my graduate studies at your institution.
- [00:23:35.430]Say that again?
- [00:23:36.980]One to two sentences for that?
- [00:23:40.501]Five to six.
- [00:23:44.137]How many we say for number one?
- [00:23:45.720]Three to four.
- [00:23:46.636]Three to five?
- [00:23:47.795]I think that's step four to be three to five also.
- [00:23:52.658]I think step five ought to be three to five as well.
- [00:23:56.979]We got three to five in step one and four,
- [00:24:00.346]we have 10 to 15 for step two
- [00:24:03.190]and we have 10 to 12 for step three, we all got that?
- [00:24:14.348]We have a total of three, six, nine,
- [00:24:18.598]10, 12, 15 in here, four groups of what?
- [00:24:30.334]Oh we got 16!
- [00:24:32.802]Four groups of four, I'm gonna count them quick.
- [00:24:38.150]Okay, beautiful, whatever group point is in.
- [00:24:45.334]We have more than 16.
- [00:24:47.420]I think it was 17
- [00:24:49.210]I counted 16, three, six, nine, that's 10 right there.
- [00:24:55.114]Two, four, six, okay, sorry, we got 18.
- [00:25:02.901]Quinn, I guess you're off the hook.
- [00:25:08.105]That's almost what four, one have five?
- [00:25:15.332]Break yourself into groups of four
- [00:25:21.312]and what you end up doing is bringing together
- [00:25:24.231]some tables and stuff, that you can sit on both sides.
- [00:25:27.484]Groups of four and then I'll have on group of five.
- [00:25:39.088]Once you're in your group, then I'll tell you what to do.
- [00:25:43.719]Once you're in your group,
- [00:25:44.552]then I'm gonna tell you what to do.
- [00:26:01.308]Cuz you know what?
- [00:26:08.376]There's a five right there.
- [00:26:37.997]Ya'll ready?
- [00:26:46.948]Listen up, here's the instruction.
- [00:26:49.175]What was one of the things, that was key to communication?
- [00:26:53.682]Listen?
- [00:26:57.508]This is my step one, here's my step two,
- [00:27:03.924]here's my step three, here's my step four.
- [00:27:09.901]Step one, step two,
- [00:27:14.290]step three, step four, everybody got that, right?
- [00:27:19.178]Now check this out, step four,
- [00:27:22.800]you must of step one and four, think about it.
- [00:27:28.483]If you go back to the phone chart, everybody,
- [00:27:30.404]step four said it's a reiteration step one.
- [00:27:34.859]That means we gotta gets step one's answer
- [00:27:36.831]and take into four?
- [00:27:38.498]I didn't say that.
- [00:27:40.023]Listen, listen.
- [00:27:43.777]This group up in here will do step one and step four.
- [00:27:51.546]Each individual in the group has to do your own step one.
- [00:27:59.006]Put your name on it, you're gonna turn it into me.
- [00:28:01.358]Each one of you will do step one for your own self.
- [00:28:05.100]Each one of you will do step two for your own self.
- [00:28:08.241]The reason I put you into groups
- [00:28:09.573]is also you can be talking about the kind of share
- [00:28:12.240]different things, that bounce things of and ideas off,
- [00:28:15.678]that help shake what you wanna put together.
- [00:28:19.372]You guys are step three, each one of you
- [00:28:21.682]must put together step three, put your name on it
- [00:28:25.247]and you have to turn it into me.
- [00:28:28.335]Step four, you will do step one and four
- [00:28:32.855]individually, put your name on it and turn into me.
- [00:28:38.857]You know I hate writing, that's why you made me do it.
- [00:28:44.901]Think about how to shape this,
- [00:28:49.527]even though you may not be planning to go to grad school,
- [00:28:54.644]then still engage my exercise.
- [00:29:02.070]We're all doing step one?
- [00:29:07.837]You just do step ten to 15.
- [00:29:12.446]You think about going to a grad school?
- [00:29:20.322]But you can jump right in there
- [00:29:23.140]in what you would really turn in is step two.
- [00:29:27.742]Think how you get to step two,
- [00:29:30.092]but I think you can really just do step two.
- [00:29:46.845]Alright, it is 3:59 and you have
- [00:29:59.358]you have 10 minutes, we switch at 4:10.
- [00:30:06.843]Go for it.
- [00:30:13.331]What's it gonna be your courses say?
- [00:30:20.632]Traffic engineering, alright.
- [00:30:34.011]Go for it.
- [00:30:49.786]You wanna talk about the faculty for class five,
- [00:30:53.418]but even though they aren't class five.
- [00:31:02.618]You might wanna talk about how they will tell you.
- [00:31:40.549]Talk about your interest in doing traffic engineering,
- [00:31:44.389]what type of work you've already done
- [00:31:46.519]or internship you've had and how you.
- [00:32:01.837]Really talk about your area, that you're interested in that
- [00:32:06.527]and then with expertize in this point be.
- [00:32:13.743]Talk about how that course has been beneficial to you
- [00:32:17.507]to prepare for your studies,
- [00:32:20.703]put together some sense on that.
- [00:32:22.935]What about you guys, you good?
- [00:32:28.650]We do have 10 minutes.
- [00:32:32.038]I will critique what you put together.
- [00:32:35.155]You helping them, alright.
- [00:32:39.704]We got a short window though.
- [00:32:51.931]Then we still have to do the evaluation.
- [00:32:58.511]On all the admissions put your name on it
- [00:33:00.748]and here again I will review what you give me.
- [00:33:06.966]If it's not engineering and it's business,
- [00:33:10.763]let's talk a little bit about business.
- [00:33:21.191]This is my conclusion and that's my intro.
- [00:33:26.652]Make sure you put your name on it.
- [00:33:41.698]In conclusion I would like to reiterate
- [00:33:43.983]the importance of the safety of transportation
- [00:33:46.132]to me and my future education.
- [00:33:50.606]That's kind of wordy.
- [00:33:55.804]Here's what I'm interested in, here's my expertize,
- [00:33:58.997]whether my expertize with some classes, that I took
- [00:34:01.759]and there were some topics in that course,
- [00:34:05.124]that I really enjoyed, that is going
- [00:34:08.015]to help build a foundation.
- [00:34:13.528]How you guys doing?
- [00:34:47.477]You don't know what you want to study in graduate.
- [00:34:52.072]Do you have an idea of
- [00:34:56.753]what are the different things, that you consider?
- [00:35:15.820]Injury management itself is a field
- [00:35:18.726]and it's broad
- [00:35:21.995]and speak about injury management, use that term,
- [00:35:27.392]if you want consider injury management
- [00:35:29.259]and then what you have done here, that helps you
- [00:35:35.724]to be prepared for that.
- [00:35:42.758]When you get into injury management,
- [00:35:45.019]they're gonna have different cracks.
- [00:35:58.904]I gotta work on the exercise.
- [00:36:00.321]They're actually doing work.
- [00:36:04.201]That's great.
- [00:36:06.567]Help them shape different parts
- [00:36:08.239]of their personal statement.
- [00:36:21.001]What we did was to go through
- [00:36:22.885]and had them, based on the side,
- [00:36:24.998]they tell me how many sentences did you think
- [00:36:27.569]should go in this box.
- [00:36:29.468]They did that, now i put them into groups
- [00:36:31.882]so they have the box associated with their group
- [00:36:37.091]and write it and I'll critique it tonight.
- [00:36:42.575]They gave me some homework.
- [00:36:45.139]Teachers have homework too.
- [00:36:46.727]There you go, there you go.
- [00:36:50.979]Just do the best you can, it'll be okay.
- [00:37:15.495]I like the confidence.
- [00:37:17.710]Then I put up a concluding slide,
- [00:37:20.426]but I think what's key is for you
- [00:37:22.888]to get through you assignment there.
- [00:37:36.631]You got something for me?
- [00:37:43.370]You're group four and you are ready to turn yours in.
- [00:37:57.178]Try to stay within the number of sentences,
- [00:37:59.572]that we have decided, that was for each step.
- [00:38:11.423]Which will be another test of--
- [00:38:13.704]Listening.
- [00:38:14.787]Stand within the boundaries, one boundary
- [00:38:16.869]was we have to beat the time for the strength,
- [00:38:19.174]the other one is making sure,
- [00:38:20.855]that we stay within that range
- [00:38:23.762]of the number sentences, that we said
- [00:38:26.058]we would apply to each steps, that's assigned to your group.
- [00:38:35.018]Before you leave, you want to fill out a survey
- [00:38:39.307]and when you do, I'll then point and collect them
- [00:38:44.750]and then put it in the brown envelope for me.
- [00:38:49.605]That's what happens when you
- [00:38:54.432]and sit in my session, how about that?
- [00:39:14.864]No, because it's yours and you are making a decision.
- [00:39:25.105]The art of hustling.
- [00:39:41.038]Freddy, how are you doing, you good?
- [00:39:50.561]That's what it is.
- [00:40:02.153]Don't look at my hair.
- [00:40:11.838]In closing, keep writing though,
- [00:40:14.426]but just listen as you write it.
- [00:40:19.084]Self assessment being true about assessing your capabilities
- [00:40:27.481]then sincerity of what it is you wanna pursue
- [00:40:30.101]and why you wanna pursue it.
- [00:40:33.932]Planning and removing the walls of pride and lies.
- [00:40:48.252]Hopefully you have picked up some important information,
- [00:40:51.882]that I know you were quick in going through
- [00:40:57.786]the information, but to me,
- [00:41:00.161]that's a practical exercise,
- [00:41:02.065]really takes this session to another level
- [00:41:06.601]and I'm hoping to provide some comments
- [00:41:10.116]on your assignment you turn into me.
- [00:41:15.218]Hold on to that sheet, that I came out giving you.
- [00:41:19.203]When you do get ready,
- [00:41:20.326]prepare your official personal statement.
- [00:41:33.379]I'll always be here on Saturday.
- [00:41:37.908]Not only myself, but also the staff members here
- [00:41:40.974]and Nancy will be willing
- [00:41:42.762]to critique your personal statements.
- [00:41:50.700]The staff and Nancy will critique
- [00:41:53.985]your personal statements for you.
- [00:42:02.662]If you've done with it,
- [00:42:03.987]go ahead and turn it in, make sure your name is on it.
- [00:42:15.857]Make sure you fill out the survey
- [00:42:17.845]and get that back to me.
- [00:42:47.366]I'll thank you, you give the survey to him
- [00:42:49.489]and I'll take, thank you very much.
