- [00:00:00.318]My name is Jill Hough, and,
- [00:00:02.703]just a brief background.
- [00:00:04.099]I have worked at the Transportation Institute for
- [00:00:07.823]25 years, starting as a graduate research assistant
- [00:00:10.870]and then, during that time went out, and got my PhD,
- [00:00:13.409]took a leave, and did that, and also did some work
- [00:00:15.402]in Washington D.C. with the Federal Transit Administration.
- [00:00:18.601]So my primary focus over the last 12 years
- [00:00:21.197]has been public transportation.
- [00:00:23.088]But prior I've done some work in economic development
- [00:00:25.025]and transportation and logistics,
- [00:00:27.293]and really found a passion for public transportation.
- [00:00:30.479]And, about a year ago, I
- [00:00:34.607]went to Florida, it was a really tough job in February,
- [00:00:38.554]to go to Florida, and spend a week with John Maxwell.
- [00:00:42.227]And, have any of you heard of John Maxwell?
- [00:00:45.117]At all before?
- [00:00:46.414]Okay, well, that's good, new crowd here.
- [00:00:51.029]John Maxwell is a leadership guru.
- [00:00:55.123]He's written about 80 books on leadership
- [00:00:58.396]and, you may have heard of one of them,
- [00:01:00.330]called "The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership."
- [00:01:02.726]Oftentimes people may not remember his name,
- [00:01:05.079]but they've heard of that book.
- [00:01:06.703]And, I highly recommend it, if you have not read it yet.
- [00:01:10.276]It's a very good,
- [00:01:12.849]basic,
- [00:01:14.440]that you can work on your entire life.
- [00:01:16.574](laughs)
- [00:01:17.407]We can always become better at, at leadership.
- [00:01:21.847]So, one of the things that,
- [00:01:25.349]his primary area is leadership,
- [00:01:27.967]but with that, he talks so much about how relationships,
- [00:01:31.721]if you're gonna be in leadership, leadership is influence.
- [00:01:35.728]Nothing more, nothing less, is what he says.
- [00:01:39.043]So, I do want to ask, also, when you were a child,
- [00:01:42.976]to think back, what did you want to be when you grew up?
- [00:01:45.954]Did you want to be a traffic engineer?
- [00:01:48.521]Did you want to be a singer?
- [00:01:51.057]Did you want to be a Olympic athlete?
- [00:01:54.366]President?
- [00:01:56.724]Actor, actress, what did you want to be?
- [00:01:59.153](laughs)
- [00:02:01.086](student speaks off microphone)
- [00:02:04.299]Okay, okay, well, everyone has different, different things,
- [00:02:07.378]but, oftentimes when you ask, you know, somebody,
- [00:02:09.744]you know, would they want to be a singer,
- [00:02:11.148]or a movie star, or, a fireman.
- [00:02:13.314](student speaks off microphone)
- [00:02:14.347]What's that?
- [00:02:15.872]A cowboy, a cowboy, okay, okay, a cowboy, okay.
- [00:02:20.709]Well,
- [00:02:21.542](laughs)
- [00:02:23.024]oftentimes people look to somebody else that they saw,
- [00:02:26.295]and that was kind of what they wanted to become, because
- [00:02:28.619]they saw that person, and that person
- [00:02:31.514]had some influence over that young person,
- [00:02:34.300]or over yourself.
- [00:02:36.449]So, oftentimes, if you think about,
- [00:02:39.555]do you want to have influence?
- [00:02:41.405]Do you want to be able to persuade people to do something?
- [00:02:45.503]Do you want to lead them, so that you can accomplish
- [00:02:49.185]what you want to accomplish?
- [00:02:50.729]So that you can become more successful?
- [00:02:53.569]Or that you can add value to people?
- [00:02:56.366]So,
- [00:02:58.270]leadership,
- [00:02:59.668]one thing John Maxwell says, over and over and over,
- [00:03:03.146]and, I like that it's a concept to really remember,
- [00:03:06.000]is that leadership is influence.
- [00:03:08.774]It's nothing more, it's nothing less.
- [00:03:10.885]And we're gonna go through, oftentimes people have an idea
- [00:03:14.936]that you have to be the CEO to be the leader.
- [00:03:17.865]And that's not true.
- [00:03:20.812]So, our goal, you're here today, well, maybe it's because
- [00:03:24.155]you're getting credit, I understand that, but,
- [00:03:26.411]you hopefully had some interest in increasing
- [00:03:29.116]your influence, and so with that,
- [00:03:31.734]you're gonna want to increase your leadership as well.
- [00:03:38.103]Again, I do want to emphasize, I hope that you would
- [00:03:40.376]consider reading "The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership."
- [00:03:44.043]So let's take an inventory.
- [00:03:46.811]Who do you influence?
- [00:03:48.152]Right now think about, who is it that you influence?
- [00:03:51.514]Is it your peers?
- [00:03:52.840]Other students?
- [00:03:54.570]If you're teaching, are you influencing your students?
- [00:04:02.580]So, do you kind of have a little mental idea,
- [00:04:05.806]with a few people that you're influencing?
- [00:04:08.838]Okay.
- [00:04:10.197]So, there's seven ways that people really go about
- [00:04:13.733]influencing, we're gonna quick cover those.
- [00:04:16.465]We won't spend a lot of time, cause we're gonna get
- [00:04:17.965]to some ways to improve the influence.
- [00:04:20.671]But, how do you influence others?
- [00:04:23.214]Do you do it by force?
- [00:04:24.891]Okay, you know, you have to do this, so.
- [00:04:27.253]You're influencing them, but how long are they really
- [00:04:29.683]gonna listen to you?
- [00:04:30.860]Only while they have to, right?
- [00:04:32.712]Okay, so as soon as the job is done, they're outta there.
- [00:04:36.715]Hopefully to never see you again.
- [00:04:39.867]Okay, through intimidation.
- [00:04:41.658]It's my way, or the highway.
- [00:04:45.354]It's one of the ways that happens.
- [00:04:49.127]Manipulation.
- [00:04:50.313]There's a winner and loser.
- [00:04:55.480]Position.
- [00:04:57.494]Okay, we will follow you because we have to follow you.
- [00:05:01.730]No other reason, we have to do it.
- [00:05:05.446]Exchange.
- [00:05:06.676]Okay, we both win, I'm, you know, let's work together,
- [00:05:09.288]I'm gonna follow you because I'm gonna gain something,
- [00:05:12.099]and, we're both gonna gain something.
- [00:05:14.329]So, I'll follow you.
- [00:05:18.237]Persuasion.
- [00:05:20.888]That happen?
- [00:05:21.769]Somebody can persuade you to follow them?
- [00:05:25.898]There's a reason.
- [00:05:27.935]Right here.
- [00:05:29.816]How do you influence others?
- [00:05:31.210]Do you do it from respect, that because,
- [00:05:35.405]somebody follows you because they respect you.
- [00:05:39.461]Ultimately, I think this is one of the main reasons
- [00:05:42.057]we want to have influence,
- [00:05:45.957]is because people actually respect us.
- [00:05:52.797]Quick, how many do you influence?
- [00:05:55.270]Okay, so we mentioned, do you influence,
- [00:05:58.688]here's an example of a mom,
- [00:06:01.177]you know, influencing a little child.
- [00:06:03.697]And then of course, we have some of these people who,
- [00:06:06.449]we're not gonna spend a lot of time on, but,
- [00:06:08.913]we have some of these movie stars, and people who,
- [00:06:11.952]influence a lot of others.
- [00:06:13.971]And,
- [00:06:17.073]I think, one thing to think about, too, is,
- [00:06:20.644]how many do you influence, and, are you influencing
- [00:06:23.263]them for good, or for bad?
- [00:06:25.658]Are you influencing them for positive, or negative results?
- [00:06:31.920]Why do you influence people?
- [00:06:34.298]This is something that's so key.
- [00:06:36.278]And when I think about you going out, you know, as students,
- [00:06:39.496]you're gonna be going out into the workforce,
- [00:06:43.341]and, particularly with the graduate degrees that you have,
- [00:06:47.839]you're gonna become leaders.
- [00:06:49.926]And, you're gonna have the technical knowledge,
- [00:06:52.105]I think it's so important to be sure to work
- [00:06:55.060]on the person skills, and the leadership skills,
- [00:06:58.805]because, you will be moving, most likely, okay,
- [00:07:02.992]some people may say, well no, I don't want to move
- [00:07:05.095]into a higher position, I want to stay and do this,
- [00:07:08.693]and I don't want to interact with any people.
- [00:07:11.268]Rarely will that ever happen.
- [00:07:13.116]You will interact with people, and, it's nice
- [00:07:17.086]to be able to have some people skills.
- [00:07:19.885]One of the key things, too, is trust.
- [00:07:23.325]You want to be able to influence people, but they want,
- [00:07:27.650]to do it for good.
- [00:07:29.734]People want to be able to trust you, you want to be
- [00:07:31.674]a trustworthy person, and, again,
- [00:07:34.891]try to influence people for the good.
- [00:07:41.716]Okay, where do you influence others?
- [00:07:43.713]You're doing it right now at the university,
- [00:07:47.138]is one of the places, well,
- [00:07:49.248]doesn't this look like this room?
- [00:07:50.945](laughs)
- [00:07:52.148](audience chatter)
- [00:07:53.493]Yeah, so where do you do it?
- [00:07:57.145]Again, I want to emphasize, it's not, you don't wait
- [00:08:00.495]until you're the CEO, the CFO,
- [00:08:03.731]the president of the university.
- [00:08:05.657]You don't wait until then.
- [00:08:07.296]You, as a graduate student right now, are faculty,
- [00:08:10.231]are influencing people, but,
- [00:08:15.697]what are some ways to improve
- [00:08:18.430]the ways you influence, so that people can recognize you
- [00:08:21.695]as a leader?
- [00:08:23.838]Integrity.
- [00:08:26.189]Having integrity.
- [00:08:27.714]Think about somebody that you know, and, when you first
- [00:08:31.317]meet them, you know, you can think, okay,
- [00:08:34.408]well this is a good person.
- [00:08:36.001]But, it really takes, over time, for you to see,
- [00:08:39.685]wow, okay, they said they were gonna do this,
- [00:08:41.472]and they did it.
- [00:08:42.757]They did this.
- [00:08:43.913]It's kind of like, you see somebody grow,
- [00:08:47.344]and, you can think somebody has integrity, but,
- [00:08:49.897]it's really proven over time.
- [00:08:51.938]So,
- [00:08:54.121]Webster's New Universal Unabridged Dictionary
- [00:08:56.873]describes integrity as an adherence to moral and ethical
- [00:09:00.336]principles, soundness of moral character and honesty.
- [00:09:04.647]So,
- [00:09:06.851]oftentimes, people will be influenced by what you say,
- [00:09:12.401]because they see that you're a person of integrity.
- [00:09:14.820]So, one of the things I also want to point out is,
- [00:09:17.260]when we go through this, the 10 ways to increase
- [00:09:20.168]your influence, if you're taking notes, you can write
- [00:09:23.498]the word "influences" down the left,
- [00:09:26.919]and integrity is the first word there.
- [00:09:31.136]Nurture.
- [00:09:32.498]Okay, so,
- [00:09:36.247]does somebody influence you if they're bossy
- [00:09:38.074]and telling you what to do, you know,
- [00:09:40.157]you sometimes don't really want to do what they,
- [00:09:41.929]what they're telling you to do.
- [00:09:43.230]But somebody who tends to be more nurturing,
- [00:09:45.560]let's say there's a new student who comes in,
- [00:09:47.164]and doesn't really know their way around,
- [00:09:49.654]and you jump in, and you help them, and you show them
- [00:09:52.651]the ropes, you're influencing them.
- [00:09:55.003]Because, your nurturing part is helping to influence them.
- [00:09:59.303]That's just one example.
- [00:10:01.403]And something that you can probably all relate to,
- [00:10:03.691]being here with new students.
- [00:10:06.261]Okay, faith.
- [00:10:08.795]So, this can be a way that,
- [00:10:12.015]how many of you had somebody believe in you?
- [00:10:16.148]Almost every, almost everybody in here,
- [00:10:18.895]close to it, in a sense it can be, you may not
- [00:10:22.164]quite know that you can do something.
- [00:10:24.023]You wanna do it, you might be a little fearful.
- [00:10:26.605]But if somebody comes and shows faith in you,
- [00:10:30.234]you know, I know you can do that.
- [00:10:31.469]I know you can finish your PhD, I know you can do this.
- [00:10:33.973]Now, not just blindly,
- [00:10:37.356]with somebody who has no skills, and they come in
- [00:10:38.915]as a freshman, and you're saying, oh, I know
- [00:10:40.444]you can go get your PhD, you know, that's not it.
- [00:10:43.006]But the sense of having faith and believing in you,
- [00:10:46.976]so, you increase
- [00:10:49.582]your influence when you have faith in someone.
- [00:10:53.354]Does that make sense?
- [00:10:54.980]Okay.
- [00:10:57.682]Also, listening, okay.
- [00:11:00.757]Think of it as a ladder.
- [00:11:04.162]Do you like it when somebody listens to you?
- [00:11:06.897]Or do you prefer when they ignore you when you're talking?
- [00:11:10.206]Okay, look at the speaker.
- [00:11:12.387]Doesn't that show that you're listening, when you
- [00:11:14.282]actually look at them?
- [00:11:16.978]Ask questions.
- [00:11:18.099]Make sure that shows that you're paying attention.
- [00:11:22.533]Don't interrupt.
- [00:11:23.366]I don't know if you have anyone interrupt you
- [00:11:25.297]when you're speaking, but,
- [00:11:27.974]don't change the subject.
- [00:11:29.785]See how this is a ladder.
- [00:11:31.543]Emotion, make sure also, as a leader,
- [00:11:34.184]you kind of understand what's going on in the situation.
- [00:11:39.015]Responsive listening.
- [00:11:40.843]I mean, when you know that somebody's listening to you,
- [00:11:44.884]you tend to
- [00:11:47.411]engage with them.
- [00:11:48.743]If somebody quits listening to you,
- [00:11:50.633]they're not being very responsive,
- [00:11:52.135]you just kind of go your own way.
- [00:11:55.351]So, the best thing, focus on the other person.
- [00:12:00.148]Another is to understand.
- [00:12:01.870]So, if you can't understand people,
- [00:12:06.268]it's gonna be really hard to work with them.
- [00:12:08.683]And so, one of the things that we find, too,
- [00:12:10.989]at a university, is the cultural differences.
- [00:12:14.666]And so that makes it very unique, when,
- [00:12:18.327]you have to work more, or you can accomplish more,
- [00:12:22.583]when you work together to better understand one another.
- [00:12:26.039]And the leader takes that initiative,
- [00:12:29.566]to understand the people around them.
- [00:12:35.043]Try to see things from their perspective.
- [00:12:37.374]That's a, something that hopefully you're doing already,
- [00:12:41.622]but it can be, and it's a skill to work on.
- [00:12:43.958]How can you look at something from
- [00:12:46.194]somebody else's perspective?
- [00:12:48.778]A leader also enlarges others.
- [00:12:52.665]So, you want to increase your influence,
- [00:12:56.430]grow yourself.
- [00:12:57.865]That's what you're doing right now.
- [00:12:59.413]Here at the university, you are growing yourself, and,
- [00:13:02.962]most of the skills that you're probably learning
- [00:13:04.948]are the technical skills, which are crucial,
- [00:13:07.726]for your career.
- [00:13:09.943]I also suggest that, in addition to continuing to grow
- [00:13:14.058]in those technical skills, are learned,
- [00:13:16.944]some of the other skills, the leadership skills.
- [00:13:19.533]The interpersonal skills.
- [00:13:21.164]And continue to grow in them.
- [00:13:22.602]You can't just say, well you know what, I took this
- [00:13:25.094]leadership class, I'm good.
- [00:13:27.151]I'm good for the whole rest of my life.
- [00:13:28.554]I don't need to learn anything else.
- [00:13:30.852]You know, but grow, because when you grow yourself,
- [00:13:35.563]you're able to grow others.
- [00:13:36.724]You can't give what you don't have.
- [00:13:38.692]Right, so, another book that I want to mention,
- [00:13:42.461]that is probably one of my absolute favorites
- [00:13:45.045]of John Maxwell's, is "The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth."
- [00:13:49.507]It will change your life.
- [00:13:52.131]And one of the reasons is, because now, you're
- [00:13:53.868]in the university, so, you take classes,
- [00:13:57.060]you have a curriculum, you finish it, right?
- [00:14:00.665]Okay, very good.
- [00:14:02.067]People do that.
- [00:14:03.636]But do you have a plan for when you finish school?
- [00:14:07.212]Do all the sudden, do you quit growing?
- [00:14:10.229]Some people do, some people never pick up another book.
- [00:14:13.371]Some people choose to be like,
- [00:14:14.509]I'm good, I graduated, I'm done.
- [00:14:16.887]And there's so much more when you continue to grow,
- [00:14:19.861]and when you see other leaders, they're people who grow.
- [00:14:23.661]They're people who read, they're people who stay,
- [00:14:25.914]stay ahead on things.
- [00:14:29.486]Navigation, navigates, okay.
- [00:14:33.233]So, if you have a problem,
- [00:14:36.319]is there somebody that you may go to
- [00:14:37.884]that can help you through the situation?
- [00:14:40.725]Maybe somebody who's been through that before?
- [00:14:44.023]That's somebody who has experience?
- [00:14:47.833]Maybe it's even somebody who knows somebody.
- [00:14:49.944]You know, well I'm gonna listen to this person,
- [00:14:51.651]and what they have to say, because you know what,
- [00:14:53.170]they're really close to John Maxwell, and I think
- [00:14:55.824]John Maxwell's really great, but,
- [00:14:58.222]I've talked to him, but they really know him.
- [00:15:01.604]You know, there's, there's people that you can look to,
- [00:15:05.132]and, what I'm encouraging you to do, is as you have
- [00:15:08.353]your experiences as well, you can help other students,
- [00:15:12.852]you can help other people, you can help them navigate
- [00:15:16.333]through the system, and that also increases your influence.
- [00:15:23.507]So we also have connects.
- [00:15:26.648]Okay, so, do you like to work with people
- [00:15:29.610]that you connect with?
- [00:15:34.211]Yes?
- [00:15:35.373]I mean, do any of you like to work
- [00:15:36.830]with people you don't connect with?
- [00:15:39.883]I know I don't, and I don't look forward to it.
- [00:15:42.953]So, one of the things, too, to think about is,
- [00:15:46.786]how can you connect with people?
- [00:15:49.667]Taking the leader, tends to take the initiative.
- [00:15:53.289]And, okay, how can I create a relationship with this person?
- [00:16:01.161]You know, you think it through, how can I connect with them?
- [00:16:04.853]I see that they're going through,
- [00:16:06.143]and so, I can help them through this, I mean,
- [00:16:09.416]that's kind of the navigation part too,
- [00:16:11.428]but you also have to connect with them.
- [00:16:13.316]Talk with them, do, are these skills that you feel
- [00:16:15.803]that you've worked at, at all?
- [00:16:17.542]Or do you ever find it difficult to connect with people?
- [00:16:21.962]Not that you're gonna connect with everybody.
- [00:16:23.772]With leadership being influence.
- [00:16:25.987]And so,
- [00:16:29.335]most of the things I'm talking about, I'm gonna throw in
- [00:16:31.439]other stuff, cause I've read a lot of John Maxwell's books.
- [00:16:33.752]But, here is the book "Becoming a Person of Influence."
- [00:16:37.820]And, one thing I want to say, I'm going through the material
- [00:16:39.964]really really fast, because this is really
- [00:16:43.161]an eight hour workshop.
- [00:16:45.020](laughs)
- [00:16:46.187]Or more, and what I'm trying to do, is at least
- [00:16:49.188]give you a preview, and, go through those 10 items,
- [00:16:54.105]so that you can keep them in your mind.
- [00:16:56.153]You know, think through influences, okay,
- [00:16:57.742]I need to have integrity, I need to nurture,
- [00:16:59.758]I need to, you know, a quick way.
- [00:17:01.845]This, we can spend an hour, easily, unpacking
- [00:17:06.722]each of these items, and still have a lot more
- [00:17:09.332]to talk about.
- [00:17:10.790]At NDSU I do some, what's called masterminds, and,
- [00:17:15.990]they'll be people who sign up, and they've filled up
- [00:17:18.362]in less than two hours, three classes, and,
- [00:17:21.912]we go through a book, and we spend an hour each week
- [00:17:25.227]discussing the topic and unpacking it, and,
- [00:17:27.714]how is this relating to you?
- [00:17:29.195]And it's really good, so, I encourage you,
- [00:17:31.590]if you can pick up these books and spend some time in it,
- [00:17:33.727]it's really well worth it.
- [00:17:35.622]But,
- [00:17:38.058]growing in leadership.
- [00:17:40.132]One of these processes that they do, is there's this
- [00:17:43.974]little quiz, and you can try to find out where are you
- [00:17:46.577]in your leadership, you know, and you'll score
- [00:17:48.632]between a one and a 10.
- [00:17:51.323]And, there's questions, and,
- [00:17:53.530]and it's interesting to go through it at the beginning,
- [00:17:56.126]and then go through it later.
- [00:17:57.621]And what they'll call it is, having a leadership lid.
- [00:18:00.181]So think about a lid going on something, you know,
- [00:18:02.405]on a pot, and, so,
- [00:18:05.271]they'll talk about, okay, you know, my leadership skills,
- [00:18:07.197]I'm like a two.
- [00:18:08.832]Well, the nice thing to know, is that you don't have to stay
- [00:18:12.580]at that level, but there's different ways and practices
- [00:18:16.110]that you can work on improving those skills.
- [00:18:18.453]And that's, that's really good and it's
- [00:18:21.861]good for you to learn now, because it's something
- [00:18:23.878]you can work on through your career.
- [00:18:26.107]So, connecting with people.
- [00:18:28.337]Now, because of that, you may have, it's a little bit easier
- [00:18:31.854]for you, your leadership skills may be higher at,
- [00:18:36.076]you know, there's several things, but that,
- [00:18:37.920]it might be at a seven, might be at a six.
- [00:18:39.997]Might be at an eight.
- [00:18:41.541]Where, somebody who has a harder time connecting,
- [00:18:44.804]their leadership skills may be lower,
- [00:18:47.562]but it doesn't mean they have to stay there.
- [00:18:49.423]You can work at trying to figure out,
- [00:18:51.171]how can I connect with somebody?
- [00:18:52.939]What is that that we have in common?
- [00:18:55.168]And, how can I work with them?
- [00:19:04.418]Also, empowers.
- [00:19:07.216]Do you like to work with somebody who,
- [00:19:10.622]lets you go off and do things?
- [00:19:12.350]Or, do you want somebody to,
- [00:19:14.918]look over your shoulder all the time to make sure
- [00:19:16.679]you're doing it correct?
- [00:19:19.351]That's what you like?
- [00:19:20.199](laughs)
- [00:19:22.710]Now, there's, there's some people who
- [00:19:25.465]want somebody continuously checking on them.
- [00:19:28.865]I'm suspecting that, because you are graduate students,
- [00:19:31.695]you tend not to be that way.
- [00:19:34.662]I could be wrong, but, those that I've worked with
- [00:19:37.061]have shown me they like to kind of run and do things.
- [00:19:40.455]And, a big thing is to be able to empower people.
- [00:19:43.751]So, we can't do everything ourselves.
- [00:19:46.176]Think if you're working on a group project
- [00:19:47.543]with other students, and you're the lead, you know,
- [00:19:50.552]typically, you'll have a lead.
- [00:19:53.450]You'll want to, hopefully, empower others to go,
- [00:19:57.184]okay, you take care of the data, you take care of this,
- [00:19:59.666]and let's all come back together.
- [00:20:01.208]You're empowering people to do what they're good at.
- [00:20:04.300]Or to improve their skills in certain areas.
- [00:20:06.616]We can't do everything ourselves.
- [00:20:09.337]We want to accomplish more, and so one of the ways
- [00:20:12.291]to do that is to empower people to work on other projects.
- [00:20:18.368]So, just like in a business,
- [00:20:20.988]where there's the CFO, the CEO,
- [00:20:24.367]I mean they all kind of specialize.
- [00:20:25.795]They can't do everything.
- [00:20:27.173]That's why they have others working.
- [00:20:29.641]Okay, so we went through, this is the 10th now.
- [00:20:35.230]Reproduces.
- [00:20:37.435]So, do you know that 80% of leaders attract followers?
- [00:20:42.616]That makes sense, they just bring along people,
- [00:20:44.593]attract people who are gonna do the work.
- [00:20:47.460]It's okay, we need to get the work done, so.
- [00:20:50.557]But, so as you're thinking about improving your leadership,
- [00:20:55.795]and your influence,
- [00:20:58.593]who are you influencing?
- [00:21:00.624]Who are some of the people that you're influencing?
- [00:21:03.248]Are you influencing those people who are just gonna
- [00:21:05.330]come along and you say, you know I need you to collect
- [00:21:07.131]this data, so collect this data.
- [00:21:09.235]Okay, and they'll collect the data.
- [00:21:11.087]They don't do anything else, but they collect the data.
- [00:21:15.755]There can also be, so, leaders,
- [00:21:19.829]10% of leaders attract other leaders.
- [00:21:22.910]So, if you have, you have your leadership skills, so,
- [00:21:26.945]now, you attract somebody who collects the data,
- [00:21:30.841]but, they also take a little bit of extra initiative
- [00:21:33.537]and go, look what I did with the data, look at
- [00:21:35.480]what this is saying, look what this is showing.
- [00:21:38.327]They're showing a little bit more leadership,
- [00:21:40.165]taking a little bit more initiative.
- [00:21:42.404]Are those the kinds of people that
- [00:21:43.525]you want to surround yourself with?
- [00:21:47.734]And then, this is very interesting, is,
- [00:21:51.279]5% of leaders produce leaders.
- [00:21:56.133]And so,
- [00:21:58.161]what I would,
- [00:22:00.258]hope to suggest to you, is as you're working on your skills,
- [00:22:05.077]on your influencing skills, on your leadership skills,
- [00:22:09.037]keep in mind, who do you want to attract?
- [00:22:12.195]Who do you want to influence?
- [00:22:14.674]Do you want to influence somebody who's just gonna
- [00:22:17.272]get the job done, you know, they're just gonna do it.
- [00:22:20.247]Are you gonna show your skills in the sense of
- [00:22:23.956]connecting with them, helping them, showing your integrity.
- [00:22:27.723]Or are you just like, go collect that data.
- [00:22:29.726]Go administer that survey.
- [00:22:31.700]You know, no, you want to influence them,
- [00:22:34.116]take them along on the trip with you.
- [00:22:37.667]Work at, I see it as becoming,
- [00:22:43.025]do professors want to bring along, and encourage,
- [00:22:46.686]it can be other professors,
- [00:22:49.847]it can be people who, they can see something
- [00:22:52.586]in a student, who will grow, continue to grow,
- [00:22:56.381]continue to grow, yeah.
- [00:22:58.495]One of the things, is, particularly,
- [00:23:02.026]it can be because of your style,
- [00:23:04.062]and you can recognize other leaders, and bring those
- [00:23:06.672]other leaders around, who want to be leaders,
- [00:23:09.958]you're gonna find, that's who's gonna mostly
- [00:23:11.990]be surrounding you.
- [00:23:13.662]There will be, and, you know what,
- [00:23:16.755]we need followers.
- [00:23:18.060]We need followers, and so I'm not saying, you know,
- [00:23:20.021]don't attract followers, because we need that.
- [00:23:23.360]But, also be looking for those other people.
- [00:23:27.585]John Maxwell, one of the things he really talks about,
- [00:23:31.384]and, he started
- [00:23:33.954]the John Maxwell Team, that's what I'm,
- [00:23:35.724]I'm part of that group, back in 2011.
- [00:23:39.567]And, one of the reasons was, he wanted to focus on
- [00:23:42.048]creating other leaders.
- [00:23:44.411]And so, taking an actual initiative towards, okay,
- [00:23:48.416]let's start creating and be,
- [00:23:51.967]doing this in another way.
- [00:23:54.031]At one of his businesses, before he got there,
- [00:23:58.400]he was, for those who, John Maxwell was, before he,
- [00:24:03.173]gosh, he's been doing this for the last 20-some years,
- [00:24:05.553]but prior to that, he was a pastor.
- [00:24:09.106]And, in the church that he was at,
- [00:24:11.124]he would talk about, he went and he took over like,
- [00:24:14.312]the 10th largest church in the U.S. in San Diego.
- [00:24:17.957]And, when he went to that, that location,
- [00:24:21.144]it was made up, the pastor there,
- [00:24:24.272]had been a really good singer.
- [00:24:27.124]And so, there were, it was really known for its music.
- [00:24:31.958]Okay, because that's when it started to attract.
- [00:24:34.821]Well then, John's gift is not music or singing.
- [00:24:39.134]So he said by the time, so when he went in and took it over,
- [00:24:42.204]by the time he left, it was full of leaders.
- [00:24:45.014]Because he attracted leaders.
- [00:24:46.323]Long way to answer your question.
- [00:24:49.218]Okay, so increasing your influence.
- [00:24:51.534]Here's one of the things that I wanted to make sure,
- [00:24:55.019]again, each of these hour-long or more,
- [00:24:58.345]but, having integrity, really working on,
- [00:25:01.982]you know, catching yourself, if you feel that,
- [00:25:05.092]wow, I'm doing something that wouldn't show integrity.
- [00:25:07.794]Or, I'm developing a class, that I'm gonna actually
- [00:25:10.415]be teaching next semester, at NDSU and it's called
- [00:25:12.966]Leadership With Ethics and Academic Conduct.
- [00:25:15.371]And so I've done some training on ethics, and,
- [00:25:19.073]I take the class through ways to identify
- [00:25:21.639]different tests, and so I'll say,
- [00:25:25.006]okay, if you don't want it on the front page
- [00:25:27.937]of the paper, don't do it.
- [00:25:30.651]If you don't want your mom to know, don't do it, okay?
- [00:25:34.288]So that's kind of the easy check for integrity.
- [00:25:40.419]Nurture, you know, how can you be more nurturing?
- [00:25:42.962]And again, you know, think of it as helping people.
- [00:25:46.897]How can I help someone who needs this help?
- [00:25:49.111]How can I help a fellow student come in?
- [00:25:52.585]Faith, how can I show faith in someone,
- [00:25:55.628]to help them along, who may have a lower self-esteem,
- [00:25:58.733]or someone who thinks they can't do it?
- [00:26:01.152]How can I show them?
- [00:26:02.759]How can I be a better listener?
- [00:26:05.228]How can I really listen, because so many times,
- [00:26:07.879]people want to be listened to.
- [00:26:11.133]How can I do that?
- [00:26:13.589]Understand, how can I have a better understanding,
- [00:26:15.876]instead of just worrying about me, and what I want to do,
- [00:26:18.918]as a leader, an influence, you need to understand people.
- [00:26:22.203]What motivates them?
- [00:26:24.506]How can you, and, not to manipulate,
- [00:26:29.011]but to understand, again, to try to help.
- [00:26:32.518]Enlarge.
- [00:26:33.568]How can I enlarge people?
- [00:26:34.485]How can, I'm gonna continue to grow, as a person,
- [00:26:37.650]so that I can grow other people, and influence them.
- [00:26:42.055]I'm gonna navigate, how can I navigate?
- [00:26:44.030]I see this person having this problem over here,
- [00:26:46.562]I've been down that road, or I know somebody else
- [00:26:48.878]who's been down that road, and I can help them.
- [00:26:51.417]I can help them navigate through this situation.
- [00:26:54.734]I can connect with people.
- [00:26:56.807]I need to work at connecting with people,
- [00:26:58.576]how can I connect with them, so that we can
- [00:27:00.669]have a better project?
- [00:27:03.024]Find the common interest.
- [00:27:05.791]Empower, how can I help, you know.
- [00:27:08.517]You work on this, I'm gonna work on this.
- [00:27:11.248]We'll get it done together.
- [00:27:13.713]And, reproducing others.
- [00:27:15.794]So, that one is really a lifelong process,
- [00:27:19.988]I think at the end.
- [00:27:21.392]You guys are probably experiencing that a whole lot more,
- [00:27:24.382]now with the work that you've been doing, and,
- [00:27:26.037]being professors longer,
- [00:27:28.403](student speaks off microphone)
- [00:27:30.715](laughs)
- [00:27:31.739]first started out.
- [00:27:35.514](student speaks off microphone)
- [00:27:39.653]Okay, well thank you.
- [00:27:41.201](audience applauds)
