- [00:00:02.083]My name's Harriet and I'm a microbiology major.
- [00:00:05.011]Microbiology is the study of microbes
- [00:00:06.723]like bacteria, fungi, archaea.
- [00:00:09.381]They're important in industry, in making
- [00:00:12.739]food and also they're causative agents of disease.
- [00:00:18.763]I got into research my Freshman year.
- [00:00:21.283]I was interested in Doctor Wilson's
- [00:00:22.363]research because it had such a heavy focus on genetics.
- [00:00:25.403]That's because that's one of my
- [00:00:26.539]favorite subjects in biology, and also I
- [00:00:28.981]really liked the fact that I got to
- [00:00:31.134]not only work with Doctor Wilson,
- [00:00:32.694]but also work with the graduate
- [00:00:34.014]students and learn their process
- [00:00:35.894]and be exposed to different types of
- [00:00:38.072]careers that you can do in microbiology.
- [00:00:41.883]My lab, we work with the fungus that
- [00:00:43.825]causes rice blast disease.
- [00:00:46.015]This research is exciting because
- [00:00:47.374]it has a huge global impact.
- [00:00:50.305]The work that we're doing can improve crop productivity,
- [00:00:53.265]especially in rice and it can be
- [00:00:55.243]used to further research in cancer.
- [00:00:59.532]Working as an undergraduate researcher
- [00:01:01.731]helps you prepare for leadership roles.
- [00:01:04.293]Since I'm a senior, I'm able to help
- [00:01:06.123]train some of the other undergrads
- [00:01:07.835]with the different laboratory techniques.
- [00:01:10.523]I think it's awesome that they've
- [00:01:11.945]trusted me with this responsibility
- [00:01:13.614]to help teach other students.
- [00:01:16.038]I'm in two honor societies.
- [00:01:18.665]They're both had GPA requirements,
- [00:01:21.068]and I was really proud that I was
- [00:01:21.963]able to meet those requirements and
- [00:01:23.475]be a part of a club that focuses
- [00:01:26.204]on service and academic excellence.
- [00:01:29.093]I really appreciate having that
- [00:01:30.603]opportunity to volunteer and help out the community.
- [00:01:33.905]Go into like birth tests.
- [00:01:35.123]There's lot of opportunities in microbiology.
- [00:01:36.854]You can do research, you can teach.
- [00:01:38.999]For me, I'm premed, so it gave me
- [00:01:40.972]a lot of classes that would prepare me for medical school.
- [00:01:43.910]I think that being a microbiology major,
- [00:01:46.060]gives you a more well rounded view
- [00:01:47.780]of science and I think that anybody
- [00:01:49.172]who has an interest in science should do it.
