- [00:00:00.000]I thank you all so very much for allowing me to be here.
- [00:00:04.352]I think this is an amazing program.
- [00:00:07.578]Just to be amongst a different group
- [00:00:09.546]of people has been enlightening for me.
- [00:00:13.743]As you read I am a business professor,
- [00:00:15.879]I do business, I love business, that's my passion.
- [00:00:19.548]So when I realized that I was coming to a civil engineering,
- [00:00:25.303](chuckles) area, I said, "Okay, well
- [00:00:29.429]"how am I going to correlate the two?"
- [00:00:31.666]But realizing that economic development
- [00:00:34.350]is the base for business and so because civil engineering,
- [00:00:38.736]business is the foundation for all practices,
- [00:00:42.027]I said, "That's where I fit in."
- [00:00:43.492]So I am going to begin with telling you
- [00:00:46.693]a little bit about myself and then we're going
- [00:00:48.400]to get into me discussing future logistics
- [00:00:52.577]and how it applies to you, alright?
- [00:00:54.928]So I need you all's undivided attention,
- [00:00:57.202]I know I'm the last one, however, I believe
- [00:01:00.336]there is some pertinent information.
- [00:01:01.953]So get your questions ready 'cause
- [00:01:03.699]we're gonna have a lot to discuss, okay?
- [00:01:06.463]Alrighty.
- [00:01:09.022]So you know when they read your bio they tell you,
- [00:01:11.300]I mean, they say all these amazing things about who you are
- [00:01:15.212]and what you do and so on and so forth
- [00:01:16.826]but they don't say how you were able
- [00:01:18.414]to get to where you are.
- [00:01:20.247]So if you look at my bio they'll say,
- [00:01:22.762]"Well she started at Lincoln University in 1993,
- [00:01:26.309]"but she didn't graduate until 2000."
- [00:01:29.003]What happened in-between there?
- [00:01:31.500]Well (laughs), who said something, what as that?
- [00:01:34.978]Life.
- [00:01:35.811]Life, life happens, absolutely.
- [00:01:38.251]So when I got to college everything was great, right?
- [00:01:41.350]Initially starting off everything was great.
- [00:01:43.791]I was a nursing, I was declared a nursing major,
- [00:01:47.909]because my parents they say, "Andrea, you're gonna be
- [00:01:49.595]"a phenomenal nursing major,
- [00:01:51.177]"you're gonna be great at nursing.
- [00:01:52.642]"You're so good with people and you smile
- [00:01:54.829]"and your nice", and so on and so forth.
- [00:01:57.243]But when I got to school my smile and my attitude
- [00:02:01.696]didn't match up with my grades, right?
- [00:02:04.519]So after going to school for my parents for two years,
- [00:02:09.953]because, you know, your parents they tell you
- [00:02:11.208]what your degree should be, well my parents did.
- [00:02:13.843]They say, "Andrea, let's do this, I think you'd be great."
- [00:02:16.864]Well I didn't have the passion for it.
- [00:02:18.938]I didn't have the desire to do it,
- [00:02:21.580]and then I was not passing the science classes.
- [00:02:24.621]But one thing I was good at was partying, right?
- [00:02:28.283]So I learned how to party really good
- [00:02:30.141]because that was a distraction for me.
- [00:02:32.014]It helped me to kind of get over the hump.
- [00:02:35.887]Well because my parents were paying for my tuition
- [00:02:37.943]out of pocket my dad realized that,
- [00:02:40.793]"Hey, you're getting Ds and Fs in these science classes,
- [00:02:44.046]"so I am going to bring you home."
- [00:02:46.322]And so for a year and a half I had to stay home,
- [00:02:50.823]my parents came and picked me up from college.
- [00:02:53.830]I had to stay home for a year and a half.
- [00:02:56.017]During that timeframe my dad made me work,
- [00:02:59.146]and go to community college.
- [00:03:01.252]So while I as at work, I had to work at a plant,
- [00:03:04.768]I was working at Capri Sun.
- [00:03:07.734]At this warehouse, this Capri Sun warehouse,
- [00:03:10.280]I was working with popsicles and the actual Capri Suns,
- [00:03:14.436]boxing 'em up, sending 'em along the conveyor belt,
- [00:03:16.947]so on and so forth.
- [00:03:18.206]Well, it was 120 degrees in this warehouse.
- [00:03:24.092]Now me being the person that I am
- [00:03:25.995]I had a certain expectation of life.
- [00:03:28.164]I was extremely spoiled, daddy's girl, the whole nine.
- [00:03:32.546]And so my dad he made we work every day,
- [00:03:34.844]I had to be at work at 5:30,
- [00:03:36.799]I didn't get off work until four.
- [00:03:38.636]And he was gracious enough to take me,
- [00:03:41.920]make sure I was there at 5:30, on time every day,
- [00:03:45.581]and that he was there when I got off work as well.
- [00:03:48.662]And so he would always greet me and say,
- [00:03:50.326]"Hey Andrea, how was your day?"
- [00:03:51.759]It sucked, I hated this job.
- [00:03:54.120]So eventually I started talking to the people around me
- [00:04:00.204]and this was their primary job.
- [00:04:02.151]And so they said, "I gotta go pay rent.
- [00:04:04.336]"I have to pay my electric bill,
- [00:04:05.962]"I have to do all these things outta this paycheck."
- [00:04:09.201]And so that's when the light bulb
- [00:04:10.949]clicked on for me to say, "Hey, I have to go back to school,
- [00:04:15.775]"and I have to do better,
- [00:04:17.036]"and I have to find myself in this process."
- [00:04:20.209]So every day I would beg my dad,
- [00:04:21.653]"Please take me back to school,
- [00:04:22.988]"please give me another chance,
- [00:04:24.286]"I promise I'm gonna do my work", and so on and so forth.
- [00:04:27.607]Lo and behold he still made me wait.
- [00:04:29.889]So I had to wait and I had to prove myself
- [00:04:32.925]to show that I was prepared.
- [00:04:35.054]And so once I proved myself to show that I was prepared,
- [00:04:38.282]once he signed my promissory note for the bill
- [00:04:40.644]that he didn't pay before, he paid my bill,
- [00:04:43.899]and so when I went back to work
- [00:04:46.675]the lady says, "Hey, you need to fix this,
- [00:04:48.281]"you need to get this stuff off this conveyor belt,
- [00:04:51.869]"it's jamming everything up."
- [00:04:54.110]And so when I knew that my dad was paying my tuition
- [00:04:57.798]I said, "You pick it up yourself, I quit."
- [00:05:00.468]And so that was the beginning of my new beginning.
- [00:05:04.626]So (laughing) when I started work, I mean,
- [00:05:08.178]when I went back to school guess who was on the dean's list?
- [00:05:12.089]Me.
- [00:05:12.922]Guess who figured out life at that point
- [00:05:14.753]how education was important?
- [00:05:16.738]Me, and guess who knew that the importance
- [00:05:19.948]of education was going to change your economic status?
- [00:05:23.646]Me, so after all of that I realized that,
- [00:05:26.936]"Hey, this is important, I need to figure out
- [00:05:29.010]"what I need to do, and find that pathway
- [00:05:31.453]"that was passionate for me."
- [00:05:33.326]So I began to do my internships and start getting connected
- [00:05:37.172]with the different advisers in my office
- [00:05:39.202]and I loved what they did.
- [00:05:41.488]And so they took me under their wings,
- [00:05:43.551]became my mentors, and so on and so forth,
- [00:05:45.942]and so it was extremely helpful for me
- [00:05:48.644]and they helped me along the way.
- [00:05:50.917]So, when I realized that it was time for me to graduate,
- [00:05:55.682]well let me back up a little bit.
- [00:05:57.178]So after I got back to school after a year,
- [00:05:59.901]started having a little bit more fun,
- [00:06:01.964]and I got pregnant right?
- [00:06:05.434]Yes, I was doing great.
- [00:06:07.542](laughing)
- [00:06:09.993]I got pregnant right.
- [00:06:11.256]So, after I had my baby, I knew.
- [00:06:14.539]I knew, I knew the expectations that I had for my life,
- [00:06:18.301]and I knew that with me being in charge
- [00:06:20.571]of another human being, that I really had to be
- [00:06:23.005]on my A game because I refused,
- [00:06:25.818]and this is just my own personal thing,
- [00:06:28.376]probably shouldn't say this on camera,
- [00:06:29.704]but I refused to be that mother with a dirty stroller
- [00:06:32.700]and a dirty diaper bag.
- [00:06:34.002]And I refused to have less than for my child.
- [00:06:37.322]So whatever that looked like, I was willing to do.
- [00:06:40.121]So I began to take 18, 20 hours per semester.
- [00:06:43.329]You realize what you're made of
- [00:06:44.795]when you're being put to the test.
- [00:06:47.696]So that's what I did.
- [00:06:48.940]So long story short, I completed my Bachelors
- [00:06:51.576]in the year 2000, then after completing my Master's,
- [00:06:56.713]after completing my Bachelors in the year 2000
- [00:06:59.119]I really got on the speed because I realized what I needed.
- [00:07:02.881]Then I completed my Master's in Business Administration
- [00:07:07.057]in 2003, thought I was going to do my PHD
- [00:07:10.593]in Social Economics, because I thought that
- [00:07:13.881]I wanted to study the topic about taxes
- [00:07:16.739]and how high they are in impoverish neighborhoods.
- [00:07:21.029]But after realizing that I didn't wanna study anymore
- [00:07:23.252]math and so on and so forth, I said, "Skip that."
- [00:07:26.136]However, I was too far in the degree program
- [00:07:28.895]to quit so I went ahead and finished my second degree.
- [00:07:31.542]Now I'm in the process of completing my Doctorate
- [00:07:33.694]in Business Administration with emphasis on Management
- [00:07:36.055]and Leadership, and I will be finished,
- [00:07:39.121]I will be an ABD in December of this year.
- [00:07:41.570](applause)
- [00:07:43.394]Yes, December of this year.
- [00:07:45.685](applause continues)
- [00:07:48.673]So, with the SBA I was able to write
- [00:07:51.826]the proposals for Lincoln University.
- [00:07:54.355]They wanted a small business development center on campus
- [00:07:56.862]because they wanted to help the minorities
- [00:07:58.645]within the community, and wanted to really develop
- [00:08:01.606]the economics within the area.
- [00:08:05.016]So I wrote the proposal, we got approved,
- [00:08:06.839]so on and so forth.
- [00:08:08.826]But I was able to start with just a pen and piece of paper.
- [00:08:11.977]You know how when people have a vision,
- [00:08:13.772]and they say, "Hey, I don't know how this is gonna happen,
- [00:08:15.851]"but I want you to make it happen.
- [00:08:17.310]"So here's this pen and piece of paper and you do it."
- [00:08:20.141]So, long story short, within the first year
- [00:08:22.461]I was able to gather 56 clients with help in existing
- [00:08:25.543]and startup, with startup companies.
- [00:08:28.949]And three of my clients were able to go to Washington DC
- [00:08:31.720]with assistance, with my assistance,
- [00:08:33.915]and then we generated more than $500,000 in loans
- [00:08:37.166]to help them with their startup working capitol.
- [00:08:39.604]So, I'm currently, this is where I think I fit in guys.
- [00:08:44.128]Currently I'm working with MODOT DVEs,
- [00:08:47.549]because what I'm finding out with the DVEs,
- [00:08:50.739]is that a lot of the minorities within the civil engineering
- [00:08:55.049]or any engineering capacity, that there is a big pay gap
- [00:08:59.071]between how the women are paid versus the men.
- [00:09:03.304]So one of my clients in particular,
- [00:09:05.090]she has the same skillset as her peer,
- [00:09:09.835]the company that is a DVE pays her $11 an hour,
- [00:09:14.086]however pays the guy $30 an hour.
- [00:09:17.208]And because she is wanting to get her name out there
- [00:09:20.540]she is trying all that she can,
- [00:09:22.492]and she's been accepting this pay for the last five years.
- [00:09:25.971]And so this has been ongoing but she doesn't know
- [00:09:28.443]how to break out of the barriers and how to overcome it.
- [00:09:31.789]So I just think that, that is just a really disparity,
- [00:09:35.367]but I'm trying to help her because
- [00:09:36.911]a lot of that is confidence.
- [00:09:38.658]And so once her voice is heard I think
- [00:09:41.182]everything else will change as well.
- [00:09:43.762]And like he mentioned last week,
- [00:09:46.517]I was one of 17 women, Business Women of the Year.
- [00:09:50.193]So hopefully...
- [00:09:51.026](applause)
- [00:09:51.859](laughing) Thank you guys.
- [00:09:54.106]Thank you, thank you.
- [00:09:57.685]So hopefully, well at the end of the month
- [00:10:02.894]you should see my journal so I'll share it with you guys.
- [00:10:06.087]And then people ask me all the time, what inspires me,
- [00:10:08.909]what keeps me going, what drives me.
- [00:10:11.258]I'm a family girl, I'm a faith girl.
- [00:10:14.678]So my faith and my family, they drive me.
- [00:10:17.034]It is the basis of who I am, that is the fabric of my DNA,
- [00:10:20.490]and I don't know what else it would look like.
- [00:10:23.938]I have married my college sweetheart.
- [00:10:26.978]We met the first year of orientation.
- [00:10:30.020]This is my daughter, she is the reason for the season.
- [00:10:33.509]She is the reason that gave me ignition
- [00:10:36.616]to move things forward and, you know,
- [00:10:38.839]even when I get nervous about what I'm doing
- [00:10:41.723]she always tells me, she says,
- [00:10:43.312]"Mom, don't act like the new student
- [00:10:47.588]"to the class that you already teach."
- [00:10:50.067]And so I just think that was phenomenal
- [00:10:52.671]because the mouth of the babe, you know,
- [00:10:55.286]it does tell you what you're doing.
- [00:10:58.381]And these are all my three babies.
- [00:11:00.135]My daughter's 20, my son's 15, and my baby boy he's 10.
- [00:11:04.280]So that's who I am.
- [00:11:06.106]And so as you know who I am, you'll begin to understand
- [00:11:09.119]how I do what I do, and what inspires me
- [00:11:11.640]and motivates me to continue on.
- [00:11:14.035]So as we begin to look at the future logistics,
- [00:11:17.766]what you need to understand is that what we once knew
- [00:11:22.220]about daily functions of the world is no longer.
- [00:11:25.803]Things are rapidly changing before our eyes.
- [00:11:29.576]According to Robinson 2016, he stated that,
- [00:11:32.020]"The distribution system is changing.
- [00:11:34.994]"It is different from yesterday; therefore,
- [00:11:38.057]"if businesses cannot adapt, they will be left behind."
- [00:11:42.715]They will be left behind and I just thought
- [00:11:44.353]that was absolutely amazing as we begin
- [00:11:47.066]to look at the news and see how things
- [00:11:48.728]are transpiring right before our eyes.
- [00:11:51.411]You know we look up, how many of you all have iPhones?
- [00:11:56.015]Yes.
- [00:11:56.848]How many of you all update every time iPhone updates?
- [00:12:00.171]You guys have a lot of money.
- [00:12:02.053](laughing)
- [00:12:05.005]So when you think about just iPhone alone,
- [00:12:07.427]there are so many things that are going on with iPhone,
- [00:12:10.112]like, how can you keep up?
- [00:12:11.863]How can you really keep up with the trending things
- [00:12:14.141]that are going on, and then if you don't have the money,
- [00:12:16.747]or the resources, or even the knowhow
- [00:12:18.618]to find this information; again,
- [00:12:20.738]you're going to be left behind right?
- [00:12:23.676]So when I look at the news you see Amazon everywhere.
- [00:12:28.621]Amazon has set the trend for logistics.
- [00:12:32.146]Amazon is taking over the world.
- [00:12:35.162]If you don't know about Amazon
- [00:12:37.028]or if you're not familiar with what all they do,
- [00:12:39.392]I highly recommend that you do get to know,
- [00:12:42.214]or start taking some time to research.
- [00:12:45.066]But newsflash, Grossman the Vice President of CHAINAnalytics
- [00:12:49.207]says that, "Companies used to capture
- [00:12:51.245]"customers on their own terms."
- [00:12:53.878]This may be corny to y'all but
- [00:12:55.302]I thought this was really cool.
- [00:12:57.193]"Companies used to capture customers on their own terms.
- [00:13:00.276]"Now they have to address them on their own terms.
- [00:13:04.369]"It is no longer a transaction,
- [00:13:05.882]"but an experience and a convenience."
- [00:13:08.894]So we are now looking for the experience.
- [00:13:11.938]People ask me all the time, "Well what are you doing?
- [00:13:13.725]What do you wanna do?"
- [00:13:14.581]I'm looking for the experience.
- [00:13:15.841]Well it costs too much, I'm looking for the experience.
- [00:13:18.198]It's all about me, what I feel, how I wanna do it,
- [00:13:21.260]so on and so forth, and then convenience.
- [00:13:24.049]So we wanna be convenience, no one wants to leave
- [00:13:26.508]outside of their jobs, no one wants to do anything.
- [00:13:30.046]However, we have now been synced up,
- [00:13:33.300]where now, with the way technology is setup,
- [00:13:36.231]we don't have to do anything
- [00:13:37.695]that we do not want to do, right?
- [00:13:41.997]So, Amazon accounted for 60%
- [00:13:44.574]of US online sales growth in 2016.
- [00:13:48.074]According to Forrester Research,
- [00:13:49.905]the Amazon effect is driving change through the retail
- [00:13:53.075]supply chain and the logistics industries.
- [00:13:56.523]So when you think about all of these things,
- [00:13:58.319]you're looking at the drone right?
- [00:13:59.909]You all have seen the drone.
- [00:14:01.940]And I don't know how, I know a lot of you all
- [00:14:03.730]are much younger than I am,
- [00:14:05.840]but I remember when the drone first came out,
- [00:14:07.795]when they first introduced it.
- [00:14:09.587]And they were talking about it was going to be warfare
- [00:14:11.785]and all this other stuff, and so on and so forth,
- [00:14:14.107]not knowing that they had another system in place
- [00:14:17.442]that was going to, I don't wanna say disrupt the economy,
- [00:14:21.882]but it did disrupt some things.
- [00:14:24.184]Because now the things, the mail services,
- [00:14:26.548]they have done a lot of layoffs.
- [00:14:28.581]The mail services have done a lot of layoffs,
- [00:14:33.171]the delivery companies have done a lot of layoffs,
- [00:14:36.268]because of how they were needed before,
- [00:14:38.758]they're no longer needed anymore.
- [00:14:43.280]How about, let me give you an example.
- [00:14:46.854]Hold on guys, just hold on, wait for me.
- [00:14:49.458]Alright.
- [00:14:52.816]So this is just an example of how it works,
- [00:14:56.241]I guess I don't have any sound.
- [00:15:00.256]Can you guys hear anything?
- [00:15:01.492]No.
- [00:15:02.325]No? But you can see.
- [00:15:03.503](students talking)
- [00:15:04.427]Yeah, you get it.
- [00:15:07.358]I wanted you to hear the words.
- [00:15:09.656](students talking)
- [00:15:12.072]Can you hear the sound now?
- [00:15:15.916]Okay.
- [00:15:25.323]Oh there it is, okay.
- [00:15:29.401]So that's a delivery package.
- [00:15:37.989](students murmuring)
- [00:15:56.436](Andria laughing)
- [00:15:59.232](students murmuring)
- [00:16:02.178]Great, okay so this is Amazon PrimeAir.
- [00:16:05.843]Now the great thing about Amazon PrimeAir is that it has,
- [00:16:10.659]hold on one second here,
- [00:16:12.935]it has reduced, yeah.
- [00:16:18.756]Yeah, the great thing about PrimeAir is that it has reduced
- [00:16:21.644]the amount of time that people need anything.
- [00:16:24.290]So Amazon PrimeAir, it now allows you to order something
- [00:16:29.657]within two hours from anywhere
- [00:16:32.025]and they will have that delivered,
- [00:16:33.721]I mean they'll allow you to order anything within
- [00:16:36.301]that certain time frame, and typically within two hours,
- [00:16:39.632]you will have your package delivered to your door.
- [00:16:42.064]So if you order some groceries that morning,
- [00:16:44.410]by the evening time, I mean by midday,
- [00:16:47.213]you will have all of your ingredients
- [00:16:49.124]and everything that you need to do
- [00:16:51.892]whatever that you're trying to do.
- [00:16:53.978]Again, you don't have to leave the house.
- [00:16:55.843]And then you have the Omnichannel.
- [00:16:57.707]How many of you all have heard of the Omnichannel?
- [00:17:00.391]Only one person has heard of the Omnichannel.
- [00:17:03.281]Well the Omnichannel is a place that you can go
- [00:17:06.044]where all of the stores are beginning to link in
- [00:17:09.304]to put their products in, so there's no longer
- [00:17:12.439]going to be a lot of brick and mortar stores.
- [00:17:14.384]Meaning stores that you can walk into.
- [00:17:16.622]But yet, they have online stores
- [00:17:18.734]that will give you everything that you need,
- [00:17:21.578]and you do not have to leave the comfort of your home.
- [00:17:25.071]So again, the Omnistore is the ability of consumers
- [00:17:27.673]to buy anything from anywhere, in stores and online,
- [00:17:31.550]from phone, tablets, computers, and pick it up
- [00:17:33.706]and have it delivered by multiple options,
- [00:17:37.496]has companies investing more in technology
- [00:17:39.770]and moving toward warehouse managing systems
- [00:17:42.219]to streamline their back-end processes.
- [00:17:44.696]Again, all of these jobs, all of these things
- [00:17:47.058]that are being implemented are reducing manpower.
- [00:17:51.190]So what used to take 10 to 20 people to do,
- [00:17:54.655]now you have one person operating a remote
- [00:17:57.095]and sending it out, right?
- [00:18:01.187]Okay and then we have our transportation.
- [00:18:04.222]We talked about this, Dr. Larry talked about this
- [00:18:06.900]a little bit in his presentation,
- [00:18:09.867]however this has now been implemented.
- [00:18:13.282]This is now being implemented in Cleveland.
- [00:18:16.808]Uh oh.
- [00:18:17.659](upbeat jazz music)
- [00:18:21.871]Oh well I can't make it bigger but you guys get it.
- [00:18:25.266]Can you imagine being on a highway with this 18 wheeler,
- [00:18:29.334]that's driving by itself next to you?
- [00:18:32.544]Yes?
- [00:18:33.482]I mean it probably has already happened,
- [00:18:35.966]but just think about how things were at the beginning,
- [00:18:39.129]and how they are rapidly progressing to something else.
- [00:18:43.879]Again, this is reducing the manpower
- [00:18:46.358]that we need to manage, and operate,
- [00:18:49.413]and do distribution within the country.
- [00:18:53.418](laughing)
- [00:18:55.513]Over, taking over. (laughs loudly)
- [00:19:02.891](students murmuring)
- [00:19:05.935]Yeah.
- [00:19:11.377]And then they said that with this,
- [00:19:14.137]with the automatic driving for the 18 wheeler,
- [00:19:18.283]that it does pick up if people are, if humans are walking,
- [00:19:22.327]but what about the animals that running,
- [00:19:23.953]I mean, not to say that I wanna run 'em over either,
- [00:19:26.476]but just think about all the other things
- [00:19:28.228]that could take place at this, at any opportunity,
- [00:19:32.058]what if there is an accident?
- [00:19:33.539]Does it continue to go through?
- [00:19:35.330]You know, I don't know if they have found out
- [00:19:36.927]all of that information or not, however
- [00:19:41.456]I think that's something that they definitely
- [00:19:43.007]need to fine tune in order to make it work.
- [00:19:52.342]And then you have the RFID, and who knows what that is?
- [00:19:57.420]Who's heard of that?
- [00:19:58.376](students murmuring)
- [00:19:59.209]Yes?
- [00:20:00.042]Can you tell me what that is?
- [00:20:01.469](students murmuring)
- [00:20:03.252](students laughing)
- [00:20:04.708](chuckling) However you choose to.
- [00:20:07.342]It's digital inventory.
- [00:20:08.695]Hm?
- [00:20:09.546]It's where it's like,
- [00:20:10.645]inventory throughout the supply chain, digital.
- [00:20:13.934]Right.
- [00:20:14.833]So it's able to track the inventory for supplying and
- [00:20:19.834]for the supplies that are coming in
- [00:20:21.145]to the different warehouses.
- [00:20:23.091]And so what I find that to be amazing is because
- [00:20:26.619]within just the state of Missouri,
- [00:20:28.687]there have been so many layoffs
- [00:20:30.754]because they have replaced people with machines.
- [00:20:34.449]So even with the people that will stand up and fill
- [00:20:37.170]the bottles up, and twist the caps, and so on and so forth;
- [00:20:40.464]they now have technology to do everything.
- [00:20:43.254]You do not have to do anything.
- [00:20:45.136]And even with the books, the warehouse for the books,
- [00:20:48.551]they also have different systems that
- [00:20:51.030]instead of the conveyor belts you put everything on it,
- [00:20:54.412]now they have it to where it goes
- [00:20:57.008]by size and so on and so forth.
- [00:20:58.981]So here is my last video and then
- [00:21:01.217]we're wrapping up here very quickly.
- [00:21:03.739]But it just shows you how things are progressing
- [00:21:07.355]and moving fairly quickly and eliminating a lot of jobs.
- [00:21:12.884]The time factor plays a key role in the process
- [00:21:15.798]for getting a product from its manufacturer
- [00:21:18.229]to its point of sale, because time is money.
- [00:21:22.257](upbeat music)
- [00:21:29.607]RFID, radio-frequency identification,
- [00:21:33.017]is a new technology that significantly increases
- [00:21:36.183]the efficiency of this process chain.
- [00:21:39.991]With RFID, data are transferred without physical contact.
- [00:21:44.975]In addition, RFID helps positively identify shipping units.
- [00:21:50.994]In an instant, valuable information is recorded
- [00:21:54.045]and utilized on an international scale.
- [00:21:57.174]This example demonstrates how it functions in practice.
- [00:22:01.041]The process chain begins with production and continues
- [00:22:04.371]by way of a central warehouse on to the retailer.
- [00:22:12.529]In the manufacturer's warehouse,
- [00:22:14.169]goods are prepared for distribution to retailers.
- [00:22:17.535]Without RFID, order picking of mixed pallets
- [00:22:20.583]for delivery to department stores or supermarkets
- [00:22:23.995]can be extremely time consuming, why?
- [00:22:27.852]Because it requires a whole series of individual steps,
- [00:22:31.340]most of them manual.
- [00:22:38.837]In future, processes that now have to be carried out by hand
- [00:22:43.276]will function automatically based on RFID.
- [00:22:47.054]The key is the RFID transponder, which can be affixed
- [00:22:50.515]boxes and pallets as early as the production stage.
- [00:22:55.181]Communication between transponders
- [00:22:57.222]and RFID readers is fully automatic.
- [00:23:00.567]They practically do the work by themselves.
- [00:23:03.856]Readers installed at various points in the sorting
- [00:23:06.392]and order picking process register
- [00:23:08.613]the electronic product codes stored on the transponders
- [00:23:11.990]the moments they come into range.
- [00:23:15.282]These data are immediately transferred
- [00:23:17.524]to the central logistics and merchandise management system.
- [00:23:21.233]Within seconds, the goods delivered
- [00:23:23.307]are compared in detail with the goods ordered.
- [00:23:27.682]Even transport and sorting in the warehouse
- [00:23:30.168]can be automated in future.
- [00:23:33.075]RFID tags indicate where each product belongs.
- [00:23:37.606]This enables the hangar goods sorter, for example,
- [00:23:40.411]to transport the merchandise to its intended destination.
- [00:23:45.004]The faster the goods leave the warehouse,
- [00:23:47.123]the more efficient the process.
- [00:23:53.864]Processing incoming goods by today's methods
- [00:23:56.951]is also quite labor-intensive,
- [00:23:59.584]and so is warehouse management, sorting,
- [00:24:02.053]and positioning the goods, because a large proportion
- [00:24:05.103]of the process must be carried out manually.
- [00:24:12.538]Here too in the incoming goods area,
- [00:24:14.731]RFID is said to considerably accelerate process in future.
- [00:24:19.398]The fully automated reader
- [00:24:20.634]registers the relevant information as goods enter the gate.
- [00:24:24.133]The data are transferred directly
- [00:24:25.723]to the merchandise management system.
- [00:24:28.238]A single reader is capable of registering
- [00:24:30.480]up to 40 RFID transponders in one second.
- [00:24:34.508]This can mean time savings-- 40 in one second.
- [00:24:36.431]of 10 minutes for each truck, a major plus
- [00:24:38.749]in cost effectiveness because the merchandise
- [00:24:41.391]reaches its destination much faster,
- [00:24:43.830]and both manpower and means of transport
- [00:24:46.515]are utilized more efficiently.
- [00:24:50.203]In the warehouse, forklifts and high shelves
- [00:24:53.090]will all be equipped with RFID technology,
- [00:24:55.926]which will automatically indicate to the operator
- [00:24:58.486]the storage position of each product.
- [00:25:03.075]When the employee sorts the goods into the correct place
- [00:25:06.165]confirmation is given via touchscreen monitor.
- [00:25:09.290]If he or she selects the wrong place for the product
- [00:25:11.981]an error is indicated.
- [00:25:13.938]This way RFID helps ensure that the goods
- [00:25:16.953]are always in the right places and--
- [00:25:19.067]Okay, so.
- [00:25:21.065]Alright so I think you guys get the point
- [00:25:23.400]of where they are going with that.
- [00:25:25.833]But with all of this, I need to ask the question,
- [00:25:29.158]what is the common denominator
- [00:25:32.200]in all of the new logistics that are taking place?
- [00:25:35.335]Who can tell me?
- [00:25:36.347](students murmuring)
- [00:25:37.488]Hm?
- [00:25:38.321]No people.
- [00:25:39.154]No people, absolutely, and what else?
- [00:25:42.215]Reducing time.
- [00:25:43.135]Reducing time, efficiency, what else?
- [00:25:45.574]Convenience.
- [00:25:46.407]Convenience, what else?
- [00:25:48.514]What else?
- [00:25:50.017]Yes.
- [00:25:52.082]It's a faster pace.
- [00:25:53.970]Okay, a faster pace, you, what did you say?
- [00:25:56.438]Who said that? Who said?
- [00:25:58.104](students murmuring)
- [00:25:59.243]Technology, absolutely.
- [00:26:01.350]So with all of the technology, they do not want any errors.
- [00:26:05.700]They are trying to reduce costs,
- [00:26:07.359]they're trying to reduce all of those things.
- [00:26:09.471]So based on the different types of areas of interest
- [00:26:14.263]that you're looking to go into,
- [00:26:16.219]I need you to find out where do you fit in in this?
- [00:26:18.934]How is it, why is it important?
- [00:26:21.517]Why does grad school fit into what's going on
- [00:26:25.125]with the new technology and the new logistics?
- [00:26:27.575]How does that matter to you and how would it impact you?
- [00:26:30.333]Who can answer that question for me?
- [00:26:31.912]Yes.
- [00:26:32.745](student speaking faintly)
- [00:26:36.513]You guys make me so proud, but go ahead.
- [00:26:39.406](laughing)
- [00:26:40.297]I think it's practical to go to grad school
- [00:26:42.936]because it makes us more valuable
- [00:26:44.662]and more competitive, versus machines.
- [00:26:48.236]We're in the age now where technology
- [00:26:50.516]is currently advancing, like you said,
- [00:26:53.346]a lot of people losing jobs, (speaking faintly)
- [00:26:56.857]so men have to be smarter than machines
- [00:26:59.271]in order for us to still be productive.
- [00:27:01.826]Absolutely.
- [00:27:02.885]So outside of doing the coursework, so on and so forth,
- [00:27:05.648]what else is necessary?
- [00:27:08.068]What else is necessary?
- [00:27:08.987]Yes.
- [00:27:10.337]My name is Ruth Priviline from the
- [00:27:11.635]University of Railway-- Yes.
- [00:27:13.222]And Electrical Engineering.
- [00:27:15.358](laughing)
- [00:27:17.165]I was gonna say that going into graduate studies,
- [00:27:19.443]as far as research, you get to be
- [00:27:20.952]a part of the production-- Yes.
- [00:27:22.584]You get to do the research,
- [00:27:23.417]to see where the world is going next.
- [00:27:25.552]You get to be part of the change
- [00:27:27.218]and if you stay in the phase now
- [00:27:30.223]and you just wanna go to work, which it's not a bad thing,
- [00:27:32.825]you're just not gonna be a part of the change.
- [00:27:34.940]Absolutely, absolutely, which means what?
- [00:27:37.568]You get left behind.
- [00:27:38.542]You get left behind, absolutely.
- [00:27:40.251]So if you're not a part of the solution,
- [00:27:42.281]if you're not studying the trends,
- [00:27:44.511]if you don't see what's going on,
- [00:27:46.218]nine times out of 10 you are going to be left behind.
- [00:27:49.631]So all of the degree, all of the knowledge,
- [00:27:51.513]and all of that is good; however,
- [00:27:53.710]what I have come to understand is that
- [00:27:55.813]if you don't have life application,
- [00:27:57.844]if you don't have social capitol,
- [00:27:59.471]if you don't have all of those components included
- [00:28:02.603]in what your goals and aspirations are,
- [00:28:04.679]again, you are going to be left behind.
- [00:28:07.368]So it is so important to make sure that
- [00:28:09.890]whatever you're doing, you need to be studying the trend.
- [00:28:13.142]You need to get certified in your areas.
- [00:28:15.129]You need to have those professional development classes.
- [00:28:18.136]You need to get under a mentor.
- [00:28:20.039]You need to do all of those things, because again,
- [00:28:23.201]it's not just going through the ropes of getting knowledge,
- [00:28:26.122]but you wanna be able to apply your knowledge, right?
- [00:28:28.941]Yes?
